Textbook definition of 20/20 vision:
The ability to distinguish an image that subtends 5 minutes of arc at a 20 foot distance.
The numerator of 20/20 defines the testing distance of the person being tested and the denominator defines the testing distance that a person with “20/20” vision would have to stand in order to see the same sized letters.
Definition of legal blindness in the US:
If someone has 20/200 vision or less in the better seeing eye (with a corrective lens) or has less than 20 degrees of visual field, then they are considered legally blind.
Question of the Day: When was your last eye exam? How good are your eyes? Can you see 20/20? Let me know in the comments!

About this video: When was the last time you checked your visual acuity or had an eyesight test? At your last eye exam, an optometrist or another eye care professional likely completed an eye test where they measured your visual acuity by completing the snellen test or reading the snellen chart. If you were fortunate enough, your vision corrected to at least the 20/20 line. But what is 20/20 vision? What does 20/20 vision mean? Check out this video to find out.

My corrected vision is at least 20/10, probably a little bit better because the very bottom line is perfectly clear with glasses. People with "perfect" vision are often surprised when I can read things they can't see.
@lolerie
@lolerie 2 жыл бұрын
That is because they do not have perfect vision. Most refractometers only have 0.25 resolution, so anything below 0.25 is not visable. For example I have -4.12 sphere and -4.87 cylender om my right eye which is further rounded on those meters. Also glasses cannot be done with this in mind. There is also keratometers that allow to see the astigmatism components.

My 30 year old son is legally blind in 1 eye. We were told by an optometrist that it was because he was given an extremely high level of oxygen when he was born. Have you ever heard of this? When his children were born, he was practically breathing down the nurses necks making sure they weren't given too much oxygen. I've always wondered about that whole ordeal.

This is like what happened to my mom as a newborn, in an incubator, but it may have been heat rather than too much oxygen, or was both. She has that on top of genetic eye issues. I seem to have inherited genetic issues. My mom is vague on what her actual eye issues are, like if severe myopia, if bad floaters, and so on. She had cataract surgery and still has issues. She had a retinal detachment about 10-11 years ago. I had one 2 years ago.

Doctor Eye, I want to ask you something that's been puzzling me on this test. I noticed that this type of test is done in a dark room with a lit screen. But on a dark room the iris of the eye is opening, letting more light in. One's cornea may not be constant in shape and it can distort if the iris is more open, because light is entering the eye on a much wider area through cornea. But if there is a lot of light (like in a sunny day), light enters through a narrower hole in the eye and maybe it doesn't affect the part of the cornea where you may have problems. So, why is the tests concluded in the dark? Will glasses work the same in the dark and in the light?

With eye exams, are they always aiming to get 20/20 or higher, or do you simply aim for a certain spot? When switching through the discs in the eye thingie, once it reaches one type of spot. Once the person says yes, they usually stop. Wondering if all examiners go for a generalization, or if you simply know there is nothing more you can do with glasses alone. Thoughts and answers are much appreciated! Thanks.
@DoctorEyeHealth
@DoctorEyeHealth 4 жыл бұрын
Great question Michael. We do aim to get at least 20/20. IF a person cannot read 20/20 with optical correction alone, we search for a medical reason why (cataracts, retinal disease, corneal disease, neurological problems etc). During the refraction process, it is best to not "overprescribe" so it is generally accepted to give the least amount of minus power needed to read the 20/20 line. However, that is a bit of an oversimplification. There are several endpoints to be considered with a final prescription.

What's the importance of the eye exam these days compared to say, back in the 1980's? A thought in my head is just wondering why we still have to do these tests and not have technology solve some of the problem for us. Has technology improved such that the eye chart is more just a verification process? Or are we still quite lacking in tools to be able to just measure every part of a patient's eyes and determine what they could see on the chart?
@hnek

Why did 20/20 become the norm? How many people were tested before they decided that was normal person sight? Also, why isn’t it ok to get a prescription that may not be completely 20/20? maybe it’s like 20/23 but you like things a little softer? I remember being a kid in like 8th grade and the guy was like “I gave you better than 20/20 with these!” And like great I could practically cut myself on how sharp everything was but I didn’t need them to be, and maybe he made my eyes worse in the long run by forcing them? I’ve been as bad as 20/500 though it’s going down, now.

@hilaryweiner893

Dr. Allen, you do a good job of educating people about general eye health, but on the matter of less than 20/20 vision there is much more nuance to less than standard vision than you represent in your video. As someone with vision that cannot be corrected by optometrists, I would like to provide some insight into this. I fall in a strange netherworld where my vision can be corrected to between 20/40 and 20/50 in my better eye. The other is estimated at 20/800. I'm still able to drive with a restricted license, and this is the case in most states, so implying that 20/20 vision is important for driving is not entirely correct. As my brother-in-law says, cars are large objects, so it doesn't take great vision to avoid running into them! I can read using a Kindle with large font, and I can do most ordinary things. Where I do run into issues is reading sheet music, which requires excellent VA at an intermediate distance, even more so than using computers.. Optometrists like you believe my vision is good enough to use ordinary glasses, but they don't work very well. The low vision docs won't prescribe telescopic lenses for someone with vision as "good" as mine and tell me to memorize my music. The musicians exhort me to learn Braille, which doesn't solve the issue of sight reading in groups because you need both hands to play most musical instruments. Enlarging the music on a copy machine creates other issues. After many years of playing flute in bands and flute choirs, this is an activity I am no longer able to do because of nonstandard vision. I am an amateur, so it doesn't interfere with my profession. But I know at least one individual who has had to consider retiring from his post because of this. So less than standard vision can have serious consequences, especially if the vision loss happens later in life.

