Let's rewrite the Buu Saga by getting rid of Super Saiyan 3!

Today, I ask a fundamentally different question. What if Super Saiyan 3 didn’t exist at all within the series? Now I understand that some of you may see this question and think to moments of Goku or Gotenks needing it at certain points in the Arc so I will say here - this is a rewrite. While normal What Ifs seek to change one part of a story in order to answer what would happen with one small change - this is seeking to change the story at multiple points to improve characters and their interactions in a way I personally prefer. The goal of this rewrite is to show that Super Saiyan 3 isn’t required to hit the important story beats of the Buu Arc, while also removing any character destruction found within the original story. I don't think you're accounting for the passage of time in this. For one, it took trunks far more time to find the dragon radar so a ss2 goku vs majin buu would be imminent and furthermore. Majin Buu's power grew the more time passes so he'd be stronger than when he first fought majin vegeta putting Goku at a disadvantage. Secondly, gohan probably wouldn't have unlocked his ultimate form since goku took part in gohan's training for that small moment which led to the breaking of the sword. Many things would've been shaken up in this story.

I would have Goku use Kaio-Ken x20 while in his Super Saiyan 2 form when he fights f*t Buu, obviously, it will make f*t Buu a cake walk, but there would be two srawvithat would make this more interesting. 1) Using Kaio-Ken x20 while in any Super Saiyan form would be an idea that just popped into Goku's mind while fighting f*t Buu. 2) While he should be able to make light work of him, the strain of using both Super Saiyan and Kaio-Ken, simultaneously would cause him to change back into his base form quickly. The plot of your what if would continue on as you planned, and in the aftermath of defeating Kid Buu, Goku would reflect on the Kaio-Ken and it's drawbacks, he would then consult King Kai and discuss mastering the Kaio-Ken the same way he mastered the initial Super Saiyan transformation. And that's where the Buu arc rewrite would end.

Hmmmm......interesting. You changed it from Kid Buu slightly overpowering SSJ3 Goku in the original story to Kid Buu slightly overpowering Both Goku and Vegeta in the rewrite. Two things though. 1) I don't think Vegeta makes the speech in this because since they are both officially the same in power level, he still has a chance to surpass him. (Difference being Goku likes fighting more while Vegeta is more strategic.) 2) Are you making the Gotenks fusion of SSJ2 as strong as 3 or weaker? If it's as strong, then nothing is needed, if it isnt, I don't think Ultimate Gohan struggles as much with Super Buu (Gotenks absorbed) as he did in the original story. Nice rewrite though. My change for the Buu arc? What if Goku got to save Gohan and Gotenks before the planet exploded? Have all 5 Sayians there to fight Kid Buu. I would have loved to see that.

I know you said it is regardless of our opinions. But i feel like the GS kai being added to buu made him weaker. The kai gave buu his pure heart, which turned him essentially into a child. That alone heavily dampened the unadulterated malice that the majin was formed from, sure. And i think that's why its assumed here that they'd be the same strength, cause any unruly kid buu shit would make up for the gain in power/tech from the kais that he got from absorbing them(keeping in mind fat buus innocent nature). However, i think that both the kais he absorbed played a part in actively supressing buus power as well. When he absorbs the brute that is the South kai, he gained a slighly functioning brain, and when he absorbs the GS Kai he gained the ability to feel emotions other then his pure nature of evil. He also demonstrates when he splits into the good and evil buu, that his true self (assuming the evil buu is just his natral state manifest with lile 50/50 strength) prefers to have the less moral mind in charge, but still require absorbing good buu to get to "full strength". Almost getting to the point; the kais were not in there that we saw, and even so, fat buu was a seperare entity inside of himself. And when he is removed both kais are removed. These are both high ranking, creation gods. Inherently they are good (shut up shut up shut up shut up ♡) and their personalities do actively guide buu. Unlike buuhan, buutenks, and buuccilo?,where their personalities only dominate when they are the active source (cocky buutenks, smart buuccilo???, and rage filled buuhan), the kais are always influencing buu. Im sure with a more thoughtful brain like piccolo or gohan that buu would have no problem mercing Satan (if he wasn't busy), but super buu couldnt, fat buu couldnt, and kid buu only could when he removed fat buu. Which means (also proven by dbs manga) that the kais lie in Fat buu, and are permanently fused to that portion of buu. Which means there is always and portion of himself that limits himself, not only because the kais goodness weakens the power that Buus pure evil nature gives him (muddy water) but also if you think about it... im sure that the grand supreme kai was no mental slouch(is piccolo reallu that much smarther than him??), and almost definetly as a last effort, permently seals some of buus power away behind the face of a child that the GS kai definetly intended to be presented. The kais made him good, fused to part of him, ultimately reducing his max power (from watering down his evil), and purposfully making the new dominant personality that of an idiot. IMO, its only dumb luck that the kais were in there so long that they no longer were able to be temoved comw the buu saga. Otherwise id say kid buu would have over all way more strength by simply not having sacrificed a large chunck of himself to the antithesis of his strength.

