Fun fact: the evacuation plan is revised periodically, consistently proving to be practically unviable. While theoretically it is supposed to work, such a drastic and sudden measure will meet a lot of resistance due to a surge in traffic and panic. People are not sufficiently trained to be ready to leave. While visiting Vesuvius, talking to a geologist on the site, I was told that right now a huge blockage has most likely formed on the top part of the main crater, and it’s still thickening. In an event of eruption, it’s quite probable that a side burst will happen instead of a vertical one, dramatically widening the red zone. Unfortunately, it’s almost impossible to predict in which direction the blow will be, turning the safety plan into a wish, more than a solution.

Honestly, as a person living on the volcano, we were basically raised and taught not to think about this. When I was 6-7 we regularly had lessons about the volcano. Then, this all disappeared and today's kids have no awareness of that the volcano may erupt. This is positive because we can live without being in constant anxiety, but it's negative because we live as the volcano didn't exist, at all 😅 Nobody ever talks about it.

That is a problem. Sure, thinking about it all the time would be causing too much anxiety. But it needs to be talked about, at least so that the evacuation plan is clear for everyone. You can't expect evacuation to work (if not completely, at least partially), if nobody is talking about it and now precisely what to do when it has to happen.

That's crazy talk!! That would be like someone here in the states (along with schools) not teaching kids about tornadoes. Especially those kids living in Tornado Alley! @@andyb1653 Campi Flegrei which is the Italian name for the second volcano mentioned in this video, has the power to produce a VEI-8 eruption just like Yellowstone does. We know the Caldera is still active thanks to the steam it produces on the ocean sometimes as well as the rise and fall of the ground that even the Romans were able to measure. We just know less about it than Yellowstone because a majority of the Caldera is in the sea.

As someone who has sought knowledge on the formation of magma chambers beneath the the crust, it is extremely unlikely that the same magma chamber that once powered the Vesuvius eruption many years ago, is still located beneath Vesuvius. See the Hawaiian islands as an example of the ever shifting magma chambers that are depositing magma to the surface in the form of a string of islands. However, given that Vesuvius is located close to a convergent tectonic plate boundary, is it possible that a new magma chamber could form in the area. Whether it's close enough to utilize the pre-existing vents in Vesuvius or not, is a very tough question indeed.

There is still a lot of underground activity around Vesuvius besides the volcano itself. There are several areas of hot springs and activity similar to Yellowstone, and several probably extinct volcanoes in the area. People have moved into these places and surrounded them to the point they could never get away in time. And you know people will try to save their belongings before running, not to mention all the museums trying to preserve their exhibits. If you want to learn about all the activity in the area, read Vesuvius, A Biography.

I mean, When they build cities around volcanos, they get unlimited energy for everything such as electricity. But they use (I forgot the name of the energy) but you don’t have to use greenhouse gases and shit, so it’s kind of smart energy wise, yet kind of dumb since you litterally are neighbours with a volcano.

I was stationed in the port of Naples when in the Navy. Vesuvius is massive and towers over everthing in the area. Last I heard, Vesuvius is a very gassy volcano whose throat is clogged with rocks. That's one of the reasons the initial blast will be incredibly destructive.
@AndisweatherCenter
@AndisweatherCenter 2 жыл бұрын
Actually, I went to the peak of Vesuvius and I am not concerned at all as presently the volcano is mostly comprised out of the salt and the last eruption that it had a 1944 irrupt it primarily basalt erupted. Also Vesuvius is not the only volcano in continental Europe, because just to the west of Naples there is an even more dangerous volcano that actually gave birth to Vesuvius. That volcano is called campi Flegrei. That volcano does not have the salt but andesite to railway composition which is extremely explosive. In the last 40,000 years that volcano has had two super eruptions. Vesuvius is basically share a magma chamber with the supervolcanic complex Campi Flegrei. If that volcano blows all Naples will be destroyed and the earth will have another period of global cooling. Keep in mind the most powerful irruption that Vesuvius ever had and it’s entire existence was a VEI-6 which is about the same size as Pinatubo. The previous two volcanic eruptions at camp Flegrei both 40,000 years ago in 14,000 years ago had a VEI of seven which is considered a super volcanic eruption. As both VEI seven and eight are supervolcanic strength eruptions.

See what I don't get about the whole "The land is fertile because of the volcano so let's build our cities on it" is that, wouldn't it be better to build the cities outside the red zone, and instead designate the lands within the red zone Farmlands? I mean, just imagine if there was a massive field of perfectly farmable land because of it's rich soil, but instead of building farms they build a city, leaving less room to make use of the fertile land.

There are a few highly densely populated areas in the world worth keeping your eye on aside from Vesuvius. There’s the great tectonic plate off the coast of the Pacific Northwest, If that goes, it’s tsunamis and possibly volcanoes in the Cascade mountains at the same time so it’s basically goodbye Washington, Oregon and Northern California.There’s also the super volcano underneath Yellowstone, while there’s not a lot of people, the red zone is practically 1/5 of the United States.

This happens a lot (if the volcano isn't sitting in the middle of a mountain range or so) because the vulcanic ash and other volcanic constituents of the soil are extremely fertile. Acqua Minerale Just being honest you can’t directly compare two volcanos with one historical eruptions. I’m thinking about a great eruption happened on Aug 29, 2019 on Stromboli is highly unusual for its previous eruption. Etna also has some infamous deeds. It really depends on types of intrusion magma coming from the mental, and it may change from time to time. Such as Krakatoa is doing some Stromboli type eruption from 1927 until 2019, and a sudden gigantic VEL 4 eruption creating tsunami destroyed the surrounding islands. By the way Mt. Vesuvius is standing on the base of Mt. Somma, which used to be 4 times as big as Mt. Vesuvius, was destroy after a ultra-Plinian type eruption. It was estimated an VEI-6, which Mt. Vesuvius may totally capable of doing it again!

@Ryan McRae painting with broad strokes is ignorant, bud. I’m American and know about plenty of volcanoes. Not all of us are idiots. I would accept that most do think Yellowstone is the baddest unfortunately not everyone isn’t interested in volcanoes which I’ll never understand 😂

It cracks me up that people are so terrified of climate change that poses no immediate dangers, and yet they'll completely ignore fatal catastrophes waiting to activate right outside their backyard. I lived in Portland Oregon and people are the same way: obsessed with climate change, and not a tad concerned about the possibility of 9.0+ magnitude earthquakes.
