I remember Stan Lee being asked in an interview of how he came up with the idea of Spider-Man using his powers to make money before Uncle Ben got killed. He said that he just asked himself: if he suddenly got super powers, what would he do with them? Make money or fight crime? He just said to himself, to make money.

The most insulting thing is that every character they race/gender swapped or pulled from other (often obscure) Marvel titles could have been replaced with pre-existing already diverse characters from actual Spidey comics. Sha Shan, Hobie Brown, Randy Robertson, Phillip Chang, Glory Grant. These are all canon Spider-Man characters.

Something about modern writing I noticed in "Discovery"; in modern writing, heroic characters constantly validate each other. Only monsters don't engage in constant validation of everyone around them. It sounds like this version of Spider-Man is being written in that way. Parker gets constant validation from everyone around him, and constantly validates them as well. Only the most blatant of villains doesn't engage in constant validation, with the result that the whole world is rather flat and bland, composed entirely of either constant-validaters, or pure villains. There are no shades of grey in a story this politicized.

The term I use for this sort of thing is 'saccharine'. A term used on the internet for things that are too sweet or too nice. I felt it in Sony's Spider-Man 2, when every important character knew Sign Language because Mile's girlfriend was deaf, and everyone seems to get along too well.

@@pizzatime4204 I wouldn't say he is still Peter Parker, he is still missing a lot of traits of Spider-Man. Like more independence, his mean streak, anger, his selfishness, isn't as smart as he could be (tbf, Peter's super high intelligence/genius gets downplayed way too often nowadays in media. Not just this cartoon. Really hoping we get Spider-Men stuff that truly focuses and shows how smart/genius Peter is again), more of human traits in general, etc. I wouldn't say he is still Peter Parker, he is very much lacking some of Peter's more interesting traits (though, tbf. So was MCU Spider-Man. Even though I still like MCU Spider-Man and his relationship with Tony and the Avengers. He was too childish, which this show's Peter kind of is too, and too lacking in independence - which Peter, who was created as more of a solo hero, and only sometimes was apart of teams, is not really great that this is the case for me. I miss Peter being more independent and self-reliant, instead of relying so much on others -, so it is not just an issue (imo) with this show. Speculator Spider-Man was a much better show and a MUCH better and great version of Peter, who actually had all these traits I am saying are missing. I miss Spider-Man/Peter Parker and Spider-Man cartoons like Speculator Spider-Man, and the older Spider-Men cartoon and it's Peter Parker. It's probably the friendless syndicated Spider-Man cartoon from the 80s. It's competently made but just dull. This was created during a time when cartoon censorship was at a peak and Spider-Man was not allowed to do things like hit people. It also just doesn't have the wacky flair of the Amazing Friends Version, sticking pretty close to the comics. Spider-Man 67 is definitely the worst on a technical level but it has a manic low-budget energy that makes it more interesting.

Hot take: I think this show is fine, because even if the art style isn't that great it is pretty unique and as for the boring 2 episodes, i just thought it was just laying down the foundation like getting to know the characters, learning about the world and just general preparation for the story. As for peters lack of flaws, isn't being immature a flaw itself one that he will maybe fixes when he finds out that norman was using him And lastly about peter being a garystu, that's a little extreme like so what if he isn't suffering every minute or his life isn't in constant hell this is a retelling of a story that was told 5 times already, there is a need to change the settings or else we would just get the same old story retold and don't get me wrong i like og spiderman story but i am also tired of seeing peter suffer in the comics which is why i like that he isn't that much of a loser in school, have new friends and an actual job that isn't the daily bugle, it is just a breath of fresh air to see peter winning in life. TLDR: this show isn't perfect but it isn't a dumpster fire too so I am pretty optimistic for this show

Exactly, Peter was an angry, selfish kid who only cared about his aunt and uncle and thought everyone else could kick rocks. That's why when he got superpowers he immediately went to "use them for money and attention" and when someone actually needed a superhero to stop a thief he told them to fuck off. The whole reason he realized having the powers meant he needed to use them responsibly is because he experienced the consequences of using his powers just for selfish gain. This is the crux of Peter's path to heroism and these dolts just took a massive dump all over it.

In my opinion I think you are wrong. Out of the 4 people at the internship literally the only person that likes Peter is Asha. Amadeus Cho constantly roasts him and talk about himself being better. Jeanne Foucault was sarcastic and straight told him to his face she can’t be bothered to remember him. Sounds like great friends. And his mentor? A massive prick. The only people in the entire building that wasn’t horrible reslly was Asha and Carla Conners. Next you brought up the pizza shop robbery. What actually happened was that Spider-Man explained what the woman had told him and then gave the PIZZA SHOP OWNER the choice of whether to send her to jail or to let her go. The shop owners chose to let her go. About people being friendly to him. It seemed like Nico was sort of disinterested at first but considering she saw him faint and nearly die (seemingly.) infront of her I imagine it kinda made a lasting impression with her and seemingly made him curious. Next the jock’s. Normally if the team captain says something the majority of the team copy his actions and what not. And why does the team captain like him? Because his girlfriend had told him Alot about how good she is. And yes, we know that Uncle Ben’s origin wasn’t featured here. But it also wasn’t featured till like the final 2 episodes of Spectacular Spider-Man and yet many praise that series as an amazing show. The plot of the first episode was a little slow but it’s called world building. You see doctor strange and venom to set up a later story line, you see Norman Osborn. In episode 2 we meet Carla Conners, Butane and many other future villains. Keep in mind they can’t just do everything within the first episode, it would feel way too bloated. By your logic spectacular, which you praised wouldn’t be very good since most of the episode is just fighting common criminals, school stuff and there’s only a brief clash against the vulture at the end of the episode.

