Faraday cages are only effective in blocking radio waves within the confines of the cage. If you are interested in disrupting radio or cellphone signals within a designated area, you would need to procure a “jamming device”, which is a device that emits powerful radio waves with the intention of overriding weaker radio waves. In this example, think of a radio wave like a small speaker playing music, and the jammer as a large speaker. When the large speaker is off, you can hear the small speaker, but if you turn on the large speaker, the small speaker is still making noise, but you can no longer understand what is coming out of it. Additionally, please be aware that certain uses of jamming devices are illegal in different states and countries, and it is within your best interest to do research on your local laws regarding jamming devices, where to procure a jamming device, and how to optimally operate one. Hope this answered your question.

No, they are not necessary. He only demonstrates that you can also have holes in the box, as long as they are smaller than the wavelength. For example, microwave ovens also have holes that allow short-waved light (400-700 nanometers) to pass throw them, while also blocking the long-waved (~12 cm long) microwaves radiation. Another example is the elevator, where your phone signals can get blocked without having holes in the elevator. So no, it's not necessary.

@rampoatchess27583 жыл бұрын
No actually, they are not small paraday's cages. They actually absorbed part of the signal and sometime redirect them (at least the invisibility to radar technology on stealth aircraft) making the whole aircraft vanish or become a hard to hit target (when applied on ships, with special hull geometry, the ships would have the reflected signal on radar as small as a fishing boat. Radar could easily lock on and shot down small target aircraft if they cannot proper communicate with it, but no way in hell they would do the same with fishing boats, since wouldnt have proper communication)

My guess is that it's because you created a conductive path with the foil and antenna, thereby essentially making your antenna bigger. But the radio is inside the box but not connected to it in a circuit. So the EM rays are caught by the Faraday cage and never get to interact with the radio.
@chutemi. Жыл бұрын
Aluminum foil is a conductive material, as most metals are, and increase the surface area of the antenna by absorbing the electromagnetic signal (radio waves) and conducting it through the foil into the tv antenna. Think of the antenna like a target, and the radio wave like a bullet coming out of a gun. It’s hard to hit a small target, so adding aluminum foil to make the target bigger makes it easier to hit. In this scenario, the foil is not connected to the antenna of the radio, so the waves that are absorbed have no way to conduct into the radio antenna. The foil surrounding the box acts more like an absorber, taking the energy from the radio waves and grounding it, preventing it from reaching the radio antenna. Hope this answers your question.

In essence the metal acts like a mirror for the electromagnetic wave the reflection is out of phase and cancels the incoming wave. Its more complicated than this because there is reflection, absorption, and attenuation, as the wave passes through. The most important factor is the penetration depth of the material depending on the properties of the material and the incoming wavelength. Longer wavelengths can penetrate more deeply into materials (including metals) than can shorter wavelengths. Light can't penetrate dry wall but WiFi can

A faraday cage blocks minute electromagnetic radiation, typically in the form of a radio wave. The intention behind the faraday cage is not to shield against electromagnetic pulses. Most EMP weapons are not designed to target specific households or private properties, but instead disrupt electricity production or distribution by targeting generation sites and distribution centers. Additionally, the majority of war or terrorism related electricity disruptions occur from physical munitions or explosives which directly destroy the site of electricity generation or distribution, exacerbating the period in which electricity is unavailable.

If your box has holes and you don't have a buffering material like plastic, cardboard, carpet pad or something similar, your "faraday cage" will be useless. You really should research a topic, and know what you're talking about, rather than misleading people.

@chutemi. Жыл бұрын
This isn’t necessarily true, as a faraday cage can work without any materials between the metal and receiving device, so long as the receiving device does not have a direct conductive connection to the cage. MITx Videos has a publicly available video on their KZbin channel titled “Faraday Cage” where you can view an example of a faraday cage constructed entirely out of conductive metals working without any “buffering material”.
@chutemi. Жыл бұрын
You may also be confusing a faraday cage for a dampening material, commonly lead or concrete, and sometimes water. Dense materials such as lead and concrete are able to block electromagnetic radiation, most famously ionizing radiation, by directly absorbing the energy from the electromagnetic wave.
