What is a Bad Bank and does India really need one?

The Indian government's ongoing actions to clean up the banking system are necessary. However the experience with private ARCs or Asset Reconstruction Companies, the precursor to the publicly funded Bad Bank hasn't been encouraging. See whether other countries have been successful and ask the question; will this clean-up too be a waste of taxpayer money?

We have made significant strides and I do believe bad loans by corporates are decreasing and will probably become much less into the future, the governent has done a good job, but we need to do it even faster and get rid of more PSU and fund 3 large PSU banks for infrastructure, bad loans(re capitalisation also), and one exclusively for stuff like PLI scheme and welfare schemes.

Unless govt changes the law to either give RBI more teeth or have another independent regulator, the problem will keep coming back again. The current laws tie RBI's hands when it comes to regulating govt banks. Its better that the govt uses the axis bank model and privatize most of the govt bank (bar maybe SBI). They should dilute their holding to around 30-40%, let them be privately run and give RBI more powers to regulate them.

I'm glad you took up this topic.ARCs may look like someone who cleans the Bank's BS but at the same time their measures are pretty dangerous.If you want to get a fair idea, go through the reviews of any ARC on google.Unfortunately there is no provision for this in SARFAESI Act. Also I feel IBC is a piece of art, why?Because the major law is being written as the case proceeds, there have been major ammendments in IBC until now.Insolvency pre pack will be a game changer.