İts suppose to have much more dynamic animation than all of the others. İts good, but its still not good as Spectacular and Ultimate. -They released this show after X-men 97. They vaguely talk about him, put a glimmer on May’s wedding ring (still strange to hear Peter be on first name basis there) and just say “Ever since Uncle Ben…” Given this show’s first few episodes I halfway expect to find out it’s a divorce she’s getting over or Ben ran off with the savings. The pizza scene hit me weird too but for a different reason. I was just expecting, in typical Parker Luck - not the Johnny Storm view of Parker Luck that seems to be the usage of the title in episode two - for the store owner to say they were playing him or point out the delivery vehicle got busted up and ask if Spidey was going to pay for all the pizzas they couldn’t make money on now. A free pizza… this really is a friendly neighborhood -for- Spider-Man. (The voice lead - who I was surprised wasn’t another Jack Quaid appearance - had to have been sarcastic. When they reported on the comment the other day I remember thinking, “How does a show with an LGBTQ+ African-American Harry Osbourn, Nico Minoru as a supporting character, a non-albino and decent guy Lonnie Lincoln, an intern group where Peter’s the only white male, African-American female Doc Connors, etc. make this guy think the show is going for the anti-woke crowd?)

He feels like a 26 year old who is lingering around in high school for some reason. Which feels like a waist because why even make him a teenager if he’s not going to act like one? Into the Spider-verse and Insomniac's Spider-man are probably the biggest positive reasons as to why I support Sony keeping the rights to the Spider-man films in some ways over Disney and having made more interesting narratives revolving around Peter or Miles. Because - holy shit - I cannot imagine Disney ever making a competent animated Spider-man show or film that isn't focus tested to hell and back to appeal to the dumbest audience possible. I've seen this trend happen so often after the release of the MCU films with how Disney thinks Spider-man should be that so many fans have complained about it ever since Homecoming. I really hope more people notice and keep calling out these cheap imitations for what they are - bland, soulless, corporate, watered-down crap attempting to wear the skin of something it never was, like all those live-action slop remakes that Disney keeps making of their classic animated films.

8:05 um, what? Comics Kamala had tons of issues. The reason why she was so popular was because she acted a lot like a modern Peter Parker. It wasn’t until after her creator left the comic that it started to turn down hill and when the MCU got their hands on it plummeted.

You could have gotten be to believe this sucks purely on the premise that they're doing a spider-man series AGAIN! What, they couldn't bring back spectacular spider man? Were the concepts in the 90s series too much? Even Sam Raimi's trilogy had a short series! Do! Something! New!

I hate how Marvel these days is trying so hard to turn Spider-Man into a cringe stereotypical generic modern teen archetype. We get it he's supposed to be relatable, but by that point they're about to erase his "Peter Parker" persona and just turn him into white Miles Morales. Spectacular Spider-Man is the perfect example of how to do modern teenage Spider-Man without taking away his classic traits just for the sake of making him relatable to the new generations.

Does the show address the white genocide that appears to have happened in New York for Peter to be the only white person left in the city? Seems an intriguing plot point they've set up. Bit confused as to why Harry Osborn and Flash Thompson are black girls now though. Were they mutated by Miles Warren?

Exactly, Peter can have friends, success in school, no problem paying the rent, he can even have an Uncle Ben surviving the shooting, but without Uncle Ben becoming the victim of Spider-Man's lack of volunteering to help law enforcement, you have no Spider-Man...
@thewolfofwallstreet627
@thewolfofwallstreet627 5 күн бұрын
To add to your points, Peter Parker was always something of a social outcast, and a loser who couldn't get girls to like him prior to becoming Spider-Man. That's why he developed even more of an ego after he got his powers, which resulted in him being humbled by Uncle Ben's death, as you alluded to. This made the character relatable to a lot of comic book readers, who read the comics to feel empowered. And considering Peter wasn't that much different than the reader was going through problems like paying bills, putting up with an overbearing boss, and etc, it made him very relatable. At no point should Peter ever feel like a Gary Stu. Ever. That's not who Peter Parker is.

Literally the only 2 spiderman cartoons that started with his origin was the 1960's cartoon, the 2017 cartoon, and i think the mtv cgi cartoon. Spectacular Spiderman also time skipped past the uncle ben death and instead had the death be central later on in the series. The 90's spiderman cartoon also did that. Same with both 80's spiderman cartoons.

