Indeed confusing to describe different concepts with the same term. Am I correct to conclude that your interpretation of "Data Domain" is also known as "Subject Area"? Using the latter term might prevent the confusion you talk about.

Yes "subject area" would work too. How I describe it changes depending on the people and the culture.
