It's interesting because back in TriStar approached Toho on making an American remake trilogy, Toho told them they would keep the rights until 2005 and Toho would continue where the last movie ended. Of course that never happened after TriStar was stalling on a script and the actual movie in 1998 being ridiculed. But it makes you wonder that by 1999, they could've still had the opportunity to continue the Heisei run instead of just rebooting everything.