Very well said. Thank you sharing. I felt the video was already a bit long so I didnt want to get too far into the discussion about low vision and such. That will come in other videos. But I loved your descriptions. thanks again.

So, instead of saying how many 'minutes' the size of the print one must be able to read at 20 ft. away to have 20/20 vision, can you tell us the actual measurement of the letters? Like, if I can read print that is 1/2 inch or 1 inch or 1 cm or whatever big at 20 feet then I would have 20/20 vision. Thanks.

When i was 6 years old my parents took me to the optometrist beacause they realised i realy could't see much. I had +6 in both eyes(thats why my dad remembers it i was 6yo,666). I had a lot of trouble reading then in the year following i learned to see and my vision when to 4 and 4.5 and slowly got better until i got glasses somewhere else and they where't the right prescription. I whent back to my optometrist and the last i whent there my eyes where 3 and 2.5 and my eyes are noe both 2. I am 20,my eyes are now 2.0 in each eyes,thats how im gonna remember it

I have low vision and I use a while cane, I am not legally blind, I can see people blurt it’s like having wax paper over my eyes. Put wax paper over your eyes and look through it that’s how I see. I’m not illegally blind I can see just not very well. Legally blind is when you don’t see at all. 2020 vision I see light. I can’t see in the dark at all I haven’t gone out at night for years and years.

I wish my eyes worked like normal eyes (I’m short sighted and have a lazy eye which gives me double vision (recent development) and then I was told there’s no way of fixing it (when I tried the prism the colours of light were so visable so I don’t wanna use them).

That is a major bummer to hear. They cant do surgery to help?
@stealthhunter6998
@stealthhunter6998 4 жыл бұрын
Doctor Eye Health the eye surgeon there said they could but there’s no point because it’s an extremely high chance of just making the double vision worse because it’s not my eyes health it’s something to do with the way my brain has trained itself over the last few months to ignore the image from the left eye and favour the right eye (since it’s also got better vision), so if they did surgery to the eye to realign it, it wouldn’t fix the way my brain still interpreted the images from both eyes and puts them together anyway.

darn...i will have to get better at explaining it then. The simple answer is that it is a standard. Most human eyes should theoretically be able to see 20/20 under normal development.

@@DoctorEyeHealth May be, you do have to get better at it. If you think like a person who hasn't had a professional education in Optometry and then try to explain, it'll be easier to understand. I look up to you for a lot of advice and information.

I have no idea what my field of vision is without my glasses. I never thought to ask. All I know is I'm short sighted with an astigmatism. But there's one thing that is concerning me. That thing is the lid cleaning regime for blepharitis. I've recently learnt of a condition called Erythema Ab Igne. It's a skin condition caused by chronic exposure to infrared radiation in the form of heat. It can also be caused by everyday use of heat packs. I've heard it can possibly lead to cancer. And one of the steps in blepharitis care is the use of hot compresses or heat packs on the eyes to liquefy the plugged up oils in the meibomian glands. I'm wondering is there anyway to care for eyes that suffer from blepharitis without having to use heat? I'd be grateful for your thoughts on the subject. Is there any new treatments on the horizon for blepharitis? 👀☮️⚛️

why is this recommended to me? weird YT AI. and my vision is better than 20/20. can't remember how much better. but it was a lot better. and yeah, my country uses metric. so it's not called 20/20 in here. and that's been a while since i was tested. and my vision is still as good as when it was tested. i guess i'm one of the lucky ones. my younger brother eyesight is a lot worse than mine. he needed to use glasses for reading.

It seems to me that the concept of 20/20 vision is far more prevalent in US culture than in my country - I have no idea why. My country does use the metric system but you don't hear anybody talking about 6/6 vision either, generally people might mention diopters, or possibly talk about vision in percentages. I think generally if you would mention 20/20 vision they would understand it, but only because of US media which is very prevalent here, and they would associate the term with being an American thing (not that it is necessarily exclusively American, but people here would be exposed to the term through US media and therefore associate it with the US), and if you said 6/6 vision most people would have no idea what you were talking about. I'm talking about members of the general public, not eye care professionals - I am not an eye care professional so I really don't know what they would use to communicate to each other in a professional setting. I have had eye checks involving a Snellen chart but I was never told "you have x/y vision", only "your vision is good" and later on "you need to get further testing because you probably need glasses", the only numbers I've ever been told relating to my vision have been diopters/degrees of astigmatism.
