Thank you so much Lauren for sharing your journey. I’ve been following you for years and am now on keto and it has worked wonders for me! I’m 34, with schizoaffective disorder, got early retired 3 years ago and never worked or finnished high school. Now I’m free of anxiety for the first time since childhood, negative symptoms in remission and I’m going back to finish high school one class at a time, and hope to go to university one day. You introduced keto to me, and if it weren’t for your first hand experience I don’t think I’ve tried it. I’m healing. For the first time. So thank you. ❤ there are haters in the comments I see but just remember that psychiatry is subjective and all it comes down to, the most important research is LIVED EXPERIENCE. Keep up the good work! I’ve been your silent cheerleader for a long time so thought is was about time to leave a positive comment 🌺 greetings from denmark 🇩🇰

While I understand and I’m happy for your recovery I would be cautious about recommending it as a new model. We simply don’t know enough at this point. While your experience is highly positive you can find anecdotes on the internet of people’s depression getting worse on keto. In fact research on diet and depression found only 1 diet to help with depression - the Mediterranean diet, not Keto. Some people achieve complete recovery from depression with Cognitive Behavoural Therapy. We’re all different and this pyramid will look different for all of us.

you might as well just try it. See what everyone is talking about. It's not just keto, it's fasting, exercise etc. These things litteraly are putting mental illness into remission where psychiatry and psychology cannot. Keto can give the individual profound insights into what is going on, the who, why where and how. Just do it instead of talking about how there isn't enough data. Were all getting really tired and I'm sure Lauren is of hearing this stuff
@daffodil170713 сағат бұрын
@ I have tried many lifestyle modifications and they do absolutely matter. My personal experience with Keto is a highly negative one though. It caused a rash all over my body, which turned out to be a bile issue. Most experts agree mental health issues are caused by a combination of biological, psychological, and social factors. Hardly anyone believes it’s just a chemical imbalance. But reducing it to metabolic dysfunction is not much better than calling it a serotonin deficiency and can lead many people astray.
@Pilkingmangleton13 сағат бұрын
@@daffodil1707 yeah but no one seems to get that its a mitochondrial issue. That a poor diet can be a catalyst along with other cofactors like substances, stress, poor environments, abuses, adversity and disregulated sleep etc. There are no clear cut linear answers and to continue to throw pills at these situations is not going to do anything and that's proven by the fact that its never done anything and there are really NO treatments in psychiatry. Maybe professionals in the field need to understand how diet is playing a much more important role than anyone could have imagined.

Tried medical keto and i could only get into therapeutic ketosis for a couple of times throughout the entire 2,5 months i was on it. Was extremely difficult as i tried everything to raise my ketones to no avail (exercise, circadian rhythm, lowering carbs to -15, lowering protein to -55, increasing fat to 300-350+, moving most of the day, fasting, and electrolytes). I wanted it to work so bad because when i felt the therapeutic effects of ketosis, i was a night and day different than my usual extremely sick self. I will give it another chance next time but only under a professional’s supervision. Hopefully they could help maintain therapeutic ketosis all day everyday and not just for some part of the day every 4-5 days…
@LivingWellAfterSchizophrenia20 сағат бұрын
Sorry to hear it was difficult to maintain therapeutic ketosis. It was really really helpful for me to be working closely with a metabolic practitioner who could help me troubleshoot and optimize the intervention. Glad to hear you’re going to give that a shot! Something else to consider is that some medications can make it much harder to get into ketosis. Obviously this does not mean just go off them, but it’s an additional aspect that a metabolic practitioner could help navigate.
@PalinaZ5 сағат бұрын
Low ketones doesn't mean you're not in ketosis. You can be in deep ketosis and measure low ketones simply because your body utilizes them. Why would you stop something that makes a night and day difference in your quality of life just because of numbers? Everyone is different anyway. There are thousands of people who put debilitating illnesses into remission buy going full carnivore. They don't even try to be in ketosis, for many it's enough to just cut out all plants and sugars.
@ronpieket8164Сағат бұрын
Some medications can keep you out of ketosis. My doctor put me on a statin, and my blood sugar went from mid 90s postprandial to mid 130s. Fasting glucose went from mid 70s to well over 100, and my ketones hovered around 0.5, normally 3.0+. So I quit the statin, and my numbers came back, after about 10 days. Other medications ca do this also. Some supplements, too, such as niacin.

To suggest that we can just "eat and lifestyle" our way out of serious psychiatric conditions is horrendous. This notion is not just scientifically baseless-it's practically a parody of how mental health treatment should be approached. It’s almost comical, in a grim sort of way, to propose flipping the entire psychiatric care model on its head, placing "therapeutic nutrition" at the base of treatment for conditions like schizophrenia or bipolar disorder. What's next? Treating broken bones with positive vibes and sunlight? The idea that eliminating sugars or following a ketogenic diet could replace medications in the treatment of serious psychiatric disorders is not only laughably simplistic but dangerously misleading. It reduces complex medical conditions to mere problems of poor lifestyle choices. While diet and exercise are important for overall health, they are not magic bullets that can replace pharmacological interventions and professional psychotherapy, which have been developed and refined through decades of rigorous scientific research and clinical practice. And circadian rhythms? Sure, maintaining a regular sleep schedule can help manage mood and improve mental clarity, but to suggest it can take the place of medication in serious cases is to misunderstand the very nature of these illnesses. It's like saying watching sunsets will cure diabetes. To anyone tempted to take this video seriously, I would say: mental health is not a DIY project where you can Pinterest your way to stability with trendy diets and lifestyle hacks. Let's leave the medical advice to actual medical professionals and not internet gurus peddling dangerously oversimplified solutions to complex health issues.

