Wizards and Warriors starts a new animated alternative history documentary series focusing on the Mongol Invasion of Europe and asking What if the Mongols invaded Europe. In our scenario, Ogedei Khan doesn't die in 1241, which allows the Mongols to retain their unity and continue their incursions into Europe and Middle East. In 1245, the Mongols under the leadership of Batu Khan invade central Europe leading to the intense battles in medieval Bohemia. At the battle of Olomouc in 1246, the allied armies of the Holy Roman Empire attempted to stop the Mongol invasion ( • What if the Mongols At... ). The defeat here didn't stop the Mongols who were now full of wrath. And although the Europeans were now preparing a Crusade, this wrath will bring them to Bohemia and the siege of Prague will make things even worse. We at Kings and Generals hope that you will enjoy this video!

And also Vyšehrad is missing in the video. Which is little bit sad. Also the Prague of this era had a very specific fortification style. There were many forts, towers, gates and fortified courtyards connected by strip of walls or walled independently. Because Prague was effectively a multi-town aglometration and not a connected city.

Its a small detail but I liked that Raymond of Toulouse was alluded to in the scene where Louis IX send his letter. IMO Raymond VII was really one of the now almost forgotten giant of era. Almost completely disinherited by the Albigensian Crusade and Lateran Council as a teenager with no military experience one would have expected him to meekly accept the crumbs that were promised to him if he accepted the edict of a Papacy at its peak, which had been recognized by pretty much everyone else in the Latin World. Instead he rose the Languedoc in revolt, proving to be a gifted commander who outgeneraled none other then Simon de Montfort and only accepting his ultimate defeat after literal decades of campaigns and political intrigue, as well as the full might of Paris and the Vatican and mistakes by some of his key allies, to finally make him accept the doom of his house and the takeover of his lands by the Capetians. And even then, he got to rule over much of his ancestor's holding for his lifetime... Historically he died just before the Seventh Crusade, more or less a broken man, but I could see him more or less recover the energy of his youth in light of the events of his timeline, and be tasked by Louis with organizing not just his lands but the whole of the Languedoc to war (Louis would know he is taking a big risk here but when necessity must...), with considering the lenient terms the French King gave the English after Taillebourg, maybe even promises to revise the terms of past treaties between the Count of Toulouse and the King of France in the latter's favor after all is said and done... The old warrior who had thought that his time in the spotlight is over but whom, in fact, still has the perform perhaps its most impressive deeds against an enemy he didn't know the very existence of a few years before, the man who was such a fear some enemy of crusaders ending as career playing a key role in a massive crusade, would be a good narrative device IMO...

In term of something easy to get your hands in English I'd say the episodes of the History of the Crusades Podcast' season on the Albigensian Crusade after the Council of Lateran and Raymond's own death would give you a good outline of his career, if nothing else.

@@johnirby8847 Those reports were only really a thing for the First Crusade (against the recently urbanized and lightly armed Seljuks who were different from the more well equipped Fatimids or later Arab states like the Ayyubids) and we know archers proved effective in the later ones. Heck, they still were able to rack up a fair number of casualties even in the First Crusade (especially if you count the People's Crusade which still featured knights, just not to the very high proportion of the Prince's Crusade.) Besides, modern tests routinely show that anything short of plate armor (which would not be developed for another century+) is only moderately effective against arrows at best, particularly if you don't first block them with shields (which is not always possible.) Mail with thin padding as common in the Crusades would have okay protection against penetration but still do little to protect against the blunt impact, which adds up very quickly in more realistic scenarios. An unbiased analysis of these accounts simply does not support the idea of bows being ineffective against knights as a blanket statement.

Alluding to the Bible - not allegory. Metaphor - is not allegory. The specific thing Tolkien was talking about when he said he disliked allegory was something like Animal Farm, where everything is a reference to something else and the story is an exercise in decoding the author's network of references and without proper context is not all that interesting. Tolkien is saying, my work is about Frodo etc and the War of the Ring, not any other war and please stop writing me letters asking how to decipher my work into a story about the Great War or WW2.

Perhaps my biggest quibble with this series so far--regarding the European rulers--is how Frederick II is panning out. David Abulafia wrote extensively deconstruction Frederick's image as a prince somehow outside his time, rather he was very much a product of it. It is very difficult to imagine that Frederick II would not have been a major figure of any such crusade even with Innocent IV's hostility, much less that he would have been deposed before his final excommunication and the subsequent battle of Parma in 1248. It is only in these years that his imperial sway began to wither, witnessed by Henry Raspe's candidacy as anti-King of the Romans. He was on good terms with Louis IX who often supported Frederick over the Papacy. Also, Frederick was in a rather commanding position in Italy in the early 1240s. His imperial reach only waned in the later half of the decade. I think Frederick is being too easily discounted to fit the narrative, a bit shoe-horned even.

