Genetically modified foods have been demonized in recent years by health advocates and environmentalists alike. If we look at the history of food cultivation, however, it is apparent we've been eating them all along. Scientific American editor Eric R. Olson explains.

Rod Martin, Jr. Like I said in my other comment THERE ARE OTHER COMPANIES THAT MAKE GMO'S BESIDES MONSANTO. Obviously you've just got it into your head that Monsanto is evil and therefore wrong. Even if the Monsanto study was flawed, there are hundreds of other studies backing up the conclusion that GMO's are safe. Take a look at this article: gmopundit.blogspot.ca/p/450-published-safety-assessments.html You make it sound as if only 2 studies have been done. That's ridiculous. try to do a little more research. "If Monsanto is so proud of their GMOs, why don't they have them labeled? Why don't we have all packaged food (most of it) labeled with GMO if they use any such products. Why don't we have animals fed GMOs labeled as "GMO fed?" " Obviously because it would affect sales. Most people don't know very much about GMO's, and it makes sense. You don't need to know about bioengineering and genetics to be an accountant or a lawyer or a hairdresser. This is part of why GMO's sound so scary. "What?!? they're putting genes from animals in my food?! DANGER!" it's a gut reaction of fear to something unknown. Unfortunately, the anti-gmo fear spreads a lot faster than the information that GMO's are actually safe. Personally, if they labelled GMO products, I'd start buying only GMO's, just to screw with anti-gmo people, but most people won't do that. It's like the gluten-free craze. In general unless you have an allergy to gluten, it's going to be more harmful than helpful to eat completely gluten free. Yet Gluten-free products are now a billion dollar industry. If GMO's were labeled, it would validate everyone's fear that they're dangerous "why would they need to label it if it were safe?" they would say. And it's true. If it's safe, there's really no need to spend the time and money labeling them and putting label standards into law.

***** Agreed with you CZY. RainAngell states others need to do more research before spouting out against Monsanto, but Monsanto is the giant of the industry. Also, RainAngell, a few of my good friends worked or currently still work for some of the these companies...for example ConAgra Foods, McDonalds, Tyson Foods, Coca-cola, etc. I used to be a consultant and worked on numerous projects the beverage industry for major companies that owned subsidiaries like Snapple Beverages, Energy Brands, Hansens Brands, etc. I can tell you without a doubt that my friends continue to tell me NOT to eat their foods. Bodvar Manen All most all insulin used by diabetics today is made from Genetically Modified cells(gmo). Before genetic engineering(gmo), diabetics injected insulin extracted from pig and cow pancreases. Some diabetics had allergic reactions to insulin from animal pancreatic tissue. Through genetic engineering(gmo), the insulin gene from humans is inserted into bacteria. The bacteria act as miniature(gmo) factories pumping out an insulin protein identical to human insulin. This insulin is then purified and used for human medical purposes.

Shelby Thompson That is completely untrue. Do you know what gluten is? It's a protein that is in many grains and is always in wheat. How long have we been eating bread? How long have we been eating wheat period? For a really long time. that's how long. I can guarantee you, 200 years ago, 99% of breads and pastas had gluten in them. Also gluten is completely harmless unless you have an allergy, which less than 1% of the population does. In fact, many doctors have stated that a gluten free diet can be lacking in essential nutrients.
@CraigBlack123
@CraigBlack123 9 жыл бұрын
Shelby Thompson Gluten is not man-made. It’s a natural protein found mainly in wheat, rye, barley, and oats. It’s also present in many processed foods as a thickener, which is why some might assume gluten isn’t natural.It’s important to understand that gluten isn’t only found in wheat and wheat products. It’s also in any food made from barley, rye, oats, and some other grains. According to experts at the Center for Celiac Research at the University of Maryland, foods which are absent of wheat gluten may not be free from other grain gluten, so it’s important to be aware that wheat is not the only source of gluten in food. Advocates for consumer safety also warn that cross contamination makes producing gluten-free products impossible if they’re processed in the same facility as foods that contain wheat and other gluten grains.

Selective breeding and GMO's are different things. While there is an unanswerable debate around GMO'S I think the main issue with this video is that it makes GMO's seem natural by comparing it to a system, selective breeding, that in reality in incredibly different and should not be correlated with.

I think the main issue is not all GMO are what people think. They’re thinking of the term bioengineered. Which tells you automatically this was made in a lab and given genes it can’t get though a breeding process. GMO can mean a lot of things and generally seems to be a useless term much like all natural or free-range.