My rewrite to buu saga SSJ2 Goku VS Majin Buu As goku fought majin buu it was obvious that buu is just too strong and so goku tries to find a way to distract buu until he thought about using the kaioken. He tried combining it during the other world but even in his dead body he still can't maintain it in ssj2. So goku eventually used kaioken and begins to take advantage on the figt however goku realised that his body is starting to strain and eventually stopped using kaioken so he has to focus on defense until trunks gets the dragon radar. Goku eventually use techniques on buu suck as solar flare which buu kept getting blind which made him angry however before things goes south trunks gets the dragon radar and goku stops the fight. Same as canon buu still kills babidi. SSJ2 Gotenks VS Super Buu Even with ssj2 gotenks is only equal to super buu and buu can last until the fusion rans out. Ultimate Gohan VS Super Buu Same as in canon Vegito VS Buuhan Since goku doesn't have ssj3 vegeta didn't hesitate to fuse after knowing bulma and trunks were dead but its still stayed the same in canon. SSJ2 Goku and SSJ2 Vegeta VS Kid Buu Goku anf Vegeta teames up to fight kid buu in theor last stand goku and vegeta formed their stromgest final kamehaneha and buu uses his vanishing ball and as buu is about to overpower them goku decided to use kaioken one last time as a last resort. However goku's body have out and instinctively deactivated kaioken since he is alive again as hopes seems lost suddenly gohan,gotenks and piccolo and the other Z fighters band together and fires all of their strongest attack to overpower kid buu and they did. Goku wished for buu to reincarnated as in canon. GT timeline Everything stayed the same since there is no ssj3 that makes ssj4 named as ssj3. Dragon Ball Super Timeline Nothing changes except the fact goku and the others masteres ssj2. But tbingstmay change when goku and vegeta gained ssjblue. During their training they were able to unlock a hypothetical ssjblue2

Honestly, if i keep SSJ3 here's a few options of how i would make it important: -Give Gohan the form instead of Goku -Introduce the form earlier or later -Give it to vegeta too -maybe replace it with kaioken -make it relevant again. - Give it a proper buildup.

I do kinda like the oozaru in the original transformation, which I suppose is why he loses his eyebrows & has a brow similar to the Great Ape. Maybe adding a tail or more ape aspects could have at least helped the design. To be honest i already thought kid buu was equal to fat buu, just a bit more crazy, cuz in the anime fat buu was just tanking all of a dead ssj3 goku's hits and still was smiling and fighting back similar to way kid buu was, the only reason ssj3 goku even lost the fight to kid buu was cuz the stamina drain of ssj3 he wasnt actually weaker than kid buu he even said he could've killed kid buu if he went ssj3 full on right in the beginning, just like he said with fat buu. So ssj3 wouldn't really make a difference in any regard and mystic gohan would just be wayyyy stronger than every1 else. If anything gohan or gotenks could've just dealt with buu single handedly

It’s been talked about & pretty much shown Goku saying he couldn’t have beaten Fat Buu because that form was unstable. It was just his confidence saying that. Gotenks SS3 was a tad bit better but Goku eventually makes use for it that’s why he used it against Beerus.