And the thing is, it's entirely possible to completely change the entire setup while still making it a good story. Just look at the new Ultimate Comics Spider-man run. Those comics changed every aspect with Peter never getting his powers at 15 because of time travel, Uncle Ben still being alive, Aunt May dying recently in an explosion, Peter being married to MJ and being a father, choosing to have the spider bite him, etc. The reason that works and this show doesn't is because it's interesting to see Peter become Spider-man as a father and how his age impacts his methods and mentality about it. And the new timeline creates more opportunities for the writers to get extra creative instead of feeling pressured to follow certain story beats for the hundredth time. It's almost funny how this era of MCU Spider-man is so against addressing Uncle Ben's existence that it's gotten to the point he's been completely erased from the origin entirely. He canonically died before the spider bite, so Peter never has that experience of being selfish with his powers and learning this lesson of responsibility that motivates him. They're so scared of painting any negative light on their characters that they make them as squeaky clean as possible (Iron Man 2 was supposed to adapt the "Demon in a bottle" storyline that addressed Tony's alcoholism, but the executives didn't want kids to see Iron Man in that light, so they minimized it to the Palladium poisoning. Same concept here of not wanting Peter to ever look selfish or irresponsible). It's just so boring to the point where Lonnie Lincoln is already a way more interesting character than Peter is. When a character's only flaw is that they're awkward, it just empty because that's not something to overcome or learn from, it's the idea of what teenagers are like. They've leaned so far into Spider-man's youth that they completely forgot about how being Spider-man helped Peter grow up and mature. Which is why it's so agonizing when Peter acts exactly the same as he normally does with or without the mask. There's such little depth or charm to the character because he's been branded with being an overly polite clutz that it's becoming the new standard because people think *that's* what makes him relatable. I don't want to gate-keep what Spider-man is supposed to be in every single adaptation, but I do think that all the choices they've made so far just make Peter a boring character. That scene where he vouched for the thief would have worked better with the lens of Peter knowing what it's like to make a stupid decision and regretting it. Something in how she talked would have resonated with him, so him vouching is less out of naivety and more out of understanding what it's like to make mistakes and wanting to be better. And funnily enough out of everything MCU related with Spider-man, his appearance is Civil War is my favourite characterization. Similar to how Stan Lee had the one opportunity to write the comic that gave this cautionary tale, Spider-man's appearance in Civil War was so last minute with such a small role that the Russo Brothers had to nail it. So in that small appearance, they give us everything we need to know about this Peter. He dumpster dives, he gets defensive, he built all his own gear, he doesn't tell Aunt May because he knows she'd freak out, and he gives a perfect modernized rendition of the "great power" mantra that brings back the original version where it's a lesson that Peter came to realize instead of Uncle Ben's iconic phrase or last words to Peter. Then Homecoming shows up and exaggerates these traits where he seems even less experienced than before, has a best friend we don't know any history about, Aunt May's become a sex object because Tony complimented her, and Peter is suddenly a big fan of Star Wars because he referenced the Empire Strikes Back to take down Giant Man with phrasing that sounded like he only saw it once or twice years ago. He was flanderized from the start and it became all he was defined as. I'm still gonna watch the rest of the show to make a complete opinion, but there's just so many things that reflect the problems of these modern renditions of Spider-man. Side notes I don't want to make a paragraph out of; - While Peter's pursued older women like Betty Brandt in past renditions, making it his old babysitter is just weird and is designed for second hand embarrassment in a relationship we know will never actually happen (Compare that to Spectacular Spider-man's Liz and how it makes the fans invested in the relationship even though it doesn't work out). - Aunt May looks like she's had 3 rounds of plastic surgery. - Having a cartoon try to emulate the real world and real people makes it stiff and restricted in what they can do. - Stop making homemade costumes intentionally bad, especially if it's a suit that sticks around for more than a short sequence/narrative chapter - Peter sucks at keeping his identity a secret. - Everyone is too accepting of Spider-man, I doubt New York has ever been this polite - While Spider-man has seeked the approval of others in his early days, it's been an internal desire, not something he vocalizes like being hurt that people think his crappy costume looks like crap. - With each adaptation, Peter's classic anger and attitude gets diminished to the point he isn't allowed to be angry unless the symbiote is at play or a loved on is dead. A super polite Gary-Stu just doesn't feel like he'd ever become a vigilante. This show just has a lot of concepts where some work in the moment, then the rest just bog it down. I especially wish it was in 2D animation because the posters and character sheets look better when they aren't 3D models with flat shading. It's crazy that the MTV Spider-man objectively has better animation than this show because they're more creative with what they do (I do like the 60's inspired art style, it just doesn't belong on 3D models the way they did it.

Agreed with the homemade suits. Peter is creative and a genius too the point where he can create a complex device such as web-shooters, and web-fluid too do what most wires in real life can’t replicate, in some adaptions create tracking devices, But somehow isn’t creative enough to make his original iconic costume? Never made sense.

They changed everything so much that it isn't even Spider-Man anymore. It's just called Spider-Man to con people into tuning in. They use the name because if they made this an original story, nobody would watch it. These writers have no talent and no idea how to make a hero story. It's all the same nonsense one liners, poor motivations, and weird race commentary.
