Actually it's refreshing, you have no idea how many anime or manga that has a plot convenience in favor of the villains. I mean is it really so wrong for a protagonist to be an overpowered badass?

Not really, it's just convention. Everyone likes an underdog story and having an overpowered hero from the start takes away many of the stakes. That doesn't mean it can't be done well, of course, the protagonist's character likeability and the side characters would just have to pull double duty. Overlord did this fairly well.

If you're going to nerf a powerful character then you better have it done with the appropriate effort and respect that character deserves. Perfect example of this trope done poorly. Nobody likes it when Goku gets killed by a stray laser because he was 'off guard' even though he survived far more dangerous attacks in far weaker forms while he was way more distracted. Also the little fact that he can sense energy.
