I think Roman would've been the only one killed, drivers head used to be placed way lower before the halo was introduced, the cockpit was also taller and the air intake on top has a roll bar integrated within in. The halo allowed drivers to sit slightly higher and have better visibility without sacrificing safety.

it doesn't block the driver's vision. since your eyes operate independent of each other, there's actually a blind spot where the field of vision from both of your eyes intersect (best demonstrated by closing one eye and then the other) this blind spot happens to be right where the halo is located, so when they're driving, they can't actually see it.

Watching that roll bar crumple and get ripped off like cardboard during Zhou's crash was terrifying and illustrates quite well what kind of force impacts the drivers and cars during accidents like that.
