My guess is without nukes, WW3 could have started as early as the 1950’s. I doubt Operation Unthinkable would have happened immediately after WW2 ended, but I’d bet maybe the Korean War could have started it. Without nukes, MacCarthur may have opted for a regular bombing campaign of northern China which may have been approved, which likely would’ve sparked tensions with the USSR had it happened. Otherwise, the Berlin Blockade could’ve been another trigger, and if somehow that didn’t cause it, then possibly the Bay of Pigs Invasion.

I think it depends on when the war starts. If it's during the Stalin era or shortly after, the Soviets would be both too militarized for dissent and too zealous for a movement to think they're hypocrites. If it's during the Khruschev era, the Soviets are revisionist AF. Radical centrism does not a good pro-war movement make, and ideological inconsistency would invite much more likelihood of internal collapse. Afterall, look in our timeline? I seriously think the RF would just have to disable the West's wifi for less than a week and you would all be in barbaric, bloodthirsty anarchy. Anyway, clearly you have no concept of what a war with Russia entails. You could look at the millions of highly trained and equipped German soldiers who are now bonefields stretching from the Volga to Berlin. The Warsaw pact outpaced every single member of NATO's military, Resource spacecraft production, combined. They were always anticipating you gluttonous colonial freaks attempting a second extermination on Slavs. And they were proven right when the KGB uncovered Operation Unthinkable. They subsequently re-armed and organised the entire army stationed in Berlin and shipped over all their modern equipment for the combined military parade. This is where the West saw the monstrous ogre that was the IS-3, and subsequently decided war was not an option at the moment. Soviet doctrine antipated heavy usage of chemical, nuclear and biological weapons saturating the battlefield. Which is why the BMP and numerous other vehicles were modified to operate in an inhospitable chemical hell on earth with Soviet armour and infantry pouring into ruined European cities. It would have been so traumatizing for the west, i would be surprised if any of you would be able to even remember the old America or Europe.

2 years later… It’s March 10, 2022 3 weeks into the Russia invasion of Ukraine. Russia can’t supply it’s troops 40 miles from the Russian border. Sooner or later the big lumbering bear will most likely thrash Ukraine and ground it’s cites to something resembling Syria… but it’s poor logistics is absolutely staggering. Tanks running out of gas, troops running out of food. Of course they are burning thru their most inexperienced troops and oldest tanks… Ukraine wants the West to creat a no fly zone.. but if the West does, THAT will likely start WWW3. I have no doubt the west could defeat Russia but the fear is once Russia starts really loosing - Will Putin push the button? He is threatening it already. That will likely keep the West out of direct involvement in the Russia - Ukraine war. However what’s next? Does Putin go for the Baltic states next? Maybe he goes for Finland instead. Does the West come to Finland’s aid? … what a strange time to live in - just hope Putin doesn’t end the human race because of his ego.

I think you might have underestimated the soviet economy, You see, the term "seize the means of production" has become a meme, but the USSR was so focused on this, that instead of produce individual items, they produced machines to make more items, this made their economy bloated and inefficient in peacetime as they had too much machinery to produce low quality items than needed and not a smaller quantity of high quality items, but in wartime their economy was probably the best geared up in the world, as within a matter of weeks, they had so much production machinery that they could churn out huge quantities of low quality weapons (e.g, Kalashnikovs) which is why they could sustain huge losses of equipment, couple this with the government having absolute control, being able to fully dedicate the economy to war, and the fact that factories would stop intentionally underperforming to receive more resources (as they were producing for their lives). This makes, I would say the Soviet economy the most effective economy in the world, (although they would still most likely lose).
@jamier655514 жыл бұрын
How are they gonna fuel all that machinery, who will use the weapons and machinery? Etc. Production doesn't mean logistics will also follow it. It's why Germany mass producing like the allies in ww2 wouldnt work.

@gregoryerickson35755 жыл бұрын
Missiles would still develop and the space race would probably still go on, because there are still lots of military implications. For example, the USSR/US did develop weapons that were basically just giant objects dropped from space in the late '80s that would have been basically man made meteors. They were just as destructive as a small nuclear weapon could be, and could hit anywhere on the planet. So you'd see lots of stuff involving space travel, jets, super computers, faster missiles, and robotics like OTL, but based on putting objects in space rather than nukes.

