Welcome to the Heavy Spoilers show, I'm your host Paul and this video we're breaking down the finale of What if.
-
Season 2 is now at an end and episode 9 has a lot to unpack from it. Throughout this video we're gonna be going through it all and breaking down the easter eggs and details in it. We're also gonna be giving our thoughts on the season and going over our reaction to it. Please hit that thumbs up one last time and if you enjoy make sure you subscribe.
With that out the way, thank you for clicking this, now let's get into What If Season 2.
-
So Strange Supreme has been a big character in the show with him debuting back in season 1. I think that that episode is still probably my favourite with it creating a man who destroyed his entire universe. Come the end of the entry we see as this is reborn and it never gets put on that path of destruction. That is because strange defeats the devil on his shoulder....like literally...and stops himself from being born in it. Strange no longer being alive means his Christine doesnt die and thus he never goes down that dark path.

i feel what they did to Dr Strange here, is the same mistake they did with Wanda in the multiverse of madness. wanda had some beautiful character development in wandavision. you could see she learnt, from her mistakes in the end. that she could not bring back Vision at the cost of people's lives and freedom. wwhen we see her again in MOM it was strange to see how she was willong to torture andkill innocent people to bring back her child. so it was odd to see this dr strange do the same. he learnt from his mistakes and seemed to have had accepted the death of Christine. it was a good episode. but that part doesnt sit well with me

He wasn't being driven by just his grief, I love that it was a demon inside of him that fed on that grief and caused him to slowly go mad. Sometimes the good guy loses, and Dr. Strange was still a good guy at heart which is why he sacrificed himself for his world. He finally got his wish, save his world but let him die. Broke my heart at the end, seeing him gain everything just to never be able to see it. Great Video!!❤

Strange Supreme is my favorite caracter coming out of it and I still belive it was a huge disappointment not being used in the Multivers of Madness, considering his story with Christine and the plot line in MoM with Christine. There were seeming parallels between Strange Supreme and Wanda, in that they were both after someone whom they saw as a source to regaining their worlds: Chavez’s abilities to traverse the multiverse for Wanda to get her boys back; Kahori for Strange Supreme, in order to feed the forge and recreate a world with Christine.

I didn’t mind strange being the villain because of how they showed the evil spirit of strange supreme being separated from the light side of strange, like if the good strange he absorbed last season was still in there trying to stop supreme strange. It did undermine the ending of last season but it also added more because obviously strange’s only goal since losing Christine was getting her back, everything else was a side quest, so when last season finished he started his plan to get her back.

At the start of the episode, when I saw Kahhori dashing throughout the woods around Peggy... I thought that it was a Quicksilver variant referecing from AoU... I felt the same way about Strange at first but the more I thought about it, it wasnt Strange that did it, it was all the power he absorbed. It took him over and amplified all his feelings while he was alone for all that time. He eventually won and pulled a butterfly effect and eliminated himself from time its self to save everyone. I do wish it was a different villain but I didnt mind it after I thought abut it some more, it would have been nice if there was a episode that showed him fighting with his demons before eventually losing which leads to the finally

Yeah see that’s the issue, he doesn’t fight his demons till the end. His reversion back is off screen. I believe a conversation with the watcher early in the season warning strange, then shortly after the demons arguing with strange that the watcher is wrong, taking over, would’ve been good.

I get the criticism about Strange but if you really think about it no matter how great Strange character arch is his whole reason for existence is Christine in every universe so it’s pretty on track imo. Sure most ppl don’t want to see him like that but I think it’s kind of naive to think that he wouldn’t go back to his roots of trying to get Christine back. It’s just what he does and they stuck to it. I do agree with the criticism but I think they stayed true to the overall concept of strange in the end.

I felt the same thing with strange became a villain again because I liked the character. But it makes sense from a story stand point. Strange supreme didn’t really atone with what he did. He lamented that it didn’t work and asked for him to used as a sacrifice to save his world. After that, he just fought with the Guardians of the Multiverse but it was more of a showcase about how powerful he is rather than how much he grew. Now, he got to pay and take back what he did.

This episode is overall mix bag. Everything felt rushed and they threw it all in the window. You're Critisms are valid and pointed out very well. Doctor Strange deserved better and they built him as something interesting and they ended it as very dissappinting. His character was already developed, Doctor Strange falling back to depravity could've worked if not only if they did better with the story and actually built it up. But in the end they left it for the viewers to understand what had happened to him. Although, the action was amazing and can't wait for season 3.

