Wizards and Warriors starts a new animated alternative history documentary series focusing on the Mongol Invasion of Europe and asking What if the Mongols invaded Europe. In our scenario, Ogedei Khan doesn't die in 1241, which allows the Mongols to retain their unity and continue their incursions into Europe and Middle East. In 1245, the Mongols under the leadership of Batu Khan invade central Europe leading to the intense battles in medieval Bohemia. At the battle of Olomouc in 1246, the allied armies of the Holy Roman Empire attempted to stop the Mongol invasion ( • What if the Mongols At... ). The defeat here didn't stop the Mongols who were now full of wrath. And although the Europeans were now preparing a Crusade, this wrath will bring them to Bohemia and the siege of Prague will make things even worse. We at Kings and Generals hope that you will enjoy this video!

Its a small detail but I liked that Raymond of Toulouse was alluded to in the scene where Louis IX send his letter. IMO Raymond VII was really one of the now almost forgotten giant of era. Almost completely disinherited by the Albigensian Crusade and Lateran Council as a teenager with no military experience one would have expected him to meekly accept the crumbs that were promised to him if he accepted the edict of a Papacy at its peak, which had been recognized by pretty much everyone else in the Latin World. Instead he rose the Languedoc in revolt, proving to be a gifted commander who outgeneraled none other then Simon de Montfort and only accepting his ultimate defeat after literal decades of campaigns and political intrigue, as well as the full might of Paris and the Vatican and mistakes by some of his key allies, to finally make him accept the doom of his house and the takeover of his lands by the Capetians. And even then, he got to rule over much of his ancestor's holding for his lifetime... Historically he died just before the Seventh Crusade, more or less a broken man, but I could see him more or less recover the energy of his youth in light of the events of his timeline, and be tasked by Louis with organizing not just his lands but the whole of the Languedoc to war (Louis would know he is taking a big risk here but when necessity must...), with considering the lenient terms the French King gave the English after Taillebourg, maybe even promises to revise the terms of past treaties between the Count of Toulouse and the King of France in the latter's favor after all is said and done... The old warrior who had thought that his time in the spotlight is over but whom, in fact, still has the perform perhaps its most impressive deeds against an enemy he didn't know the very existence of a few years before, the man who was such a fear some enemy of crusaders ending as career playing a key role in a massive crusade, would be a good narrative device IMO...

In term of something easy to get your hands in English I'd say the episodes of the History of the Crusades Podcast' season on the Albigensian Crusade after the Council of Lateran and Raymond's own death would give you a good outline of his career, if nothing else.

@@johnirby8847 Those reports were only really a thing for the First Crusade (against the recently urbanized and lightly armed Seljuks who were different from the more well equipped Fatimids or later Arab states like the Ayyubids) and we know archers proved effective in the later ones. Heck, they still were able to rack up a fair number of casualties even in the First Crusade (especially if you count the People's Crusade which still featured knights, just not to the very high proportion of the Prince's Crusade.) Besides, modern tests routinely show that anything short of plate armor (which would not be developed for another century+) is only moderately effective against arrows at best, particularly if you don't first block them with shields (which is not always possible.) Mail with thin padding as common in the Crusades would have okay protection against penetration but still do little to protect against the blunt impact, which adds up very quickly in more realistic scenarios. An unbiased analysis of these accounts simply does not support the idea of bows being ineffective against knights as a blanket statement.

I get the feeling the Mongols will catch wind of the new Holy Roman Emperor being elected and try to get Frederick on their side, "reinstating" him as a puppet ruler if they are victorious over the Crusaders. Its unlikely to work, but depending how the upcoming campaigns proceed Frederick either has to fight the Mongols to regain his lands after the Crusaders are defeated, or still fight the Crusaders after they win now that his lands are claimed by a new Holy Roman Emperor. Being the crafty politician he was, Frederick would probably at least avoid fighting either side as they enter the HRE until they wear each other down or give him a good enough offer to ally.

The specific thing Tolkien was talking about when he said he disliked allegory was something like Animal Farm, where everything is a reference to something else and the story is an exercise in decoding the author's network of references and without proper context is not all that interesting. I doubt that Fredrick the II would stand idly even at the height of the conflict between empire and the church. If anything, i can imagine a sicilian with a substantial saracen contingent, and italian-german army would join the crusaders to fight against the heathen. Perhaps joining forces against the mongols could mean the beginning of a reconciliation in the Hre. He was a diplomat, he spoke greek and arabic and negotiated the access to pilgrims to jerusalem with the fatimid caliph, without having to fight a single battle. However he was a staunch belier in imperial authorithy (and the supremacy of the empire over the church, which simply was the reason of the current civil war in the empire), and would react strongly against any outside attack against the subjects of the empire.

Heck, he and the other Christian Iberian rulers may needed to make peace with the current Sultan of Morocco to make sure there will be no invasions in their absence as well. This is an alternative history video, but the most utterly bizarre thing is that the cruelty committed by the Mongols in this alternate history still doesn’t compare to what they did in real life.

What I find fascinating about Mongol history is that there's no one major power that brought their downfall. There's no Visigoths to sack Karakorum, there's no Ottomans to occupy the capital. What if this wasnt the case?

@@jesuschrist9513 The final nail in the coffin for Rome and Byzantium for the most part is a major power, usually outsiders. And last time I checked, Mongols destroyed themselves. Its cuz militarily there wasnt anyone that could take down the empire. Ppl in the comments mad coping that europe somehow had some advantage, when in reality they wouldve fared the worst in eurasia had it been a 1v1 simulation of mongols vs a european kingdom. After Genghis Khan died, succession squables became common and a couple civil wars broke up the empire, hence you have the Yuan dynasty, Chagatai Khanate, Ilkhanate, etc. The only thing that could destroy the mongols were themselves

I'm so curious how the other parts of Europe (Iberia, British Isles, Scandinavia) will factor into this whole conflict. Can't wait for the next part of this series!
@Mirokuofnite
@Mirokuofnite Жыл бұрын
I wonder if the European alliances will hold? One thing I learned throughout history is Europeans will backstab or back out of a engagement leaving their allies to the wolves. Example is all the European conflicts with the Ottomans. So many times if the coalitions had their shit together and put aside their egos they could've won. But someone always bitches out and everyone gets wrecked. Hell even during the crusades this always happened.
@thfkmnIII

Realistically, europe can't fare any better than asia (smaller armies, less wealthy, smaller in size) with the sheer distance between mongolia and europe being their only advantage. Mongols were usually able to find ppl they could bribe in all their other campaigns, so squabbling petty kings wouldnt be a problem
@perrytran9504
@perrytran9504 Жыл бұрын
@@thfkmnIII The sheer distance is admittedly a big equalizing force as it's slower to reinforce the Mongol campaign. Even if mainland Europe falls there's essentially zero chance the Mongols could take the British Isles unless you count a big timeskip where they really are just the supervisors of an invasion headed by European vassals. But you are right the unity of the HRE especially is a weakness. People talk about the density of castles being enough of an obstacle to waste their time, but individually they would not be a big deterrent and that can plausibly get many to surrender without a fight. I don't think the average obscure lord is going to prefer throwing away his garrison's lives against a much bigger army when he can just surrender and continue life as normal. People were not nearly as collective in their thinking back then and this exact thing happened several times in other Medieval campaigns.

But we already know the outcome, as viewers (if we know of them beforehand of course). But this alternative history has yet to be told and therefore also yet to be heard. Making is incredibly refreshing. Please do keep up the great work!
