The Japanese archipelago was widespread whereas the Korean peoples, depending upon which kingdom and period we reference (Koryo, Shilla, Koguryo, etc.) were centralised on one peninsula and part of Manchurian China. A Korean navy would have to be survivable on the open water between Korea and Japan, and their strategy for conquering Japan would have to start on smaller islands such as Hokkaido and Shikoku, on which they could gain a foothold and ferry troops in order to mass for invasions of the larger islands, especially Honshu. This still depends upon a capacity to maintain the sealanes between Korea and Japan and an ability to raise troops on the Peninsula for deployment to Japan.

I have a nit pick with regards to the mongol invasion part, Genghis Khan only invaded the west because the Shah of Khwarazmian killed his envoys when he taught he was slighted by the great khan. The message being “ I am the master of the lands of the rising sun while you rule those of the setting sun. Let us conclude a firm treaty of friendship and peace.” Indicating that he saw the empire to the west and its ruler as equal to his own. Meanwhile the shah saw this as an insult. So unless the Byzantine ruler of that time was particularly nitwitted, highly unlikely since it requires high levels of cunning and intrigue to survive the den of vipers that is the Byzantine court. There’s also the fact that the mongols wanted a stable trade partner since they were quite busy conquering the entirety of the east. So having friends in the west is the most optimal and economically viable strategy. It would be highly unlikely for the mongols to look westward since China alone is richer than entire civilisations. Unless some extremely unfortunate events happen.

Crassus was foolish to try and conquer the parthians. He did so on his own accord for personal reasons than for the empire. Rome and parthia were at relative peace until that moment. Emperor Augustus would restore the peace with Parthia which helped make Pax Roma possible. Emperor Augustus stated that the empire was big enough and would be very difficult to manage if it expanded too much further. So even if Rome did conquor Parthia, it is unlikely it would be able to hold the territory for long.

I don't think the Roman Empire would have been able to hold Persia very long due to size stresses. The Empire had faced pressures from being oversized since at least the late 2nd century BC, and catalyzed the Imperial courts of Marius, Sulla, Pompey, Crassus, Caesar, Antony, Brutus, Octavian, and onward. The Principate was only the illusion of stability, there were rebellions throughout, and the moment the court showed weakness, usurpations occurred and brought on the crisis of the third century and many splinter Empires, that was only really solved with the reforms of Diocletian. With Rome owning Persia, those pressures would have been MUCH heavier. It would be ludicrously easy for a powerful ruler at one end of the Empire to rebel, the crisis of the third century would be the crisis of the first century, and I think the splinter Empires would be stronger and longer lasting.

Rome had a habit of adopting things from conquered people. Since Rome conquers Persia, perhaps they adopts the Persian practice of greater religious tolerance. This means Christianity still comes about but because Rome doesn't oppresse it, which actually prevents it from taking over the Empire IOTL. This could also mean that Buddhism spreads in the West when Rome conquers Bactria. Bactria was an Indo-Greek Kingdom founded following the death of Alexander the Great in modern-day Afghanistan. They had converted to Buddhism. Since a number of them spoke Greek, it would mean with translating The Vedas into Mediterranean Greek and Latin would be pretty easy.

Ok. Some little criticism. As far as I know Caesar had about 20 legions (100.000 to 120.000 men) and an unacounted number of Auxilares prepared for his invasion of Parthia while sending Marc Anthony of with 8 more legion to conquer Dacia. So Caesar didn't have 60.000 men but about three to four times as many prepared for his invasion. As for a civil war in the west. The only chance for Caesar to go conquering in the east would have been a failed assassination attempt. Quite probably there wouldn't be anybody left in the west to start a civil war. Also most of the troops used in this civil war had been forces pulled together for the invasions of Dacia and Parthia. So no troops and no commanders equals no civil war in the west.

The what I think is the POD of Hesperian trilogy. It's kind of my own headcanon but it's based on clues in the trilogy. The Empire remain solvent up to at least the 1200s CE. Spoilers if your interested When the Danish Vikings come raiding Britannia and Gaul, the Romans defeat them and make them vassal States. Because of Roman need for advanced warships, they contract Norse shipwrights. This eventually leads to discovery of the new world when Vikings come back with spices & gold unbeknownst to the Romans from the Yucatan Maya. This leads to to the assembly of a legion to North America which in this timeline is called Nova Hesperia (New Land of the West). The legion is defeated by Cahokia (near modern day St Louis), however this causes horses to be reintroduced to Hesperia along adding technologies like metal working and writing learned from captured legionaries. The current Roman Emperor is at war with Genghis Khan who was trying to invade Kiev (Ukraine) who have some relation to Rome. If I were to predict the future in this timeline, following the death of Genghis Khan during his attempted invasion of the West Coast of Hesperia his sons fight for control of the empire. Kublai Khan still declares the Yuan Dynasty. The trade from the Silk Road or the capturing of Chinese Alchemist during a war with the Mongols leads the introduction of printing and Qin salt AKA gunpowder. This could lead to the rise of Ireland and Scandinavia as a major political powers as also they would have accrued wealth from their trade with the Hesperians via Vinland. We're also like to see a number of intermingling between European Traders and Hesperians especially in Port Towns. The Mayan city-states are unified into a centralized Kingdom and it begins expanding further into Mexico and Guatemala. This is achieved through horses and steel gain from the Mongols. The Black Death still spreads throughout Eurasia and comes to the new world. The impact in Europe is far less due to Roman medicine and practice of good hygiene. The native tribes having have contact with animals that the Vinlanders brought over from Europe and adopting Roman bathing practices increases their survival rate against European diseases however their population would still be extremely impacted by the Black Death.

