I know Sonic's first and "true" game is on the Mega Drive, so the platform choice for Sega Mario makes sense. But in terms of technical specs, I guess the Master System (which was my first introduction to Sonic and home console gaming) would have made this more interesting.

I didn’t realize how limited the NES soundchip was until now

The NES soundchip is capable of much greater things, it’s just that Somari doesn’t take great use of its capabilities, nor is it well made. For better examples of the NES’ true capabilities, I recommend checking out the soundtrack to Journey to Silius or Solstice. Those games provide insane examples as to what the NES could do in terms of audio.

You know there are Mario and Sonic remakes on the respective console power. Sonic 1 on the master system and SMB1 on SMAS on the SNES.

someone did a good job to port Super Mario in Genesis, It's pretty much 1:1 besides of music You should have also checked out the Improved Version of Sonic on NES

Yeah this is not really fair since Sonic 1 is a 16 bit game and SMB is 8 bits according to their consoles but still this is cool as heck.

You should have used the sonic SNES fan port instead of the somari patch to make it fair. The nes is a console generation behind the genesis. It would have made for a better comparison.

yuck! the games soundtracks are horrible with the other's soundfonts. the ONLY improvement was to the SMB FX. I noticed on the NES sonic, the creator included the crappy little glitch that the nes soundchips has where half the ST channels are too low volume.
