Like all neighboring countries? However most needed up with one swallow the other. We have now understood it’s better to cooperate with siblings than fighting. At the time it was kings fighting for their power, the people found it really hard to kill their siblings just because some kings told them so. Maybe that’s why we have the strongest democracy in the world now, never again forced to kill our friends.

I would be in favour of a unification of the Nordic countries. I think we should go for the South African solution for capitals though, having multiple capital cities. I also think language-wise the best solution would be to just keep the current system largely, since pretty much everyone learns a continental North Germanic language in school already. We'd just have to get better at teaching some of the other ones to increase mutual intelligibility, more exposure. Perhaps those of us speaking a continental North Germanic language natively should learn at least some Finnish as well. In the end though there are several hurdles to overcome before this would ever happen, many of them economical. For Norway joining the EU for example is not really an option due to fishing and especially agriculture. It's so difficult and expensive to farm in Norway that it requires considerable government subsidies, so in a union for a "fair" market that would all be gone.

Our cultures are more different than people from the outside see, after we have been at war with each other for more than a thousand years, we have found a model that works, good borders and lots of cooperation, but each our country and culture, everything else creates chaos, we don't want more wars, siblings don't live together as adults. @falukropp2000

I live in Sweden. A nordic union is an interesting thought that I think have been lingering in the back of people's minds for a long time. If a serious proposition came to the table, I believe most swedes at least would say 'YES!' without any second thoughts or need to elaborations. Then, it would take decades to work out the details... The Kalmar union were no happy family but a necessity to counteract the german influence from the Deutsche Orden etc. It was more like a coup d' etat of three states by one royal family with connections to all three families going for the highest prize when chance and skilled politics gave the opportunity. After Sweden leaving, the remnants of the union still existed all the way to the days of Napoleon where Denmark kept it's stranglehold of Norway until it was decided by the powers to be in compensation to Sweden for the loss of the eastern part, now known as Finland, to the Russians which was initiated by Napoleon. The nordic countries today is partly a consequence of the Napoleon wars, which cause some of the tensions still existing between the countries as well. However, I believe we feel more in common with the other nordics than with the mainland europe all in all, and this becomes more evident the farther north you go. This is why a nordic union would be an alternative. However I doubt we are prepared to create a state out of that union at this moment, like the USA. A trade, defence, maybe a foreign politics union could be an option but I think we would like to keep some of our differences to avoid tension between our differences. A common nordic language? Sure, over time it would be a great benefit to us. Finland may beg to differ perhaps but they learn swedish at school and hate it, maybe they would embrace a 'nordic' language differently (as swedish is a bit controversial since the events of 1814). When would such a nordic union become a threat? I'm sure we would at least consider to involve the Baltics and then Russia would go totally bananas of course. Engaging the Baltics would eliminate the possibility of the 20th century attitude to wards Russia where the nordics are reluctantly but still open towards the Russian neighbour. We can't really do this passing by the Baltics but if they are on this train with us, the geopolitics change, the nordic situation will not be the same, the prerequisites changes dramatically. The Nordic council is already a kind of hazy, half-assed union in itself, we have certain benefits reserved within that nordic treaty already, the question is what we would gain or risk out of a deeper collaboration, and that might not be quite as obvious. I think it all comes down to if we as peoples of those countries would be attracted to the idea of a nordic empire or not. This is not far from the once Swedish dream of the Baltic as a Swedish inland sea during the 17th century. You could compare it to the mid-20th century idea Germany brought forth and how it comes to fruition within EU today. I doubt the other nordics would let that pass their eyesight. It certainly wouldn't pass by unnoticed by the leaders in Stockholm I'm sure, whatever they'll say about that. They would go to sleep with a boner just thinking about it even though it's out of line with the present official agenda.

@falukropp2000
@falukropp2000 2 жыл бұрын
@@torbjrnhansen8521 It's getting closer already by the NATO applications by Sweden and Finland. From their point of view, they might have to react. I believe Sweden and Finland forgot the thin line they've walked for a long time, to their own benefit and to the opportunity to a peaceful relation with Russia. Sweden already had the nuclear retaliation guarantee from USA in exchange for ending it's own nuke program, NATO can't bring anything more, so there's other reasons than defence to the present NATO application. Finland is different, they have no secret deals, they live in the reality and needs trustworthy allies, instead of Sweden as their closest partner.

I see a new Kalmar Union being more of a Treaty organisation similar to Nato or EU, but able to prioritize Nordic ideals and progress. At most being similar to United States. With Turkey denying swedish entrance to NATO, having a Baltic/North Sea alliance localized to the Nordic regions, as well as loosely uniting their military (especially navy), they can ensure theyre own security and trade better than current disposition. One thing to note is if a Nordic Union formed, the Russian Baltic fleet would be completely outmatched. Currently it's capable of easily taking on any one or two of the Scandinavian countries in the Baltic. But united Russia doesn't stand a chance. Furthermore, I could see them acting as a single political entity in regards to foreign and military affairs, with combined army, Navy, and Air Force, but work completely independently in regard to domestic policy and governance. This would separate their reliance almost completely on larger, slower, more bureaucratic organisations like EU and NATO, able to react to shifts in economics and threats more readily.