I know, but most people think of nature as something almost "magical" not involving chemicals, atoms and molecules, those words just scare them. That's basically the key to this whole thing, sadly even in the western world we haven't figured out how to teach basic level science in high school. I'm from Italy, here high school is divided in different addresses (classical, linguistic, scientific, technical schools, etc), and unless you choose a scientific one, science is basically non-existant.

I’m not crazy about the idea of GMO foods. Interesting about the corn, but it was done through a natural process. They weren’t mixing it up with something totally different. Tomatoes have been ruined because they tampered with them in order to have them uniform in shape and have them ripen at the same time. Turns out the gene that controls shape also controls taste. Tomatoes in my youth tasted great. Now they are like cardboard. I read that in the newspaper a few years back. I am not a scientist. Who knows what the ultimate effect will be when you’re screwing around at a cellular level with what I consider limited knowledge of the ultimate outcome.

The video said that GM is the same as natural crossing but speeded up, but we know this is far from the truth. As for testing we have food regulatory bodies that rely on data provided by the very companies that will benefit from their approvals. The majority of the studies are neither peer-reviewed nor published, and it is extremely difficult to get access to the data as the German and French Governments have found along with many independent scientists. Assumptions of safety is not enough.

Every bit of food getting down to our bowels is quickly attacked by a multitude of enzymes. As we chew, amylases start breaking down starch into dextrin. When the food mass gets to the stomach, it is doused with very potent hydrochloric acid, the proteins curdle and denaturate, before being clipped into small bits by a protease called pepsin. In the duodenum, the resulting half-digested mass mixes with bile from the gallbladder and enzymes from the pancreas. The bile emulgates fats, turning them into tiny droplets, after which pancreatic lipase breaks them into glycerine and fatty acids, which are absorbed into the lymph by the intestine; the pancreatic peptidase called tripsin finishes destroying the proteins down to amino acids, which are further absorbed into the bloodstream; pancreatic amylase completely destroys dextrins to glucose, which is also absorbed; and finally, nucleases cut any genetic material (DNA or RNA) entering the duodenum into single nucleotides, which are the same for all species of animals, plants, fungi and bacteria. The nucleotides are absorbed and utilized. That is why GM food is perfectly safe - no harm can be done to our organism by some extra genetic material. It will get cut and processed, like any other DNA coming into our GI tract. Relax.

***** Wrong! Some people have been found to have intestinal flora (past the HCl barrier) that has acquired the genetic trait of producing insecticide! GMOs need to be tested far, far, far more before being released for human consumption, but FDA execs used to work for Monsanto. They're no help. Conflict of interest. Seralini's very similar study to Monsanto's 3 months, went on for 2 years and found massive cancerous tumors, renal failures and sterility. GMO's are potentially a loaded gun -- a loose canon.

The FDA approves GMO foods because if their unique nature. We have other major safety agencies. You sure have not looked much, there is a global consensus on GMO safety. GMO 20-year safety endorsement: 280 science institutions, more than 3,000 studies "Currently, there is a social and political controversy about the safety of foods produced from genetically modified (GM) crops. However, in the scientific community, there is no dispute or controversy regarding the safety of these crops. To date, more than 3,000 scientific studies [1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8] have assessed the safety of these crops in terms of human health and environmental impact. These studies together with several reviews performed on a case-by-case from regulatory agencies around the world have enabled a solid and clear scientific consensus: GM crops have no more risk than those that have been developed by conventional breeding techniques. In addition, there is also extensive literature that compiles the socioeconomic and environmental benefits that transgenic crops have reported in two decades of commercialization [9,10]. This document brings together the public statements of technical and scientific institutions that adhere to this consensus. I made an update based on this document from ChileBio that initially included 40 official documents representing about 190 institutions - the document from ChileBio was subsequently updated in 2017 with the institutions and statements attached here. The update shows that 284 technical and scientific institutions recognize the safety of GM crops and their potential benefits. Interestingly a large part of these institutions are located in Europe, the continent that has put more obstacles to the commercialization of these crops. On the other hand, the countries with most organizations in favor of GM crops are United Kingdom (33), United States (25), Italy (23), Spain (16) and Germany (11). In conclusion, 284 technical and scientific institutions recognize that GM crops are not riskier than those produced by conventional breeding, and/or the potential benefits of these crops." geneticliteracyproject.org/2017/06/19/gmo-20-year-safety-endorsement-280-science-institutions-more-3000-studies/

