Imagine if sozin manage to kill aang and the next water and earth avatar then the fire avatar will live in sozin's or azulon's or ozai's age. If Sozin was the Avatar, the story would probably go as: Sozin starts his conquest, in between now and then he realizes his actions are evil(because he is the incarnation of the human spirit), he tries to convince his generals and admirals to go againts him plans but think he is dumb and betray him. Roku and Sozin try to take them down but are killed by his admiral. Aang is born, generals pitch a new fire lord who has no blood ties to the crown so they can conquer the world, they ahhinilate air temples to stop sozin's reincarnation but fail due to Aang fleeing.

The creators had a sort of "lost episode" that had aang talk to previous avatars in between the end of season 2 and the beginning of season 3 after he got shot by lightning. And avatar yangchen answers this question I believe. Correct me if I'm wrong but she says that morally the avatar can't be evil. No matter the person. And if you think about it Raava is the spirit of light and harmony. So why would a spirit like that be in a evil human being. Doesn't make sense

The fire nation only attacked because their biggest threat was Avatar Roku, and with his death, they had no threat to their world dominance. It took twelve years for the council of Airbenders to then tell Aang that they saw a storm on the horizon caused by the Fire Nation. They even informed him earlier than they normally do that they knew he was the Avatar.

i would’ve loved to see Vatu actually take over Unaloq and he’d end up as the dark avatar With every reincarnation there would be not only an avatar but a dark one as well. They’d be born, live, die and reincarnate at the same time. During their lifetime they’d spread darkness (Vatu) and peace (Raava) for the slower people who still don’t get it, the light and dark avatar would literally represent “balance”, yin and yang, light and dark, black and white. They’d be fighting an eternal battle between each other (VERY similar to raava fighting vatu before Wan came along)

I gotta point something out. When you said "Only this technique would be use to cause great pain a generation later as Amon and the equalist attempted to remove bending permanently, the same technique is framed as something horrific and violent" which is incorrect because Amon uses Blood bending to sever chi points in a benders body, it blocks bending, it doesn't take it away. Aang never used Blood bending, he used Energy bending to permanently remove Ozai's Fire bending. Blocking and taking away someone's bending isn't the same thing. Also, Azula could never be the avatar, the avatars entire purpose is to keep balance. Somehow I don't think Raava would sit back and just let one of Wans reincarnations do the opposite of what Wan himself swore to do (bringing and keeping balance to the world) If there's any possibility of Azula being an Avatar in any universe, it would be A dark Avatar through Vaatu, like Unalaq.

I had a few theories to go up against yours, in regards to Azula and how an alternate timeline would go, but I guess in the end I don't think this would happen since her nation wouldn't be next for the Avatar cycle. Even if Aang lives or dies, the next Bender would be a Water-Bender, so unless Fire Lord Sozin also wipes out the Water Nation, there wouldn't be a way for Azula to be Avatar. Plus, who knows where the cycle might be by the time Kovira is born.

Technically, the Avatar always fights for the side he considers 'good' and effectively prevents 'change' by shaping the world in his image. Like when elderly say 'in my days, it was great', the Avatar has the authority to maintain 'his' days. Exhibit 'Tenzin': Aang was so focused on keeping his culture alive that he didn't consider his other children to be part of his 'Air Nation'. Although he's a character who doesn't have racism, he hypocritically doesn't even consider his 'Air Acolytes' as 'Air Nation' because they aren't 'airbenders'. My thoughts on the ATLA finale: Exhibit 'Ozai': Ozai was a 'warrior' at heart and a warrior's greatest and final honor is to 'die in battle'. That's technically how Agni Kai's worked during the Hundred Year War. Although it makes no sense, Aang suddenly has a problem in killing people who he knows have names and faces. Apparently, nameless soldiers who were fighting for a false cause were 'okay to kill', but when it came to the evil Ozai 'I don't wanna kill'. Aang basically granted him a fate worse than death. I actually pity Ozai because no one wants to have his 'special talents' stripped from them. Aang learns to understand this in the comics but still strips benders like 'Yakone' of his bending later. It kinda makes me wonder if he did the same thing throughout his life to other 'special benders' to maintain his 'version' of 'peace'.