I think Peggy technically incorporated the infinity ultron suit into her own suit so it should be able to disipate any harmful excess energy if you want to explain it away that way. Also you could make an argument she used the stones together for a powered up attack and not something way more taxing like dusting half a universes sentient beings or bringing back previously dusted people. One thing with Tony's sacrifice is that he wasn't prepared to make the sacrfice but he did anyway narratively if Tony used Uru metal or Vibranium to engineer a suit that could better handle Infinity Stone energy he might have been able to survive or be a lot less maimed then he was at the end of Endgame

I do agree with the issues of reusing his motivation from last season but considering that he has been isolated alone ever since with nothing to grow off of put a his thoughts loneliness, sadness, and grief plus the manifestation of all the evilness he's absorbed become as powerful as he is I do think his turn to Evil did make sense. Like in real life typically you have other things to do to help you grow out of the dark place you find yourself in but Stephen literally had nothing to do but watch a trapped prism all by himself with no way of truly addressing his grief.

Honestly the first season overall was a lot better. We got rewarded for wathcing every episode, as the characters from them appeared in the final battle. However here there was nothing. The stand out of this season for me was the Helas redemption episode and i was really disappointed she didnt appear in the finale (she migth have been powerfull enough to even battle strange). I dont know if i got more sencitive to bad writing, but i felt this season had a lot of it. The first couple episodes were just horrible and the season only started picking up steam later on. But then of course the finale, whitch just straigth up shits on the best WHAT IF episode ever and the whole character of Strange and ended up just being "Lets throw magic balls at each other cuz why not". As a big simp for Hayley myself, i must say that captain Carter is just a boring character swap and i dont understand the decision to make her the "main character" of the show. God, damn it. The finale definitely needed a solid rewrite. I think i know what could have been done. Listen to this. What if the episode began with Strange in his sanctum observing the multiverse. He sees a variant of Strange about to loose his Christine. After a tear drops down his cheek, he mans up and decides to intervein and safes her. Strange variant and Christine both thank him, but then watcher appears, deletes Christine and then teleports himself and Strange to his sanctum. He then tells him, that if he want to observe the multiverse he cannot intervein and must swear an oath. Strange gets pissed and disagrees. He then starts to scout the multiverse for powerfull beings to help him overthrow the watcher and stop the suffering in other universes. I dont know what writer i am but i fell like this could be a good setup, with the theme being about the question of interviening or not and stranges character arc would not be ignored but expanded on.

It makes sense that Strange would grow in his resentment for The Watcher, given the hypocrisy behind his refusal to help Strange while later asking him to help defeat Ultron and feeling cheated afterward. However, nobody took the time to write this explanation into the show. They could have made Kilmonger the devil in his ear after he won the suit from Zola. As it stands, we receive no explanation for how Strange evolved from a Multiverse Avenger to a multiversal threat, and the Watcher seems indifferent to or unaware of these events despite them coming from someone he trapped in a pocket dimension.

Made sense that the final villain would have to be someone we knew, as introducing a character this late would make little sense. If there had been any foreshadowing for strange going rogue since the beginning of the season, this wouldn’t have felt like coming out of nowhere. Dude has literal demons inside him, it is plausible to have issues with control, especially in loneliness. And this resolution to the character was better than him being just a watcher of one universe. There could have been one episode right at the begging in the lines of What if Supreme Strange lost control…? And this finale would have been a lot better

I totally agree, I made a comment about it. The Sanctum was weird because it just raised more questions, like is this in the crystal bubble universe or is it a different universe? Also the Forge being brought in was also weird because it didn’t really raise the stakes much, and we had no backstory on it until they explained it made universes, which sounds like something I would want to know about.

Yeah on rewatch this episode is frustratingly inconsistent. Why anybody continues to fight hand-to-hand after witnessing Kilmonger snapping Thanos away is insane to me. They gotta drop the stones, man. They’re done. The mystique is gone and every time somebody else uses them with minimal effort it’s like why the fuck did Tony Stark have to die?

If there was no supreme strange then how was infinity ultron stopped. Seems like they didn't think about the retroactive effects of removing supreme strange. Also how can the pocket dimensions just break like glass. If strange has mastered time and is a multiversal being, how can he not have foreseen this fight and how it will play out. Nothing about this episode really makes any sense. It's also kind of screwed up that the watcher is responsible for most of this by asking strange for help and breaking his oath.

