If anything needs to be automated, it’s the construction of roadways! I feel that governments take advantage of the slow process that when the entire project is finally finished, it’s time to reconstruct the roadways because of all the damage they’ve endured before completion. It’s like road construction never stops on highways nowadays. We need better materials and a more streamlined process.

It seems counterintuitive but the countries with the highest levels of automation have the lowest levels of unemployment. Look at all the jobs lost in agriculture in the past 100 years as we moved towards machines doing the manual labor. In Madagascar 75% of the population works in agriculture while in Germany and the UK it's only 1% due to automation and yet unemployment is not a huge issue in these countries.

Transparency and truth build the basement of science and trust. Claiming automation wouldn't substitute jobs is ridiculous. Automation is gonna be inevitable on Moon or Mars. First successful totally automatised test projects were done in the 90th in Japan. However, do we really have to reduce the costs by making hundreds of millions of people jobless? New technology creates new jobs, is always said. But never forget the fact, the new jobs are high specialised jobs. You cannot retrain a construction worker to an ai-software engineer.

People keep talking about job losses automation would create, to be honest from an overview it would create more jobs as to run IT and update software, people will be needed more than ever before. Yes, the ageing labourer maybe affected, but not completely replaced. There will be scope for me - like building those robots, etc. Rather than stifling the technology and it's evolution, we humans should be a step ahead and upskill ourselves. Sadly our governments, institutions are far behind. There needs to be more 'education' on upskilling existing workforce, as their expertise is always going to be required. Those who out cry about job losses are just victims of their own expectations - evolution, biological or not, sadly is 'eliminatory' in nature. The slowest, dumbest, weakest is destined to lose. So to keep the human spirit of a survivor we better be a step ahead (least at par). The B1M thanks for bringing up a wonderful topic and sharing with with great content. I always appreciate your unbiased opinion and skill or creating fresh content on such similar topics.

Why can't robots build other robots? The problem with automation in our current society is that at some point automation will hit a point where it will lead to a reduction in the work force. This is one reason why topics such as universal basic income come up often. We currently work in order to live. We need money. We need a framework that will change that. Governments are generally conservative for a reason. Change is bad. I'm not saying change can't be good, its just we have done things for hundreds of years. It is "working".

Prefabbed stuff is still built with the disposable throwaway mentality - not even counting how many extra steps of plastics have to be involved in packaging and shipping with the extra steps. Plus, designers constantly fuck up, which would create huge progress issues later down in the pipeline. And don't even get me started on how bad the modular prefabbed homes are. It's just a race to the bottom - no more plaster art, no more amazing carpentry, no more personality. Just cold robotics. A throwaway building is worth throwing away.

Already yesterday I thought "isn't it time for a new B1M video"? :D Interesting aspect of future construction plans; I guess it's not just about the construction of buildings but also for example road construction. Some commercial truck manufacturers are already testing autonomous trucks for construction sites

I hope that there will be more architects in the future as the automation ease the amount of work needed going into the development and construction, presenting new opportunities for architects to go wilder with designs and making the city skyline vastly more interesting.

DT is the future. It automated processes, enhances data and digital asset quality, increase production and asset lifespan, reduce risks, enhances safety measures and pre-attendance RAMS generation. Automated compliance tasks, demostrates statutory compliance, forms basis of strategic decision maning, enables the handover of digital assets through future generations. Honestly, technology will innevitably improve and drive the construction’s sustainability, energy efficiency and help to reduce carbon footprint. It’s all about the quality data. If data is current, updated in real time and accurate- the entire process will run smoothly autonomously. The AI can soon power the modular construction

This is good. My biggest fest is that Autonomous robots will take over construction jobs which is the scariest thought to me. That’s why I’m happy they would take over job gaps that need filling. Thank you so much. Made my fears go away and strengthened the idea of robots and humans working together.

Since my grandfather bought his house construction technology has improved drastically. Yet a house like his costs five times what he bought it for counting inflation. Construction costs may fall but a tiny appartment will cost like a 1970s house built without tech tools for design, efficient tools, factory built modules etc.

I think it would be interesting to go into how plausible it is. In most buildings budget is the most important factor. Workers are usually cheaper than buying giga expensive automated machines. Not to mention having to pay robot handlers which require a higher education than regular workers. It would have to become way less expensive for it to be viable imo

I have some doupts here. Some parts will still need to be done on site. For exemple, I live in Canada and one of the things we have to contend with is winter. We plow our streets with the same equipment we use to construct them. My city tried using precast concrete street borders, but it turns out that they are way too light and easy to lift out of the ground. The plows and graders just rip them clean off and they end up who knows where in a snow pile, possibly causing problems for the snow blower that has to remove the snow once enough of it has piled up. Even when you add concrete behind them to steady them, they still move around. Poured in place borders use less concrete and actually stay where they are placed. Theses precast concrete street borders are junk.

The concept of automating construction to a large extent looks and sounds very promising. It would mean higher productivity, more precise and uniform quality product, replacement of labors in those tasks which involve difficult physical work, conduction labor tasks at dangerous locations for example at substantial height places and some more. With all that said, the fear of loss of jobs should also be addressed by the industry. Making sweet statements about how it won't affect the jobs of people is nice, but it should also happen in reality and not just remain a mere argument in favour of automation.

Some of this automation would scare me if I had one of the jobs they could replace. Companies may say they wouldn't replace current workers, but if they could pay 1/10th of a salary for one of these than a person. They would not hesitate to replace everyone and not everyone can just find a new job after that. At some point we are going to have to seriously look at what happens will a larger portion of people can't work simply because the labor jobs they had are no longer needed.
