I didn't quite understand the copy-on-write section with the coloured boxes. Do different developers have copies of the same container running on their individual machines? Or are they somehow running the same container on their individual machines and then when each developer makes a change it only keeps track of the differences (which are the coloured boxes)?

screw disk space in regards of the layers.. I guess memory would be a far bigger concern

Great explanation, thanks! Containers are the individual atomic elements (like nginx, msql, python) or the entire images run by docker?

This is going to sound like I am really old - which I guess I am. Think of an Image as a CDRW, when you insert it into the CD player and play it, it becomes a container - you can look at all the layers (the songs or data) but you cant edit it if you are actually listening to the songs. So you stop the container (stop the CD) and then add some songs or more data to the image. Then you can start the CD again (it becomes the container) - Not sure that really works but I thought I would have a go at explaining it like that 😂

Yeah, thanks! I was thinking the same way about ZIP files ))

A container is a running instance of the entire image, and this includes the base Linux layer and all the layers above

My interview question is How many layers can we create in docker?
