Fraser Cain i have a number of theories, one being that these civilizations may not have the capability to travel vast distances yet. Or if they are technologically superior they chose not to interact with an inferior race such as ourselves as we are deemed too primitive.
@Jordan-Ramses
@Jordan-Ramses 6 жыл бұрын
If you want to argue for advanced alien civilizations the most rational argument is that space is just too big and there is no way to reach another civilization. If light is the speed limit of the Universe that seems pretty reasonable. That there is no point in attempting to communicate. By the time you detected an alien civilization they would already be extinct. Otherwise then yes, where the hell are they?

For me, the aliens would be Capitalists and/or libertarians, and therefore, they would not have any problem with blunts - Only Capitalist civilisation, with free market, can create technology to reach our planet. I know it might be a little bit Anthropocentric thinking, but We can predict, how this situation would look like on the alien planet, when we look at our civilization. Look at the comments of the so Called SJWs, Environomentalists and the entire regressive left - I don't talk about politics, but about their thinking - Those group think in terms of „Present Day", not „The future". They think that „Space travel" make no sense at all, and that we „should rescue our planet" and other idealistic, unrealistic things. Maybe this same thing happens on alien planet - Some part of alien society is like „No, we shouldn't flight towards this earth, we shouldn't think about far future, we should Rescue, Idk, Trappist-1 from global warming XDD". The part of society that we, as humans, will meet in person, would be that group of aliens that entered the spaceship, and to say goodbye, they unconsciously quoted Kurt Russel and said to the delusional group of aliens „Yeah, f*ck you too"

When it comes to alien life, we need to step back from our human-centric, even earth-centric biases. The very act of communication evolved because our existence favored cooperative, communal behavior. If an alien species evolved to favor individuals, they may not communicate! We must treat an alien species as a thing to be understood before projecting meaning and purpose on it from our human point of view.
@frasercain
@frasercain 8 жыл бұрын
I'm sure communicating with them will be an enormous challenge.
@GodWorksOut
@GodWorksOut 7 жыл бұрын
Fraser Cain it probably won't be much of a problem at all. Given that we crack ancient languages with only a few hundred or thousand words, an alien civilization sophisticated enough to be capable of communication, should be relatively easy to communicate with, especially since we have pumped millions of hours of recordings of our languages and society into space (this is assuming they have too and we have access to it). With that much data available, and all the motivated excitement, we'd be chatting with them in no time.

@GodWorksOut
@GodWorksOut 7 жыл бұрын
My first thought is to think this would really challenge people's perspectives, like religion, but then I realized unless they were really close and we were communicating with them regularly, people would just find a way to rationalize it away. It would probably take some time, maybe a whole new generation of young, bright thinkers to really embrace the reality and start thinking science-based, futuristic thoughts.

Could you do a video on why it's quite probable we are the first sapient, space fairing race in the observable universe? Because while prokaryotic life seems to have come into being the moment it was able to, the jump from prokaryotic life to eukaryotic life took billions of years. Then the jump from prokaryotic life to multicellular life took another billion or so. After that, it seems to be a semi-random, but steady, progression to sentience and to increasingly intelligent beings. However, then it took hundreds of millions of years for us to exist. But even then, humans have the exact combination of language skills, cognition, body plan, lifespan, social structures, passing down knowledge, ect to eventually give rise to civilization. That's pure chance, as natural selection literally cannot select fitness for space-faring races. It just comes to chance that our tribal fitness was just barely good enough to be able to build rockets with enough generations of passed down knowledge. And the final nail in the coffin: the Milky Way is not teaming with self-replicating machines. At the very least, we should see von-Neumann probes literally everywhere. But we do not.

I feel like that's the case I've been making across all my alien-related videos. :-)
@UrbanPanic

Another issue that pushes back the timeline of technological space faring races is that the home planet has to be built on at least a third generation star. A first generation star begins as pretty much just hydrogen and helium, fusing together heavier elements until it dies as a supernova in which iron is the heaviest element it will create. This material would then recondense into a new star, and the iron can then undergo neutron capture and subsequent beta decay to become heavier. Small amounts of this may happen during the initial first generation supernova, but in order to make an appreciable amount of the transferric elements the iron really needs to sit in the star for a long time. This material would then disperse in the second generation's supernova, eventually gathering in the protoplanetary disk around a third generation star such as our sun. Without these heavier materials many of the technologies that our society relies on may be simply impossible: no microprocessors without rare earth elements, no electronics at all without copper, no bronze age without tin, no plumbing without lead, probably not nearly enough commerce without silver or gold, and so on and so on. This is even assuming that life would be possible without certain trace minerals, such as iodine, selenium, and zinc. And then there is a good chance that we wouldn't have gotten to our current technological level without the energy afforded by fossil fuels, so once evolution gets a later start., there need to be vast periods where organisms make far more energy than they use, and this energy is stored away in some form that is useable by a technological organism. Without ancient forests becoming coal and ancient algae storing extra oils, we probably wouldn't be launching into space. The to the question "why can't we find other galaxy spanning civilizations" may be that the universe is just now old enough for them to arise.
@cortster12
@cortster12 8 жыл бұрын
Benjamin Shaw Exactly. I would have gone into that point as well, but it would have taken up too much space.
@GodWorksOut

Bose-Einstein what if we are the exception and our evolution took too long? The universe is nearly 14 billion years old... we are late to the scene. Just think how advanced we could be or how extinct ( I believe that's the kicker) we would be, if we existed then instead of the dinosaurs.
@cortster12
@cortster12 7 жыл бұрын
+GodWorksOut A shame we'll never know. All we have now is what we see, and what we see is that it took a long time for us to evolve sapience. We can speculate on "what ifs" all we want but, in the end, it took billions of years for us to come about. And since we don't see any evidence of any other sapience life (as anything that lasted longer than a few hundred thousand years would make its mark on the galaxy), the likelihood that we are alone is high.