This is the same as the nuts that say, "all vaccines are safe" or "all vaccines are bad" which both are false. So you can't tell me by any stretch of imagination that because some GMO's have tested safe that it means all are. I have Zero trust in both unchecked science that has the potential to do so much harm. Not to mention all the normal crops that have been cross pollinated thus contaminated by gmo's leading to some pretty f'd up land grabs by companies that infected others crops. but what ever, all I can do is control what I eat. @@greglast8016 You are correct, but you seem to be aware that some GMOs have been tested and the tests have not proven them to be safe, and those GMOs are not approved and not grown. There is even an exception in the case of Starlink corn, which was tested by the developer, test results shown to FDA, and the FDA disagreed with the company about whether safety was proven. Specifically the novel protein in Starlink was not digested quickly enough and FDA considered that it could possibly be an allergen. The company complied with FDA's decision, but came back with data that showed the protein digesting much much faster in some food animals' digestive tract, so they asked for permission to grow it as an animal food. FDA unwisely allowed that and some Starlink corn accidentally got into the human food supply, although there was never any allergy caused by it. The other widely known case of a GMO food kept off the market for safety reasons is the soybean with a Brazil nut gene. In this case, the developing company, itself, found that the novel protein was an allergen, cancelled the project and furthermore it produced a protocol to prevent it ever happening, and FDA adopted that protocol. When the industry brags that its food is safe, it is entirely because of their extensive testing.

During the whole time GMOs have been in our food, cancer rates, per 100000 population, have decreased rather steadily. @SciAmerican people dont like GM b/c its genetically altered. People dont like it because of the economic or environmental damage it causes. There are some unethical GM companies. Ex. Monsanto whose had a nonseed insecide immune bearing corn or wheat strain thats growing wild in the midwest. (I forget if its corn or wheat). Monsanto has been using its legal muscle to avoid paying massive fines. On the other hand there are good companies like the vitamin rice strain from china.
@charlesmrader
@charlesmrader 2 жыл бұрын
First, your example is wheat. It was a few plants of a variety that had been tested and found OK but never grown commercially. The total amount of wheat seeds found was less than a pound, which if it got into the US wheat supply of fifty million tons would be totally free of any bad effect. But there was economic damage because the anti-GMO fanatics got numerous wheat importing countries to briefly ban US wheat, benefiting their own in-country farmers, and, second, Monsanto DID pay for the caused economic loss to farmers. Third, the good company behind golden rice is not a company at all. It was developed by two scientists funded by an NGO, and they gave the GMO rice to the International Rice Research Institute for further development and testing. When it is finally approved, it will be distributed for free, which no company could do and survive.

The color of water is inherent to the molecules. two hydrogens, one oxygen. There is not much room for change there. However, you could add a purple pigment to a glass of water, that makes the resulting solution nice and pretty, but it still wouldn't change the water I don't think.

So what's the difference between non genetic modified foods and genetic modified foods?
@sarahcwienold5188
@sarahcwienold5188 2 жыл бұрын
The only difference is the process I think. Genetic modification, or nowadays called genetic engineering, is done by a few methods, but generally it's from a process that involves something other than putting gametes together. E.g. a specialized bacterium can insert a gene from another bacteria into corn to produce a toxin that only affects certain insect due to a receptor in the insect's gut. Or genetic material from a virus can be put into papaya to allow its cells to attack any version of that genetic material and thus stay alive despite infection. In theory, some things, like the non-browning apple, could be obtained through traditional breeding, that's why it's hard to regulate certain GM organisms. I argue that the resulting product is more important than how it was obtained, because there are dangerous invasive organisms that result from entirely ordinary means, and many benign and benefitial GMOs. Of course, the opposite is also true, hence why new varieties of organisms obtained by any means should be evaluated equally.

Does the public have a right to choose or avoid GMO foods?
@popeyegordon
@popeyegordon 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, but it is pointless. GMO is a breeding method only, never an ingredient. We have a new sensible GM labeling law in effect this year. It rules out labeling any refined sweeteners or oils as GMO. THE PUBLIC does not give a shit about breeding methods like grafting, seed selection or hybrids, which equally change the gene codes of our foods. When THE PUBLIC equally demands to know about ALL breeding methods being used and not just GMO because the organic thugs launched a propaganda campaign against it, we will listen. Not before.