Let me correct a big misconception. A new Kalmar Union will consist of a Union of sovereign countries, where the most important thing will be trade. It will be called the Nordic Union. There will be several joint embassies where each country will be represented, this model exists in several countries already today. There will be a Nordic Song Competition that surpasses esc. Sports competitions and cultural activities. An expanded energy network and infrastructure. Countries such as the Baltic countries, Scotland, Ireland and the Netherlands will be included. And possibly also eventually New Zealand, Australia, Canada and Schleswig-Holstein.

Dream on, guys, the Kalmar Union eventually failed the first time, it’s not going to succeed the second time. We are happy as sibling nations, but one family all together in one house? Nah, it’s ain’t gonna happen. Besides, Greenland dreams about independence. Not about a closer Anschluss to the the other Nordic countries. As for potential oil wealth in Greenland….well, lots of talk, lots of speculation, and lots of exploration, but the fact remains that not one drop of oil has actually been found in Greenland. Furthermore, the Greenland government is very iffy about any kind of oil drilling or mining due to the obvious pollution problems of such activities that invariably will be a threat to our traditional way of life in Greenland which involves hunting and fishing.

No, never, not gonna happen; Nordic unity is off the table permanently 😆 Jokes aside, with all the work the Nordic Council has accomplished over the years, the Nordics are closer knit now than they ever were during the Kalmar Union years. Apart from imports/exports and trade, you can pretty much just pull up your stakes, and move wherever you want to a much greater degree than even the EU framework allows. Also, disappointed you didn't mention Faroese fish exports 😜 If you've ever eaten high-end (aqua culture) salmon, it's most likely Faroese 😊

We in the Nordics have had a military cooperation since a long time ago and Sweden and Finland have had an even closer relationship (was one of the reasons why we applied for NATO at the same time as we both join or not) then we in the Nordics have had many joint exercises over the years. Then we in Sweden have another name for the king who decided and it is Kristian Turran when you call him Kristion the Great. I saw that you will have elections soon and it might be interesting to hear your interpretation of the political parties you have in Denmark (I think it's confusing with your conservative party called Venstre as in Sweden we have the Vänsterpartiet (similar spelling to yours) which has its basis in the Communist Party) but it will not be a return to the time when no one wants to give up their right to determine their own country's path, but we have had cooperation since Sweden gave away Norway (they would vote to become part of Sweden again after 100 years but I can't find if it was even reached then it was clear who would win)

A union would propably be a union of nations, like a mini-EU where every state keeps it's name and institutions, rather than a US like one country. Then royal families and Eurovision would be no problem at all. And sports... well, the UK lets every country compete in football as themselves... So, if the EU and/or NATO would collapse, maybe a nordic union would emerge... but more like a federation and not like a nation.

The think is, I'm sure a union would not be possible now, there are to many minor differences that are major in terms of national differences, for a union to succeed if it was put together in an instance. But say we start out with cross border cooperation with energy and energy export, do the same with energy as we did originally with SAS, do that for some 30-40 years. Create a pan-Nordic military, that is manned with selected personnel from each Nordic country's military, and gets allocated parts, say 10-15%, of the defence budget of each nation, with an expressed intention of integrating a larger part the different countries military into this pan-Nordic Armed Forces. Do that for 30-40 years, perhaps 60-70 years. Then reopen our monetary project and link up the currencies, then wait some 30-40 years again. Next could be giving the Nordic Council a bit more political power on the international arena, and wait some 30-40 years again. Continue on such a path, and I'd say you would get a union after some 2-300 years. Or the EU could collapse, Trump or another of his ilk getting power in the USA and destroying NATO, with Russia back on its feet and starting annexing things not theirs again, and you may see a Nordic Union in less than 10 years.

Personally, I would have preferred that we continue with the former Kalmar Union (If possible) and continue with both the Danish and Swedish fronts, thus making sure that the Faroe Islands, Iceland, Greenland, Finland (with the Kola Peninsula and all of Karelia), and Estonia (Ingria as the eastern half of the country ) are member states of the Union while the United Kingdom of Scandinavia is the founder of the Kalmar Union.

Quite good video on the topic, but makes the same mistake as many others - it’s a Nordic _union_ not a Nordic country. The European Union is not a country. And the Nordic union already exists, called the Nordic council as you said. So the question would be what if the Nordic union would tighten the already existing union. In which areas? First obvious is a currency union, today there are five different currencies, but the Nordic Krona would be very beneficial for the region. It has been talks about this, last time in the early 90s before many Nordic countries chose EU instead. Secondly would be a deeper military cooperation, which is very easy now when all are members of Nato. Third could be standardization of infrastructure, it’s somewhat problematic to take train Copenhagen - Oslo - trondheim today. Forth could be more cooperation for self sustainability as a union, together we could be very self sustainable if we just cooperated towards that goal. Very good from a geopolitical view. Let’s start there and see what’s needed in 20 years. Cheers to the fantastic Nordic friends, you rock!