Hey because of the large distances between habitable planets, the energy and tech required for those distances, do you think anything being able to travel that would need anything from us? Id feel they'd only be traveling for curiosity sake,.. I do not see what they would want or need. Its almost as if the large distances required to make is a natural defense. only super smart civilizations with abundance of energy and tech can make the trips and wouldnt need to enslave or attack others. Biological life would make crappy fragile slaves compared to the robots they probably could make. and theres no scarcity of resources and energy if they could make the trip. And if we are boring to them and they are only traveling for energy and resources, they would probably mostly go to stars with planets that are dead to harvest.

Umm maybe we are aliens? Maybe life here came from somewhere else. But on real notes any “massive threat” to us would already know we are here and if they need to find a single from us they likely aren’t a threat. Bc they aren’t advanced enough. Getting some kinda ship here would take years at the speed of light and if they can’t hit 10% speed of light it would be optimistic to say the ones who left would even be the ones who get here and are we that important? To send ppl who won’t live long enough to get here? The closer star is 4.7 light years away then moving to 8 light years and so on so. So 10% the speed of light would take 47 or 80+ years and likely much longer and if light speed they can hit they already very aware of us and so much more. Also what do we matter to them unless they think of us as a threat? Unless they want to study what makes us us but that’s another whole argument.

Okay random question.....I know in a previous episode, Fraser mentioned that the discovery of gravitational waves could be helpful in our understanding of the inner-structure of a black hole. Has there been any data connecting gravitational waves to black hole structures inside the event horizon thus far since their confirmed discovery? That was just the first time I had heard of that specific possible connection.

The point is not about finding aliens. There are already non-human beings on Earth that have intelligence which may rival or even exceed the most intelligent humans, but they just don't have technology. The point is finding intelligent AND technologically advanced aliens. If you just want to have an conversation with an intelligent being which is non-human, there are Dolphins and Whales on this planet We are trying to communicate with Dolphins and some impressive progress is being made. Imagine in the near future that we are able to have conversations with Dolphins, and we can teach them about the planet they live on. Should we teach them our history? What would those dolphins think of humans when they see and comprehend what some humans have done to their species? What would an intelligent, technologically advanced think?

No one ever discusses about the possibility of humans being the ”Genesis” species. What I mean by Genesis species is, being the first intelligent life form that’ll colonize space. After thousands and even millions of years, our offspring on other planets would look completely different but have all some similar “human” qualities and traits. Why don’t scientists ever discuss that as a possibility?

What if humanity is the only intelligent life in the galaxy? There are billions of species on earth and only one is sentient. What if there are trees and plants and sometimes animals. That is it? What if there are an infinite number of universes beyond ours? So distant that the odds of receiving even a photon of light from them are nearly zero. What if the closest Universe to ours is so many light-years away that it would require new notation to express it? Bigger than any other number we've ever imagined? What if matter is made up of infinitely small pieces going all the way down. That electrons are made up of smaller pieces that are made up of smaller pieces that are made up of smaller pieces etc etc to infinity. What if the amount of 'solid' matter in this universe and an infinite number of them is effectively zero?

it's not a question of should we go into space it's a question of are we ready as a race? except for a narrow range of population, the rest of us are pretty stupid and have a sheep like mantality, so untill we find a new way of existing, ranging from racism, conduct, technology on a global scale, we deserve to stay right where we are. imagine a scenario where a ruthless leader such as hitler found his way to an inhabitable planet and perpetuate his regime than later posing a security risk for earth. there is a reason why evolution works the way it does.

Finding any kind of life on another planet or moon would put a serious dent in the Abrahamic religions. This would shake many people's faith and hopefully allow them to begin to take off their "God glasses." I believe that the number of non religious and humanitarians would increase which would very good for humanity and the scientific community.

Sci-Fi would get very strange if we know there is an alien race or say a dyson swarm but we have no other idea what's there. Suddenly every Sci-Fi will have to explain who those aliens are. Star Trek would have a version, Dune would have a version, Warhammer 40k would have a version, etc.

How humans would react would be related to proximity to Earth. If aliens are on a distant planet we'd all be like, "Hey neighbors! How ya doin'?". If we first see them within our solar system we'd freak and immediately declare war.

I might be giving humanity a bit too much the benefit of the doubt, but even then i don`t think we`d declare war. If they have the tech to travel all the way here, they could quite literally blow up our ENTIRE planet without us even noticing and those guys in the government know that too (....i think... hope?).

Off topic for this video: Astronomers use Type 1a Supernovae to calculate large distances and we can see them from across the universe. These explosions require a binary star system.
