Justina Miles discusses the challenges faced by the Deaf community due to language deprivation. Miles advocates for the importance of American Sign Language (ASL) in cognitive development and social inclusion, calling for greater acceptance and integration of Deaf culture.
Introduction: Alberto Medero, ASL Artist Justina Miles is a Deaf performer, who went viral during her performance at Super Bowl LVII. She is the first person to perform the ASL rendition of The Black National Anthem at the Super Bowl and the first Deaf woman to perform ASL for the Halftime Show. Justina has shared her story across prominent media outlets such as ELLE, CBS This Morning, The View, and British Vogue, where she graced the May 2023 cover. She has performed at numerous musical and cultural events, such as CNN's Juneteenth Concert, Broccoli City Fest, Dreamville Festival and more. Justina was also a Deaflympics track athlete, representing Team USA and taking home a silver medal at the 2021 Summer Deaflympics. Justina’s mission is to show the world more authentic representations of Deaf people, and her long-term goal is to open her own nursing practice at Gallaudet University, a specialist school for the Deaf and hard of hearing, so that there can be more Deaf nurses. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

It would be great if TED would not show the presenters using ASL at side angles. It’s hard to understand(especially the finger spelling!) the signs from the side.😕

"they did not know how to measure the quality of thought of deaf people if they did not know how to speak"... that!! exactly that!! What a pity the video goes off exactly on that bit.

Now can we teach the camera people that we need to see the person seaking from the front? Signing involves more than the hands. Posture and facial expressions add necessary context, just as in spoken language the cadence, tone, and inflection changes to add necessary context.

could you import slide video's captions? not all of us are american, or know asl, but we'd still like to see the person presenting. and captions can help with reception, if you're not fluent tip for future talks. i like the big presenter, but maybe integrate slides or other materials into the upper corners, reverse picture in picture. and bit more zoomed in. legs ain't needed, smaller picture means her signing is more "silent". also better to film frontal, if you have to film at an angle, then max 45° angle, makes it easier to understand eg 8:29 is good.

Not sure what you mean. The person you see signing IS the presenter. That is Justina Miles. She is deaf. She has her speech playing over the speakers and she is also signing her own speech.

Also making the signing smaller and more “silent” literally refutes the entirety of her point in her presentation.

I find ASL very interesting as Hard of Hearing.. I know I will only loose more and more of my hearing... but I am not a native English speaker, in my country they also have another kind of sign language, but as I do not live there anymore it makes no sense for me to learn it, but I do not live in USA either, anyway I find that there is so much content and more possibilities of future communication on learning ASL than other sign language... is it on the way of becoming the international sign language? I mean the same way English became the language for doing business internationally..

There is sign for every and anywhere. Every language has their own version of sign language as well as does ASL have different versions regionally just as speech has regional slang according to what area code you live in.

@APValerius I agree with you. I am an ASL student earning my Bachelor's degree in ASL and Deaf Studies. I am going into my 4th year next week. I also completed my interpreter training program and got an Associates degree in ASL interpreting. Recently I got licensed to interpret in Mississippi. I will honestly say, I still have A LOT to learn about ASL and Deaf culture. I did not improve my receptive skills until I began to immerse myself into the Deaf Community. Now I can recognize that I have trouble understanding Justina Miles because of MY lack of experience communicating with a fluent signer, with her accent, speed... everything that makes her who she is... ❤❤❤❤ She does not need to change for me, I need to grow so that I can communicate with everyone I encounter in the Deaf/deaf community. Another person mentioned the camera angles and distance was a bit of a problem, and I agree with that. But, really we just have to keep improving ourselves. Not everyone has perfect hands. Some signers are missing fingers, have severe arthritis and other issues. We have to do our best, period. I hope I don't seem angry or rude because that is not my intention. I am just sharing my experience.

@@roxanaduval6650So she is explaining the important of deaf people being themselves through ASL and you’re like, you should cut off your nails because I can’t stand them. Sounds like a YOU problem. Im not a fan of long nails on myself but I understand her clearly.

Justina is a Deaf Performer. It's literally part of her practice to be more animated or expressive than most are. Also, some people have a different signing style than others, I think it was beautiful and perfectly true to who she is. Her culture outside of being apart of the Deaf community does not water down what she was saying.
