In Russian we have several parts for our names: a first name, a surname, and a patronymic. In this video, I explained how patronymics are derived from our fathers' names.

Every single comment like Love Russia, Love Russian names, Glory to Russia, Love Putin makes me think of thousands killed by those "normal Russians" in Bucha, Izyum, Kiev and tons of bombs falling every day on our homes. And those comments come mostly from countries like India, Brazil and very often Italy. Why Italy? I just dont understand. That hurts. You guys suffered so much in the past too... It's not truly a middle name though, it's the patronymic. As I understand it, and maybe someone who knows Russian culture better than me (who admits to knowing very little) can correct me, usage of the given name with the patronymic is somewhat in the middle ground of formality; ongoing contact yet not a close friend or family, such as an office setting.

It's not really a name. For example, you can go by your middle name, you can't go by your patronymic, unless it's a VERY informal situation, like for example, you are all very drunk and someone calls you by patronymic as a joke. Even so, it's kinda outdated

@@deadcatbounce3124 The use of the name and patronymic occurs either in a formal, working setting, or when referring to the interlocutor with respect, often to those who are older. It is allowed to use only the patronymic, but this is already an informal respectful, and even a little familiar address. This is allowed only if the interlocutors know each other well and are old acquaintances or friends.

In Irish we have the same system. Its not used by English speakers but it is still used in the Gaeltacht (Irish speaking areas). So my father in law is called Máirtín and his father was called Eddie. So his full name is simply Máirtín Eddie. His daughter Eileen would be called 'Eileen Máirtín Eddie'. But (since Irish is a Celtic language) you can also use the matronymic, following your mothers side. So in my case since I'm a blow-in (outsider), locals would refer to my children using the matronymic

In reality the young guy maybe did not know it but for centuries and till WW1 in some regions till WW2 also the Italian language had the " father respectful form" to every name. In example my granfather his name was Giovanni, in the ID had as complete name Giovanni fu Giacinto. Where Giacinto was his father and " fu" past form of the verb " to be" meant from Who he was born. That was by law till 4 generations ago, specially during the Monarchy not in the Republican time. Ciao ❤

In Basque Surnames are related as well to farms/houses. So you were known by it and you were known in the community based on the house you came from. People in the family were born and died, but the farm was always there, at the center of family life. Some houses are 400 years old or more. Granparents, parents and their 8-12 kids all use to life in the farm. To name a few: - Etxebarria "The New House" - Legazpi "(Farm) At the bottom of the Hill" - Rekalde " (Farm) Close to the Riverbend" -Aroztegui "House of the Smith" - Elizalde; "(Farm) Close to the Church" - Larrañaga "(Farm) near the cultivated fields" -Portuondo "(House) near the Seaport" - Urrutikoetxea "The House far away" - Lizarraga "(Farm) In the Ashtree Forest"

More interesting would be to ask what if Italian had Italian patronymics now. Medieval Italian did patronymics in several ways. Either Name + di Father's name (Niccolò di Bernardo) or Name + Fi'Name (Niccolò Fi'Bernardo) or even sometimes just the fossilised genitive of the name, Niccolò Bernardi, althoguh that could also be a plural, short for "Niccolò dei Bernardi", in which case it indicates the family, the Bernards.