Lets say ceaser conquered all of persia and made augustus governer of most of mesopotamia and most of modern iran (technically not a second emporer but still getting 2 provinces larger then rome had ever seen before). Since britain required 4 legions for a long period to keep the population from revolting i would estimate mesopotamia needs at least 6 permanently stationed legions and the to be iranian province probably more than that. Include half a dozen other provinces that also would be created and will each require about 2 legions (these could also just become client states . That comes up to 20+ legions required to prevent rebellions (some provinces could be less rebilious perhaps preferring roman rule over persian, these regions would provide some additionel specialised auxiliary troops think of heavy cavalry and mounted archers, as well as soldiers specialised in desert warfare). This would mean ceaser needs more than 100 000 legionairies to pacify the newly acquired land who all had to come from the west and even if he managed to gather those troops without under protecting the west he would still need the diplomatic skills of a dozen cicero's to pacify the persian elite. So yes i think ceaser could have conquered persia, but keeping control would require the combined life's work of ceasar and augustus although to be honest if you had to chose any two emporers to do it,it would be them. For ceaser this would be like conquering 10 gallia's at the same time and gallia alone took him 10 years to pacify

Also its almost impossible to conquer the iranian plateau, modern day Afghanistan or even Pakistan for that matter so anyone conquering the persian empire would be halted at the persian gulf or waste recources trying to go further. And if they conquered it they would need to stack it with legions coming from the other side of the world

I personally think Julius Caesar wouldn’t have had much of a problem defeating the Persian/Parthians however looking at Gaul it took Caesar 10 years to secure and ,mostly, pacify it. The problem comes in that Caesar was relatively old and suffered from epilepsy so I’m not sure he would have been able to pacify and transform the Persian territories into a proper province. Then again given that the people in Persia were used to a single government power system and not individual tribes I can see them accepting Roman rule faster then the Gauls, it all depends in my mind who the governor would be after and wether or not the Romans would be able to incorporate the citizens of the new territories into the Roman whole.
@NJ-eo2oc3 жыл бұрын
You can't seriously compare it to Gauls lol. Parthia/Persia was an ADVANCED EMPIRE and has Proven time and time again to be as Strong as the Romans. Ceasar would have faced a likely defeat specially against a military genius(general Surena)

Bro you compare Gauls to Parthians?the first battle between Parthia and Rome was a Major defeat for the Romans,they lost to a 10 000 Parthian Soldiers when they had 50 000 soldiers

@@aneesh2115 aside from few elite corps and mercenaries the Persian army was mostly composed by poorly trained men, sometimes just peasants equipped with spear and shield. Their best weapons were their chariots and arrows like barbarian tribes in Britannia. so just because someone fights in the front lines, they are a great leader? Alexander only won because he had basically the best army in the world and many allies, he was NOT a good commander.

If the Roman empire had persisted until the time of Genghis Khan in relative peace, never conquered by Germanic tribes in the west or muslim Arabs in the East, they probably would have had tanks and fighter jets by the time Genghis Khan came along. That's one of the factors you completely leave out in this video: technological advancement. In a more stable and peaceful Europe/Middle East, the modern age would have come along much, much sooner.

no, the Romans were not a hyper advancement driven people. They mostly took what other people did better and merely did more of it due to superior industry. They got most of their armor and weapons from the Celts, just they could afford more armored warriors.
@S.P.Q.Rrespublicas10 ай бұрын
@@shadowofhawk55 depends. You can always say they do more than open doors with steam power. yes they had steam power. Heron of Alexandria created it, and it was used to open temple doors in egypt. And, they did have a watermill or two. We can always just say, "oh, they actually do a tiny bit more than this". In our world, from the Industrial Revolution it took us 2 centuries to land on the moon....if Rome has steam power in the 1st century AD, you'd think they'd do something in a millenia.
