I was wondering what a soundtrack that actually used the OPL3 features decently might have sounded like. Here's a quick demonstration :] Video rendered with corrscope

Compare with kzbin.info/www/bejne/naTXgWlqr7CFoacm14s The MIDI replayer leaves a lot to be desired even on AdLib, but OPL3 gets treated as "OPL2 with 2x the channels", which is just a shame.

Why compare with SB16? Sound Blaster sucks. Doom was made to be heard on Roland. I like your remix, but it's not Doom. It could maybe be heard in a fighting game spinoff of Doom. There are several sounds here that were deliberately NOT used because they would have ruined the game's soundtrack, especially that cymbal/snap noise. It's pure ear rape! You just didn't notice back then because you were in a crowded arcade and the speakers were muffled.

@@neattricks7678 I think you missed the point of the video. This entire experiment is about the quality of the OPL3 playback engine in the original. Which is also the reason I'm comparing against the SB16. Also yeah, this is not Doom, this is Doom II ;]

@@neattricks7678I have a modern remix of this with a bitchin' guitar solo by Shai Baruch on my channel, perhaps that would be more to your liking?

two minutes ago i was like "i wonder if anyone has redone the doom soundtrack to actually be written to opl3 instead of general midi haphazardly mapped to opl3" and now im on this web site

I like the bass line and even could think of it be more "pop like", would be awesome. It is strange how good this sound, despite being primitive, bare-bone OPL3. But my heart beats in FM anyways, so I love it! (EDIT: Barebone with a bit of VST effects)

Hey, glad to see you're still around, my friend! :] I thought you disappeared from KZbin altogether! Yeah, that was basically the point: with minimum effort, you can still achieve so much with the OPL3. Also no VST effects here, just somewhat clever usage of stereo. I didn't use 9 channels on the organ for nothing ;] - the low octave is panned left, the high octave is panned right and both have a slight (but different) vibrato applied to it. The high octave also has a different instrument

just a nitpick, the bassline is not supposed to move with the chords. It only moves up a 4th when the key changes, and then back down when it changes back.
