One thing I'd love to see is an RPG that involves swapping between groups working together, each character having their own powers. Like, one group being Mario, Luigi, Wario, Waluigi, and Yoshi. Then, another being Peach, Daisy, Rosalina, and Pauline.

Considering that Super Mario Bros. 3 is meant to be a Stage Play, it could play like Princess Peach: Showtime! since it’s like the same way, but more focused on the “Stage Play” part. The World Maps could function similarly to the Lobby in the Sparkle Theater, and the stages could even have special costumes for Mario & Luigi like Peach did that have functions related to the Power-Ups from the original game.

You keep talking about how they could take the map screens and make them open world, but they kind of already did that in Bowser's Fury. Bowser's Fury's map is laid out in a way that it feels like a giant map screen where you walk from level to level, just instead of pressing A to warp to the start of the level, you just walk directly into the level. So I think this formula already exists and that's probably what the new 3D Mario game is going to be like.

Super Mario Bros 2 taking place in a dream is a misconception. Read the story given by the instruction booklet (it's available online for free), it's a pretty interesting story. Better than just "It's a dream".

@@RedTHedge The instruction manual says that while the people of Subcon contacted him via a dream, the next day (so when he's awake) he alongside Luigi, Toad and Peach, stumbles upon the place he saw in his dream and they reach it, in reality this time, and that's when the game begins. Sure this technically seems to create an inconsistency with the game's ending but excuse me for prefering to consider the better and most interesting story for the game. And hey according to that same manual, Mario actually reached Subcon in his dream (when the inhabitants call for his help in his dream) before getting woken up by lightning within the dream (maybe Wart was realizing what was going on and tried to put a stop to it). So maybe after it's over, Mario and the others go back there through their dreams to celebrate their victory or something. After all, even if it's real, Subcon and its inhabitabts are still tied to dreams, the whole plot started when Wart got his hands on their Dream Machine after all.
