I love Hendrix but I don't think he would have continued making the type of music that made him so popular. He appeared to be moving in a more jazz fusion/funk direction and probably would have developed into something more like Parliament Funkadelic but with less broad appeal. I think he would probably have done a lot of stuff with Miles Davis, as they were planning on. In fact some of Miles Davis' stuff from the early to mid 70s actually sounds Hendrix-esque at times; he somehow managed to make the trumpet work in a 'psychedelic funk' context. Very interesting but definitely not the sort of thing that would have had broad appeal. I see Hendrix having a trajectory more like Cat Stevens, not in the sense that their music was at all similar but in the sense of kind of falling off the public radar due to having interests that don't lend themselves to broad appeal. That style of music that Hendrix excelled at was unfortunately going out of vogue around the time he died anyway and he was already moving beyond it. I think he would have essentially just faded out of the public spotlight, much as Sly And The Family Stone did.

I haven't watched this yet, but there has always been one musician that I always wondered "what could have been". Buddy Holly. He was amazingly innovative for a 50's musician. @chaddubois8164 Жыл бұрын
I agree and this is a great choice. Unlike most of the musicians at the time, he was writing his own songs. I feel like Buddy Holly is forgotten with how important he was. It was Buddy Holly and then the Beatles in terms of the progress of bands writing their own songs in my opinion. Great choice.
@metaldams78 Жыл бұрын
You know the crazy thing, though? In 1969, 32 was considered old for a rock star. Everybody else pre-Beatles was considered washed up, so who knows? Buddy was definitely ahead of his time songwriting wise and may have surpassed that, but he would also have to adjust to the summer of love. Maybe he’d be on the country charts? A lot of possibilities, we’ll sadly never know.
Would have followed a similar path to Chuck Berry, maybe?

He was a nice guy to chat to though he clearly liked his drink and at that point he'd been recording The Byron Band album "On The Rocks" which ultimately didn't have any real commercial success with a single from it "Every Inch Of The Way" released from it - and which Dave gave me a signed copy of on one lunchtime. Sid Barrett lived into the 2000's. I thought about Steve Clark of Def Leppard. They might've kept pumping out creative ultra catchy riffs and bonkers guitar orchestration (Viv rocks, don't get me wrong)

Steve is my #1 choice. Also, Randy Rhoads, Kurt Cobain, Hendrix, Bonham, Joplin, Morrison, Brian Jones, Chris Cornell, George Michael and Freddie Mercury. I also think Layne Staley and Scott Weiland had more to give the music world, despite the rough last years.

I think Elvis would have done what artists like Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett did, record duets albums with pop stars such as Lady Gaga, Bono, Adele, John Lennon, Paul McCartney and maybe do a permanent Las Vegas residency and by the way R.I.P to Tony Bennett. Regarding Cliff Burton, he was a big fan of R.E.M., Peter Gabriel, Yes, The Police, Thin Lizzy and Aerosmith and since he was a big influence on James and Lars and they looked up to him a lot. He could have convinced them to add elements of these bands to their sound.
@Jake-pw7rj Жыл бұрын
Elvis hated Las Vegas and did his last engagement in December, 1976. As for his musical path, he was definitely going in a more modern country direction as his last batch of albums were crossing over to the country charts. I do not think he would have wanted to do the duet thing. As a movie star, Elvis did not want to do another musical, which is why he turned down the co staring role in "A Star Is Born." Elvis desired to play a bad ass character in an action film, very similar to Charles Bronson in "Death Wish." He wanted to play a retired FBI agent in a film called, "Billy Easter." Elvis also had plans to do a world tour, but he had to clean up his act and dump Col Parker. I think the urban cowboy phase, the Stray Cats brief rockabilly revival would have inspired Elvis as would The Traveling Willbury's super group. The fact that fellow Sun recording acts like Roy Orbison and Johnny Cash had huge end of career comebacks, would have opened up endless possibilities for Elvis.

I actually think Jim Morrison was done with music. After barely moving in most of his last performances he ended up literally trying to destroy the stage at the last Doors concert. I think the others only managed to get him back for "L.A. Woman" because they let him do his hardcore blues thing. I don't know if he would've stayed in Paris forever, but I'm thinking he'd just write poetry and be a recluse from that point on.

