His captaincy was the 2nd half of his career, but we must not forget the facts which made him the first choice for captaincy after Sachin. Before his arrival, India team had a terrible tendency that they would win ODIs only when Sachin plays well. This streak was changed by Sourav Ganguly who reduced the dependency on Sachin by winning so many ODIs almost single handedly! We also must not forget that for many months he was the no. 1 ranked ODI batsman in the world before becoming the captain! I'm confident Ganguly and Vvs laxman were the greatest timers of cricket ball in the history of the game. And let me tell u vvs Laxman was sacrificed for mo.kaif in 2003 wc. That's why india could not win the world cup. Laxman was as dangerous as sachin against australia.

When Ganguly took captaincy, Indian cricket was on shambles. The dark days could have killed Indian cricket forever. On top, the selector lobby over the years became so powerful, that they were almost dictating the entire team management and captain.