I agree the form as it is is useless, and was handled poorly in the buu saga, but I still like it. Especially after GT made the tail reduce the stamina drain from the form drastically. I feel like it fixed a lot of the forms issues, and it made sense since it was described as pulled every last drop of potential from the Saiyan body. I think it would've been perfect if the tail thing was applied and the form was mastered, as well as ssj2 like ssj was.

Carthu I respect your opinion. However even though I do like Super Saiyan 3 as it does felt like a true evolution to Super Saiyan 2. I like it how it can be useful in certain situations and to further evolve Super Saiyan 2. Personally my least favorite form that sucks in my opinion is Super Saiyan Grade 3 because of how slow and useless it is unless you are able to stack something like Kaioken to make it faster but like Goku said its a real drag of stamina. Anyway overall I respect your opinion on Super Saiyan 3. Even though I like it and some others do, not everyone likes everything. Also What IF Goku Showed Super Saiyan 3 from the start when he is fighting Majin Vegeta. I know that it would most like be the same as your what if Goku used Super Saiyan 3 against Majin Vegeta but I would like to see what Vegeta's reaction would be if instead of Goku Stopping at Super Saiyan 2 he continues and transforms into Super Saiyan 3.

Love the rewrite, the only thing I think would be different, would be Goku’s power at the beginning. Since he didn’t have SSJ 3 he would have trained more instead on wasting time on finding a new form and mastering it. So I think Goku would have been somewhat stronger in this SSJ 2 than the original.

well that's assuming if he ever trained for that purpose but what we saw in the filler was only a 2x stack, but we never saw a glimpse of it outside of filler so he definitely never trained with it in canon meaning he would most likely die trying to use it, especially if trying while in SS2

For balancing reasons, it should be extremely limited. To the point where he wouldn't be able to do consecutive bursts like he did in the Saiyan and Namek sagas without risking outright dropping dead from exhaustion immediately

the thing is, working with multipliers is... tough, to say the least. ssj is a 50x base multiplier and ssj2 is 100x base. a simple kaioken x2 is enough to evicerate anything with a 200x base multiplier, needless to say a x10 or x20 kaioken. so i guess we'll have to stick with "goku's body wouldnt handle the pressure" (even though it most likely would)

I actually really enjoyed that. Your reasoning behind why this continuity is more in line with the characters and the message the arc is relaying really made sense. When watching the cannon arc you really do have this lingering thought of "why didn't ssj3 Goku (or gotenks for that matter) kill buu instead of toying with him." and the only real reason is plot convenience. Allowing the fighting and story to move on why giving the fans Goku's next evolution of ssj cementing him as the strongest. imo the would've been way more of a compelling and exciting story to watch unfold due to the fact that no one person was ever really stronger than buu and just chose to "let the next generation take care of it". If Son Goku and Gotenks never would have achieved their Super Saiyan 3 forms, then Son Goku and Gotenks instead would have focused on powering up their Super Saiyan and Super Saiyan 2 forms as much as possible through mastering their Super Saiyan and Super Saiyan 2 forms to their highest possible point. Which would have meant that Son Goku and Gotenks would have been much stronger than their canon incarnations, as Son Goku would have used his very own even further mastered form of Super Saiyan to have confronted and defeated Majin Yakon with absolutely no issue at all. Son Goku in his Full Power Super Saiyan form would have intimidated Majin Vegeta enough to have forced Majin Vegeta to have gone all-out as a Super Saiyan 2, but Full Power Super Saiyan Son Goku would have been able to defeat Super Saiyan 2 Majin Vegeta after such a long and hard fought battle that would have been much more intense than the very exact same one that Super Saiyan 2 Son Goku and Super Saiyan 2 Majin Vegeta would have had in the canon timeline. But Son Goku would have needed to use Full Power Super Saiyan 2 in order to have helped Super Saiyan 2 Son Gohan and Shin to defeat Majin Buu. With only a part of Majin Buu being able to survive and regenerate after most of his original self would have been destroyed by Full Power Super Saiyan 2 Son Goku. Which would have lead to the birth of a new incarnation of Majin Buu who would have been the result of only a very small remnant of the original Majin Buu's psyche surviving the destruction of most of the original Majin Buu's very own being. But only for this new form of Majin Buu to have met his end at the hands of Full Power Super Saiyan 2 Son Goku. Or by the hands of Full Power Super Saiyan 2 Gotenks, if Son Goku would have went out of his way like how he did in canon to have tried to have the younger generation be the ones who would take care of the threat to the Earth. But Son Goku would not only have kept Vegeta in line throughout the rest of the Majin Buu Saga, but Son Goku also would have stepped in if it had been necessary for him to do so, as Son Goku's Full Power Super Saiyan and Full Power Super Saiyan 2 forms would have been nowhere near as draining to him as an unmastered Super Saiyan 3 had been for him in the original canon because of Full Power Super Saiyan and Full Power Super Saiyan 2 would have drained little to no energy whatsoever out of Son Goku when Son Goku would have needed to access and maintain those said beyond mastered forms of Super Saiyan and Super Saiyan 2.

