Assalamualikum, If no hereafter isn't it similar to sleeping for eternity,? When we sleep we don't realize what's going on anymore. So it will not matter at all. If there is life after death there is also regret, realization, etc. and if there is no life after death we lose memories, realization and everything else. I don't know if this makes sense. Soul is eternal and by extension of this logic, soul has to be somewhere in the universe after the body dies, for as long as even millions of years. The ideas of the afterlife and the so-called judgement day fulfil at least three functions in islam and other religions: 1. to take or reduce the normal fear from death of the believers; 2. to keep up hope so that the believers will accept the hardship endured during life so that they will not rebel and not trying to change their fate by inappropriate actions on religious standards, 3. to keep the believers on course in religion and faith by promising paradise or/and threatening with hell.
