Maybe controversial, but I always imagined Mace would've fallen to the Dark Side had he killled Palpatine. Mace plays on the fine line between light and dark all the time, he has to in order to use Vaapad. He had to absorb the darkness of Palpatine in order to reflect its strength back at him, even if miniscule, Palpatine's darkness would've influenced Mace. Not to mention, in that moment, Mace was livid. Not only had Skywalker disobeyed orders, but Skywalker was also pleading for the life of someone who had just gutted two jedi masters. This isnt even gerting into the disullusionment Mace would've felt in that moment, of having served under a sith lord for over a decade and not realizing it, of serving a Republic he had an attachment to, which now had been revealed to be objectively corrupt. Which Mace had vehemently rejected the notion of during the Clone Wars. If Mace had allowed his darkness to influence him and he killed Palpatine in anger, he would've fallen to the dark side. If not immediately, at least over time.