Gohan didn’t mess around because of a power drunken state, he had a moment to feel the faint presence of everyone inside buu, which is exactly why Super Vegito did not eradicate Buu in a second. Also with Kid Buu being = to Fat Buu, all they had to do was bring Gotenks and Gohan into the battle since either of them should be superior to Kid Buu

Therefore the whole spirit bomb thing was pointless because they could've just brought Gohan and Gotenks over like Goku suggested. Not to mention that Kid Buu was clearly not taking Goku seriously in that "equal" fight. There's also the fact that Kid Buu is hyped as the strongest foe in future materials when recapping the events of DBZ.

Since super saiyan blue in the manga can be perfected to not lose stamina drain by drawing in all the ki and not letting it out, could the same be applied to ssj3? Drawing in all the energy so none is wasted, powering up the form, however it could lead to terrible results if not properly focused.

11:19 actually it can be argued that because of the power input of ssj3 Goku attempting to defeat Buu in their first confrontation would've either led to Goku using all of his energy and being sent back to the afterlife, or his body wearing down which would lead to him depowering himself out of ssj3, so when you think about it no 1 man in the entire Arc truly had the chance to defeat Buu. Although this excuse probably wasn't intentional by Toriyama so any counter arguments are still reasonable

However I feel it's very obvious asj3 was not planned and was put in there seemingly randomly. Goku talks about how he's gonna go all put against vegeta but doesn't use ssj3 as it didn't exist, then when vegeta brings that up he makes a weak excuse saying he didn't wanna hurt vegeta's feelings which only makes Goku look bad on some Super level "I wanted to enjoy the fight and didn't care about the consequences" type vibes If ssj3 was gonna exist it would have had to be concieved of at the start and planned around, maybe goku goes ssj3 against vegeta but the sudden energy increase brings buu out earlier, idk. My biggest issue with the buu saga is honestly Gohan, between him being shafted and his ultimate (disappointment) form. Real tired of them making Gohan constantly stuck in his cell saga character of getting mad, and then getting drunk on his power. Did Goku's sacrifice teach him nothing? Seems the writers think so. Good rewrite, really makes Buu feel more of a threat since in cannon almost every notable fight he had he was either weaker than his opponent or on par with them

But what would be the real potential of the next generation, if Goku & Vegeta didn't come back? Gohan, Trunks, Goten, Videl, Uub, Good Buu... and maybe Bra, Pan & Marron but that would probably be pushing it & most of them wouldn't be anywhere strong enough to deal with the threats of Super unless you wanted to write it in ways where they would end up winning. Which isn't Carthu's style of writing at all. But still an interesting time line to think of.