When it comes to if it was the nukes or the Soviets that caused Japan to surrender, my university teacher made a good point: Japan knew that a Soviet attack on Manchuria was a possibility. They didn’t know that one bomb destroying an entire city was a possibility.
@mr.gigagod97368 ай бұрын
Its important to remember that Japan knew victory was impossible by this point, and was simply fighting for a negotiated surrender. The invasion of Manchuria was a possibility, but the Japanese still hoped that they could use the Soviet Union as an ally for diplomatic negotiations.

The problem with actually invading Alaska is this little thing called the bering strait. It would be nigh impossible to send that much materiel without risking naval interdiction. Russia never had enough naval capacity to even BEGIN to try and move enough stuff into Alaska to make any real headway. About the worst they could do is conventional bombing, which likely would have happened. However, even without nukes, you still have American aircraft being far superior to Russian bombers, and shooting them out of the sky in droves. You'd also have missile technology, even without nukes, and that would be more effective. So you'd see a shelling or maybe missiles fired on Alaska, but really it wouldn't even begin to open up the capability of invasion. It would have tied up some American manpower and materiel, but not enough to turn the tide.

6:08 I'm not convinced. The Reason everyone though the Soviets could just pull off something like this is because they have tank superiority. They have it because the US spent about a decade or so building up nukes without considering that tanks are useful in any kind of war that wouldn't annihilate the planet. The Soviets never stopped mass producing tanks (maybe vbecause they are so useful to keep your puppet states silent) they eventually had such an advantage in numbers that the US Industry couldn't catch up. Now if nukes didn't exist the US would have kept their focus on tanks and probably also sending them to europe. Now all these+the other Allied tanks could actually mean that the Soviets won't be able to take much Land,maybe not even all of Germany.

World War III would probably start at the latest 1951 with the Korean War. Liklier would probably be the Berlin Blockade/Airlift in 1949 escalating, or maybe a new crisis in 1947 spawning out of northwest Iran which the Soviets occupy but were instructed to retreat from and hesistantly did so in out timeline whereas in this one they may choose to resist Anglo-American pressure. The war, taking place in the late 40s or early 50s, would be more balanced. The Tito-Stalin split would be underway, but in light of the war, they'd temporarily realign themselves. The Soviets would easily steamroll into Greece, West Germany, and South Korea. The Soviets would go full force into the Low Countries, crossing the Rhine, and continuing into France until reaching the natural boundaries of the Pyrenees, Mediterranean coastline, and Swiss Alps. Spain may join NATO despite its fascism, just like Portugal, but the mountain range would prevent any activity on the part of the Allies. The Soviets may use their position in Finnmark and Denmark to invade Norway, thus forcing Sweden and Finland to cut trade with the Allies and be reliant on Moscow. The Communist Party of China would establish dominance over China and aid Ho Chi Minh's republic in North Vietnam. However, that'd be all of it. The Soviets would not advance into Turkey, other than taking some border regions and East Thrace to obtain a better defensive position. The Soviets would not invade Japan. The Soviets would not invade Great Britain. They wouldn't go any further. The Allies cannot launch an offensive across the Pyrenees from Spain, the Alps from Italy, the Black Sea from Turkey, or the East China Sea from Japan simply because of the superior defensive position of the Soviet Union and its Allies. It'd be a stalemate that could not be broken. The war would not end until they mutually decided to make peace and make the new balance of power the status quo. Maybe a President Robert A. Taft would be willing to do this.

Jokes about surrender monkeys aside, compare the equipment of the French and Brazilian armed forces in 1961. It's not hard to see how it would have unfolded with France calling on at least one of its aircraft carriers (probably the Arromanche), potentially the battleship Jean Bart, at least one cruiser, several relatively modern submarines, potentially 2 parachute divisions and Vautour bombers staged out of Martinique and at least a brigade of Marines. Even the Mirage III could be rushed into service a little earlier than July. I predict Brazil's cruiser would have been sunk, the Minas Gerais (which only had helicopters and two TBF Avengers!) kept well out of the way and a relatively short war of only a few months. Very similar to something that happened 31 years later. In fact the timing may have worked out brilliantly for France. An invasion or even the threat of an invasion could have seen de Gaulle move a huge number of Foreign Legion from Algeria to the Caribbean (Guiana, Martinique and Guadeloupe), completely avoiding the Algiers putsch! It might have caused concerns for the Dutch and British too. If French Guiana fell to Brazil unopposed, Suriname and British Guiana could have been next. In which case you see a Suez-style coalition with Dutch and British forces (even the Dutch had an aircraft carrier with jets at the time) and British jet bombers added to the mix. This doesn't end well for Brazil.