[sarcasm] This is exactly what I am learning in school, and guess what they are teaching us (surprise, surprise)?! "Oh yes, I'm sure GMOs are safe." Now to be real: to quote the words of my uncle, "If it was meant to be in there, it would have been in there." As a Christian, God comes above man's take on science. I am sure that if God had felt it was safe or okay, he would have put those particular genes in our crops. On the other hand, I find it significant that one of my friend's sisters is a complete celiac when on North American soil, but European (take note that Europeans, for the most part, are much stricter with "new" things than North American countries) gluten products agree with her body just fine. I've heard some similar affirmations from others as well. Also, selective breeding is much different from all the "junk" that they do with living organisms now - in selective breeding, at least the genes stayed in the organism they were made for; all the transgenic organisms nowadays are given characteristics from who-knows-where. You can't base your faith on science; it's completely fallible, and it can take years to discover that something that was considered safe is actually not safe.
@jessicakay9020
@jessicakay9020 7 жыл бұрын
Well then why is my friend’s sister able to eat wheat products in Europe (whose acceptance of GMOs is much more stringent than in the Americas), but cannot eat them in the Americas? How are we to say that adding a gene that is not meant for an organism will not modify the original genes of that organism (therefore, causing an intolerance or worse of a certain protein)? How many things created in science were considered safe for decades, before further tests proved them to be harmful/ toxic to humans and/or the environment and/or other living organisms? We won’t know the harmful or toxic effects of GMOs until maybe decades later. Check out the video of Dr. David Suzuki entitled, "Professor David Suzuki speaks out against GMOs." (By the way, he is a doctor, not just a professor.) P.S. Selective breeding is not the same as genetic engineering - plants selectively bred still, at least, have genes they are meant to have (they are just expressed more or less or not at all); whereas, genetically engineered organisms actually become different - they are not the same organism anymore, because something has been added to their genome

There must be a memo out from Monsanto because this is a new tactic that I've seen in the last few days. Since we don't want to be lab rats in the GMO science experiment perpetrated on the populations of the USA and Canada without our consent, then we are anti-science. I'm not anti-Science, I'm anti-high handed scientists who think they know best but have this glaring shortcoming. They lack common sense. Even grade school children can figure out that when you spray something with poison and it kills bugs, maybe you shouldn't be eating it either. Did you even watch the video? I doubt it.

Organic foods use far more toxic chemicals and pesticides and are worse for the environment. I can tell you're not from a science background and it's a shame that you need a science degree to understand how GMO technology works. And no, there's no memo from Monsanto, I happen to be educated and have actually done experiments in the lab.

You are delusional. Have a look at Nancy Swanson's charts that have been appearing in the Examiner. Watch what Anthony Samsel has to say about some of those tests that Monsanto did. Why did they only publish the 90 day studies and not the much longer studies? Why did they try to hide the longer studies behind some trade secret screen? I'll tell you why. I'd lay odds that those rats in that long term study did just as poorly as the rats in the Seralini study. I don't want to bet on my families health. We have opted out of this massive feeding study and all of us feel much better than we did when we didn't know what we were eating as the stuff is not labeled. Thanks so much to the GMA and the Agra-chemical companies for that. Heavy sarcasm.

You have no idea what you're going on about. The people you mention prey on the people with weak science background and continue to push baseless fear mongering. It's actually very profitable, just look at the supplement and organic food industry. Everything you mention is false. I don't know if you're ignorant or flat out lying. Actually there ARE plenty of long term studies that have been done AND they are also independent. This is a review of 12 of them: www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0278691511006399 "We examined 12 long-term studies (of more than 90 days, up to 2 years in duration) and 12 multigenerational studies (from 2 to 5 generations). … The studies reviewed present evidence to show that GM plants are nutritionally equivalent to their non-GM counterparts and can be safely used in food and feed." I'm sorry to say but you're being fed misinformation. You're illiteracy in scientific knowledge is being manipulated for profit. There is a reason why there is a scientific consensus in this issue, and it's not a conspiracy. The Seralini study was retracted because it was so poor. Any student that's taken toxicology or research analysis 101 would tell you the flaws in that study.

Your dad was wrong. All sugars are the same. Refined sweeteners and oils will no longer be labeled GMO even when they come from GMO crops. Why? Because the refining process removes all traces of DNA and stray proteins. Refined Organic sweeteners are chemically identical to GMO sourced versions. Our new labeling law ends the practice of labeling 'GMO sugar'. It's just sugar. Your dad is science illiterate but maybe not his fault, education is poor in many countries.