20:19 laughing in mamluk destroying the mongols in 5 battles in real life
@KingOfWinter

I feel like Daniel and most of the men defending would’ve known the Mongols where lying about sparing their lives if they surrender considering it should’ve been well known that after you kill an emissary they would completely destroy you. If you don’t mind what was the thought process behind having him and a few thousand men leave the castle/battlements when they were maybe not clearly winning but they weren’t losing by any means yet?
@perrytran9504
@perrytran9504 Жыл бұрын
I think them killing Daniel but sparing his men (although still enslaving them) was a reasonable interpretation of what would pan out. Daniel was the leader and would be held the most accountable, and while precedent would suggest the Mongols show no mercy to deserters it's reasonable they would be more pragmatic about them when things are not going as well. The video also addressed that when they were careful not to take actions that would encourage the same behavior in their other vassals. That said I agree it was somewhat too easy to remove that chunk of the garrison. But at the same time, soldiers have surrendered superior positions before for seemingly no reason besides low morale and surrender terms not being completely terrible. The most recent example I can think of is the Afghan government's collapse a couple years ago and their position was on paper much better than the defenders of Prague in this video.

You guys need to do what if Caesar wasn’t assassinated. Telling Plutarchs comparison to Alexander in conquering Parthia, Scythia, the Caucuses and Germania. Then home through Gaul. And I think firstly among other things he’s make Cisalpine Gaul part of Italy. Securing his Veteran’s support for future generations. But mainly what if he reacted differently to Decimus convincing him the morning of the Ides.

14:30 ....the herald announced to the defenders above: "Surrender, boy! Or you and your city shall suffer the same fate as Kyiv, Buda, and Vienna. For if you dare defy the will of the Great Khan and the unyielding will of heaven, then I promise you that each and every single man, woman, and child within these walls shall perish and their skulls shall be piled up into mountains outside its ruins!" Prince Vladislaus's face reddened with rage, and he yelled down at the Mongol host: "We do not recognise any authority save for that of my father the king and God above, certainly not the authority of your heathen horselord from the steppe. You barbarians may be proficient in the murder of women and children, but here you shall find no absolution, no victory, only the Lord's wrath!" And with that, a defiant shout rang across the battlements and towers of the Bohemian capital. Prague will not surrender. ----The account of an anonymous chronicler.

I am so hyped for the next episode. If the united European armies are defeated, there's nothing keeping the Mongols from the Low Countries, France, and Italy. I can't even begin to think what the world would like today without Belgian/Dutch trading ports, the University of Paris, or the Roman papacy?

What If the Saxons won at Hastings? What If the Crusades sucedded? What if someone else discovered America? What if Napoleon sucedded?

The fact that Louis XIV crusade was aimed at the Mongols and not Egypt has some interesting implications since it means not only does Shajar Al Dur never come to power after her husbands death, but it adds a great deal of stability to the at this point struggling Ayyubid empire of Egypt and Syria who spent the years following the crusade fighting after the sudden death of the sultan in the middle of a crusade which was only saved by Shajar, so this honestly may give the Ayyubids a few more decades of life instead of being overthrown by their Mamluk mercenaries like in our timeline.

Great video, but would had been impossible that Daniel to not know that his lands were devastated already. Nobody trusted the pesky mongols in these manners, most of people knew already how cunning and cruel they are, when Daniel switched sides, normally he would had knew, that his lands will be totally ravaged.

I have some exciting suggestions: 1) What if in 582, when Tiberius II died, and it is known he wanted to initially divide the Empire again between an Eastern and a Western half, the Emperor of the West, which would have included Africa, parts of Spain, and parts of Italy, including Rome, Sicily, etc, tried to reconquer Spain and Gaul and what if another Emperor subsequently in the East managed to hold out against the Arabs? What if that would be accompanied by another Reinassance? Second. What if Charlemagne's Empire of the West actually managed to conquer more, or to remain united?

A few alternative history "What Ifs" I'd love to see Wizards and Warriors make in the future: 1. What if Moltke restrained himself at Morhange and also did not send two corps east to Prussia? Could Germany have won World War 1 in 1914? 2. What if Nazi Germany invaded the Middle East instead of Russia in 1941? Could Hitler have won World War 2? 3. What if Special Order 191 was committed by Confederate officers to memory and was never lost? Could Robert E. Lee win the American Civil War? 4. What if Chiang Kai-shek had not contested Communist rule in Manchuria? Could China have partitioned into a Republic of China in Nanjing ("Free China") and a Chinese Democratic People's Republic in Changchun ("Red China")?