There is a huge correlation between metabolic syndrome and mental illness. There is also a huge correlation between metabolic syndrome and auto-immune diseases, so in that sense, there is a connection. However if you are implying that autoimmune diseases are causal for mental illness, the dots can't be connected quite that easily.

It could be metabolism but there are a half dozen other, even simpler explanations. For example some cycloid psychosis may respond to changes in potassium, also there are reports of cycloid psychosis being halted with low sodium diets. The ion channels would be an obvious canditate for cases with cycloid or fluctuating symptoms and keto has pronounced diuretic effect. The advantage of an electrolyte or ion transport explanation is that it would account for the widespread reports of sudden and dramatic worsening of symptoms that some people experience. Both the sudden worsening and sudden improvement are not well accounted for in the metabolic explanation.
@walera28504 сағат бұрын
The real enabler for improvement is the ketogenic diet constructed of whole foods. If you have severe damage of your mitochondria you can forget about quality sleep & movement without chronic fatigue & pain. What is important beside diet is to find the root cause of your mitochondrial damage. In my case it is lyme disease & reactivated EBV. The core of the treatment is werkly IHHT sessions & high dose infusions with Vit C, B-Vit & special nutritients for the mitochondria. So the shown alternative pyramid here is to simplified to be called as holistic or finalized, but it goes into the right direction & needs to be further developed.

Great basics. I would add it's about good nutrition, with the main culprit being the food bioweapon, iron fortified gluten containing wheat, that's in almost all processed foods, and iron fortification in general, eg corn flakes. Ketosis would be in addition to not consuming those foods.

@wilde111 сағат бұрын
It wouldn't work for me, as simply having a metabolism that works too well is what causes my schizophrenia potentially. Unmedicated I am lean and mean(too mean) and I become delusional and go into psychosis quite quickly, while being on antipsychotics is an effective treatment. I wouldn't try to discredit or change proven methods of treatment, just because one form of metabolic therapy worked for you. Me being 20lbs overweight is a small price to pay to have a brain that works correctly...

It always bothers me when she says that this is not the "fad diet" but intentional ketogenic nutritional therapy. What is different? People that are dieting to lose weight also have health problems. Dr. Palmer put his patient on the keto diet to lose weight then discovered that it helped his mental illness. One of the people who works for metabolic mind also mentions that she did this healing diet herself. I'm interested in the specifics of what Lauren thinks changes the fad diet to an intentional diet. Is it just stricter? Paying more attention to the ratios. I know that there are specific forms of the diet done for epilepsy that are less strict and no tracking of the ratios. That's done with a care team so I'm just wondering what changes it from fad to therapeutic.

I got reactive hypoglycemia that is ruining my life. I also have histamine intolerance so keto would be extremelly hard to sustain.
@dlclcn502112 сағат бұрын
I also can't do medical keto because of MCAS and histamine intolerance. I suspect a mood disorder with me but I am using amino acids and other supplements to target the root cause and keep my neurotransmitters level. It's a game changer for me! Keep those histamine levels down and use supplements that tamper down glutamate and raise GABA and modulate serratonin and dopamine. L-theanine is a life changer for me. You might try ashwaghanda for the blood sugar issues.

God is in us, and we are in God all the time. I am you, and you are me, and we always have been. We are the stardust and water, the mountains and the beaches, and what we see in front of our eyes is no more real than the dreams we have at night. I'm no longer afraid to die now; death is the beginning of the real adventure. Just sit there to contemplate it all after you come back because you're gonna see such crazy and radical things in these trips. That when you come back you're gonna be like what the fuck was that? And you're gonna spend a week just in the shower, what the fuck was that? Cooking your food, what the fuck was that? Driving to work, what the fuck was that? Sitting at work doing your work, what the fuck was that? Thinking that. Trying to wrap your mind around it. Try to remember and trying to figure it out and that's a very valuable process. You can literally hallucinate objects and beings into existence because what's happening is you're tapping into that pure abstract creative potential of mind. That's exactly what you want. Of course it can be kind of freaky but sleep is that times a thousand.

name one paper about "broken (metabolic) pathways" in connection to schizophrenia or mental illness in general! she now acts as though she had a phd in biochemistry... her talk is nothing but unproven theories... if Lauryn was able to mechanistically prove the theory behind the biologic basis of schizophrenia she'd have won the nobel prize in medicine or physiology by now... but no, she even claims to have found a cure for it (!); quite an achievement considering she hasn't published one research paper on the topic!
