The final 20 minutes are outrageous and the buildup during the film as it explains all the hard parts of the climb and the panic it creates for everyone around him who all realize it's quite possible he's about to die is fascinating. @kencornia33332 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your response, as is much appreciated. I did not film Alex climbing, but here are my thoughts based upon the Free Solo filmmaker’s comments. In certain instances, the filmmakers felt that they needed to give Alex more space to climb, so that they would not become a distraction and cause their friend Alex to fall. Alex in turn did not want to die in front of his friends. Just imagine climbing a very difficult section of rock next to people with cameras filming close to you, that alone is a distraction, but what if one of them moves suddenly or makes a distracting noise. This was identified by the filmmakers as potentially problematic during the pitch 23 boulder problem crux, which is the hardest part of the climb. The film crew decided to film this section remotely, which proved to be the perfect balance, as it protected the integrity of Alex's experience by giving him the space that he needed to climb without the distractions of a camera crew. In other words, the film crew captured the incredible film footage they needed to produce an award-winning film, while giving Alex both the physical space and the head space he needed to focus on his climbing.
@anonymousposter64612 жыл бұрын
what it also means is that they wanted him to not feel suffocated during what could have been his last climb. he's used to just man and wall; that's what he's willing to die for. they want to be sure he wouldn't think "i wish they weren't here" as he fell, if he did. that was for their own sake as much as his.

I remember seeing “El Capitan” in person and thinking “that doesn’t look crazy high”. (Obviously it’s huge, but to the naked eye not so much). We were like 250 yards from it. Then our guide told us to try and spot anyone climbing it. I looked using my naked eye and saw absolutely no one after carefully scanning for a few minutes. You’d think you can see someone cuz it doesn’t look crazy big… but then our guide told us that there were actually 4 people climbing it. We got on some binoculars and spotted them. They looked like little tiny ants. That’s when I realized how BIG “El Capitan” really is. I was mesmerized.

I've done free soloing, mostly in northern Thailand (limestone karst, up to 90 meters). The degree of courage by Alex is phenomenal. Few mortals could do a tenth of what he does. There are times when a free soloist gets so scared, the legs start shaking and he/she wishes to switch channels (as if it was a TV show), but you have to keep going - particularly if descending is as (or more) dangerous than continuing upward. While super important in this instance you will find that rock climbing is like that all around. It's rare to find a negative person in climbing. You will show up to a new boulder and find people you've never met and they will root for you before knowing your name. Even at the highest levels of competition the first time the climbers see the route they talk to each other, they support each other, and are there for each other. If you've never tried it before I can't recommend it enough. Find a local gym and spend a little time. It's not only great for your physical health but mental.

@@gillsilva5643 To compare Free Solo to The Alpinist is like comparing a NYC taxi driver to a NASCAR driver or a Pilot to an Astronaut. Both respect the others as professional drivers/pilots or in this case climbers. But they are two ends of the spectrum. Generally one is seen as superior yet it takes different levels of body/mental health and strength to do each one. They are both legends and pioneers in their own rights.

Wonder what your tone is behind that comment. There is an aspect of - Fred Astaire speaking of getting all of the praise and Marvel at his dancing with partner Ginger Rogers - she does it all in heels and backwards. The Dynamics both physical and Head trip are different. Being someone with a camera and striving to have no part in in what is being filmed in that situation is truly difficult. Do not mistake acknowledging the difficulty and challenges for one-upmanship.

@Creacher Creature i guess the difference might be LOVE. alex has to focus on his own life, he knows his friends are safe. he has to have a mindset out of steal, completely focused on achieiving the climb. his friends are with alex with their care, heart and love. one is focus the other is love.

I think not having ropes for him makes it harder. Or other people as counter weights. And I think he has to climb the harder areas and they took the easier router around those parts. Though not sure really. They also carry way more equipment.
@Fleetato5 жыл бұрын
Creacher Creature Alex CANT be nervous and that’s the difference. If he gets nervous he slips up and then he dies. Alex knows this and so he’s trained himself to be so calm and collected because it’s a matter of life and death. On the other hand, the camera crew can afford a little nervousness because they are roped up