I think it wholey depends on how a new Kalmar union would be structured. Would it be like the US, or maybe more like the EU. We already have the beginnings with the nordic council. I think a lot of people would vote yes for the more EU style of union. A united states of scandinavia however would be a lot harder. Unlike the US each country here has a decent amount of history of being a soveriegn nation. The flag problem alone might mean that it couldn't happen. There is no way you are making the danes use a new flag instead of Dannebrog
@AreEia
@AreEia 2 жыл бұрын
This might be a specifically Norwegian thing, but we would NEVER entertain the idea of another union, as it would go against our deep rooted culture, and values(we already fought several wars about this very thing) and cherish our independence with a passion. A "Nordic Confederacy/League" is something we could likely entertain the idea of though. As in all the nordic nations would keep their own sovereignty, and have full autonomy of their own internal politics, but create even deeper trade/commerce ties and create a joint foreign policy and military. This would in essence just be a strengthening/boost of the already existing Nordic Council(Sweden would first have to make some serious changes first though, and exorcise their facination with Blarian multiculturalism). Considering our shared history, values and perspective I think that could possibly succeed, and strenghten all of us on the geo-political scene, but an actual Union is completely out of the question! We value our sovereignty and autonomy too much, and to paraphrase what someone wrote in a comment here: "Although we might be like siblings, we have lived apart for many years now, and adult siblings although they love eachother, would not enjoy living together under the same roof once more".

The solution must be: adopt the Icelandic flag, because it is the most beautiful, - the Danish energy policy because it is the most rational, - the Norwegian language "bokmål" because it is intelligible and sounds happy, - the Finnish constitution because it is the most democratic and well-balanced, and we'll add a ceremonial over-royal layer, with the Swedish "drottning" Victoria as a symbol of kinship-values.

The historic enmity between Denmark and Sweden had very deep reasons. Dannes will mention the annexing of Skåne, Halland and Blekinge, and the Swedish genocide of danes in those areas. Swedes might mention the bloodbath in Stockholm. Let's just say that no other two nations have had as many wars. Heroes from the wars against Sweden are still very much celebrated in Denmark. For instance, look up the guy on the matchboxes, Tordenskjold. Or Niels Juel, the guy with the statue at the most expensive address in the country, next to Holmens kirke. Throwing drunken Swedes into the Harbour at Nyhavn was a Copenhagen sport well into the 20th century. In the EU, Denmark always sides with Germany and Sweden always sides with a France. Not because we agree with those countries, but because of mutual hatred. So a new Nordic union could have Denmark. Our it could have Sweden. But there is no way it could have both. Me, I love Sweden. The only bad thing about it is the swedes.

@@RobeTrotting also, maybe find a translation of the Danish "royal song" that is played whenever a Dane wins at a sport event. It is all about the Danish -Swedish wars, and very, very graphic. The good thing about all this, however, is that it is in the past. The wars are in the past, the naval heroes are not exactly celebrated today, and the hatred is in the past for the majority that lives in the present. Even the Danish national anthem is in the past tense, descriptive of past events and not normative today. As a historian: Things change over time.

As fun as it is to have a brother, you don't want to live with your brother. It's good to have a house of your own. We more or less have the benefit of a union, with EU, EES and the Nordic council. And we can still tease each other and compeet. The football game btw Denmark and Sweden is the most important game in Denmark. The hockeygame btw Finland and Sweden is religion in Finland. And there is a bit of a rivalry between Norway and Sweden in crosscountry skiing. Why just Sweden in those games? Because Sweden behave as the big brother of Scandinavia. They got better out of WWII and got a boosted economy in 3-4 decades, but now basicly overruned by both Denmark and Norway. Probably Finland too. But they still think they are the big brother. Calling Stockholm "The capital of Scandinavia". Naahh, I don't think a full union into one country is the way to go further. That would give Sweden to many ideas. And the other countries will probably let Sweden sort out some of their problems themself. The organized gang violence. 50 homicides with firearms so far this year in Sweden. Maybe not much compared to St Luis och Chicago, but in the Nordic countries that is alot. The others don't want "Svenske tilstande".

I think it could happen - but after a model like the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, where England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales act as constituent countries, that can impose "state-wide" laws, and where the UK as a whole is a federation. In practice, that would probably be the Nordic Union of Kingdoms and Republics, that controls governmental topics like justice, foreign affairs, trade, defense and emergency management, where other topics are still a matter of state-wide politics. The issue with UK however is that England and the UK are not always that separable, which makes in particular Scotland unhappy with the union, but I think that a federation could embrace those differences.
