He was a sentimental old man, sentimental people in places of leadership, especially military leadership, are worse than idealists. The best Hokage was, arguably, Senju Tobirama because he was a realist. I’d place him and Hatake Kakashi in the same Hokage tier list bracket. S - Hatake Kakashi, Senju Tobirama A - Namikaze Minato, Senju Tsunade B - Senju Hashirama, Uzumaki Naruto C - Sarutobi Hiruzen D - Shimura Danzo (Pretty sure he was like an Interim Hokage at one point, but yeah, he sucked ass, worse than Sarutobi) These ratings are not based on power, they’re based on things like efficacy and mindset for the position.

I’m honestly tired of the ANBU trope… it’s so overused that it’s incredibly boring and cringe, no matter how good the story is. That and the ones where he joins the Akatsuki for… some inexplicable reason that never makes sense. Going rogue doesn’t make sense either because all major villages, Akatsuki, and everyone in between would be his enemy and he simply wouldn’t have the time to train or do anything because he’d be constantly tracked and attacked by everyone and their mother- and with Zetsu out there it would just be completely infeasible, he wouldn’t be able to hide from Zetsu if he figured out a Jinchuriki left it’s village. Especially, the Nine Tails Jinchuriki. Only feasible way Naruto is leaving the village is with Jiraiya or Tsunade because they have the means to protect him until he grows strong enough on his own. A unique story would be if the Toads raised him, that would be cool and also keep him hidden from the villages and Akatsuki.