Kahhori, and to be blunt this entire episode is exactly the issue I have with the MCU right now. Let's talk about this episode and the entire What If show, from both seasons 1 and 2 shall we? Let's start with Kahhori, gosh I was so excited for this character, it was fully original, had an amazing story and plot points, and was such a good setup that even had the potential to tie up plot holes born from other media like Wanda Vision with Wanda's backstory, that totally alienates the origins of her powers from her brother Pietro. Imagine how cool it would have been if the MCU found a way to show where Pietro got his super speed from and used this, that would have been great, but now I can't look at Kahhori without thinking about this anymore. So where to start with this mess... First off, regarding Kahhori, even if we ignore what was established in her very own origin episode which showcased her struggling to fend off, and failed to defend herself from fucking Spanish cannonballs, that broke through her barrier. At her full power, at MOST should be the equivalent to the space stone itself, since that's where her powers come from. So even if we wank her power to its max, and let's be honest it shouldn't even be at that level yet, but if we're being generous, Wong established in is dialogue in Infinity War that The Big Bang created the infinity stones that govern an aspect of the universe, and since there are only 6 at its MAXIMUM potential, the space stone, and I guess in this case by extension, Kahhori, should be 1/6 Universal in power... ... do understand now why people are confused and upset on why Strange Supreme, who not only captured and imprisoned Infinity Fucking Ultron, who was a full scale Multiversal threat, in mere seconds, and from what this episode established, MANY more individuals of both Hero and Villain alike with power of the same or potentially greater power than even Infinity Ultron, was struggling to seal and contain Kahhori and Peggy...? I won't even chalk this up to girl power or anything like that, this just shouldn't be a thing period from what's been established, at this current point in time, especially with this episode, Strange Supreme should be the most powerful being in the MCU multiverse by a good long shot. So no, those two shouldn't be able to do shit, especially when you consider the fact that even more powerful people than them failed to do so against Strange, in fact they were barely able to stop him even when amped by every artifact in the MCU multiverse, save for The Book of Vishanti and The Dark Hold. And you mean to tell me they were able to fend off Strange...? The funny thing is they technically didn't even do it, since at the end Strange just refused to fly, teleport, or do anything to get out from saving himself which I guess was to do the right thing, which if it was done better I could accept that. But why I have an issue with even that is because the only reason this is happening is because they character assassinated the shit out of him by removing the development he got from the last season finale, grief is not the get out of jail free card. They did the same shit with Wanda, who at the end of Endgame, from her talk with Clint was shown to be at peace with Vision, and then made her go through the same shit but even worse in Wanda Vision, showing that she in fact learned nothing, and then the end of even that show where she tries to get her kids back shows she leaned nothing again as shown in Multiverse of Madness. (Man they really hoed my man strange out of a movie with that one) The writers have to stop removing or nullifying character development and creating inconsistencies for the sake of these dumbass plots, and make real, genuine stakes that don't interfere with characters and the greater universe that's been established, cause otherwise you get shit like this that starts off amazing, and has so much potential, only to drop it when it counts.

I think a lot of people are overreacting over this because you could see Aunty the end of season two stranger wasn’t completely changed. He still wasn’t happy you could see he was sad, so it’s not a giant leap to think that he could become evil again or be consumed by vengeance, which is what happened.

So taking what is likely the most selfish version of strange that has literally absorbed demons into himself for power, kept him alone to babysit the other greatest evils in the multiverse and him backsliding doesn't make sense? Hes stronger than gods and he knows the Watcher won't stop him. Now, could there have been more after credits showing him going universe to universe "collecting"? Yeah. Would've fleshed it out more.

I feel the episode could've been better had Strange actually been bearing that penance. Capturing universe destroyers overlooking them. But it's revealed he's taking in anyone deemed a possible threat. Wanting so bad to compensate for his failure in his universe, he's blinded to see the good out there trusting others with that level of power he had. And then someone actually does escape and tries to gain all that multiversal power. And it's Strange redeeming himself from his actions alongside Peggy and Kahorti. Whoever escaped breaks orbs freeing villains, and Strange breaks orbs himself freeing heroes from this season as they fend the line. They win and as a reward Strange can bring back his universe, but still chooses not to exist in it. So now without a universe to call home he works with Peggy and The Watcher going to what's next.

The What If finale has created the perfect opportunity to have a misplaced Peggy Carter taking the scenic route back home as she comes across Steve Rogers traveling and replacing the infinity stones. It would not break canon if the Peggy Carter at the end of Endgame was Captain Carter!

In my mind, Strange tricked Kahhori(and possibly others) into helping him kidnap some of his victims. He could've shown her the bleak future we find her in, and then led her to believe that removing certain people from the board would save the universe. Her whole mission was liberation, and he could've easily used that against her.

Marvel keeps finding ways to divide its own fanbase, by repeating mistakes that divided the fanbase. Khahoori can do everything, including wield magical weapons she has no reason to know how to wield. Peggy is suddenly even MORE overpowered than that, somehow. "Somehow, Palpatine returned." And Strange Supreme is outgunned and outmatched by these two as if he doesn't have centuries of superior abilities. They were doing so well with this season. Seriously.

Strange's arc just went to the ground. So disappointing. I thought he was recruiting powerful beings for another threat. In my head, I thought he was being corrupted and since his power is so vast. It could damage the multiverse. Do while his senses are intact, he gathers other beings to form a team to beat 'himself' and therefore protect the multiverse.

I am not upset about Strange's betrayal, i could see Strange's betrayal coming miles away, if you learned anything from doctor strange 2 is that with great power comes great power hungry bad guys and they repeat that loop from America to Scarlet Witch, to Kahhori to Supreme strange. Also if you read the plot from disney plus about this episode it says, the greatest threat to all existence is closer than captain carter thinks, which usually means the betrayal of a friend, the biggest clue of all was that Supreme Strange, he had nothing left to lose.