I think joplin ends up going down a middle of the road path. Like light fm radio hits , or a carly simon kinda sound. But of course, eventually makes a roots record going blues again . Not sure if she trys to get some pop hits in the 80s. Its REALLY hard to think any of them wouldn't have tried. I hope hendrix would go like full acoustic during the 80s so its like at least one artist didnt do it lol

Agree with Martin about Zeppelin. 4 or 5 songs on POM solo is what I think their next couple albums would've sounded like. Did hear that Jimmy said he wanted to make a heavier record at the time of Bonzo's untimely death, but he was so messed up at that time and continued to digress physically through mid 80's with his addictions, so not sure he would've rebounded with heavier guitar-riff driven music.

Syd Barrett doesn't really belong in the discussion. He DIDN'T die... Not for a long long time after he checked out of reality and buggered off to live in isolation for the rest of his life. So we don't need to wonder what would have happened, we actually saw it happen...

1:03:55 David Bowie was 69 when he died; King Edward was 65. Is there no retirement in music? I mean, I cried like a baby when EVH died but not in a "what if?" manner. I'm quite surprised to hear both mentioned in this theme. I was happy to hear Randy Rhoads mentioned, as I was worried he would not be, and I was getting agitated.

Jimi Hendrix Many other greats, but I didn't count them if they were over 50 when they died (Chris Cornell, Eddie Van Halen, David Bowie, RJD, etc.). Some I didn't include because I felt they'd peaked years before their deaths (Elvis).

Very interesting speculation! You two truly deliver week after week, no weak discussions when you´re involved. Talking about Freddie Mercury we have to remember that he wouldn´t have written The Show Must Go On if he wouldn´t have been deadly sick. I think that Freddie would´ve moved more against classical singing if he had lived longer. Here in Finland the biggest what if - scenario is the death of Razzle. Would Hanoi Rocks have hit really big if Razzle hadn´t died. I think they would´ve.

Janis Joplin what if she lived throughout the 70s didn’t died from overdose, she was getting big coming off of Woodstock performance, hanging with Grateful Dead With if George Lowell of Little Feat was alive during the beginning of the 80s what would the sound of Little Feat would be at the start of the decade? Steve Clark of Def Leppard what if he was alive throughout the 90s definitely no slang album maybe they return to roots of their earlier sound?

I totally agree on Lef Zeppelin. Their next albums would've basically been just like Robert Plant's solo albums. Possibly in the 90s they would've got back to their roots like Clapton etc. I disagree on Nirvana, they were on the verge of breaking up at the time. He probably would've formed another low key band. Who know if Grohl would've even started Foo Fighters

So many good recommendations on the list but I always wonder how Karen Carpenter would have done had she not died at just 32 years old. With one of the greatest female voices, it would have been interesting if she took that voice in a new direction beyond the Carpenters. Maybe jazz? Maybe form her own band as the drummer and sing what she wanted to sing. No doubt collaboration albums would have been a possibility as well as residency in Vegas but but to see her experiment would have been nice

So I saw Humble Pie in the early 80s and they were opening up for Ted Nugent so there was a connection there. this was in Reno, Nevada, and after the gig we went to a rock club where my friends band was playing, and Steve, Maria and Humble Pie showed up and jammed. as far as the 80s, it was almost impossible to clean up and there was stuff going down that night, and I think Steve was still looking for a party.

Cobain's personality and addiction issues were challenges for sure, but to assume he would just disappear isn't fair, and doesn't factor in his passion for music. I think it's also way off to assume he would get into the stoner rock scene. He'd already done that, with the first album influenced by the Melvins, and never would have repeated himself. From what I heard about his admiration for R.E.M. and his friendship with Stipe, my prediction is they would have done a more mainstream album of melodic, folky, jangly pop, which they'd touched on with the Unplugged album and "All Apologies." It might have been really great, who knows. No one knows.

Terry Kath from Chicago is a big what-if. He was supposedly going to start a solo album the day he accidentally shot himself. I highly doubt he would’ve dealt with the David Foster produced material as he used different players than actual band members. Terry, I believe, would’ve been a force to be reckoned with as a solo artist. Wishful thinking, I guess.

I would like to think that John Lennon would have done a major world tour in early 1981, probably with Tony Levin on bass, possibly with Cheap Trick as an opening act (this was per some things I have read that producer Jack Douglas has said).
