A better version than the CD is an old hard drive. They are metal, round, incredibly shiny, and won't break like the cd, plus they are smaller. One of the ones I use, I have used as a mirror on deployment, goes in my pack, use it as a mirror in the shower when I shave, etc. I've been using it for over 7 years and its still going strong.

Hiram, thanks for the great ideas. How a simple thing like standing in a garbage bag and using the poncho can make you completely covered for a good shelter. Another is the simple tin can with two holes and wire in the bottom, love it! Thanks for sharing!

Great video. I would add a plastic spoon, so you have something to eat your oatmeal with. Keep the cloth bag. A piece of cloth has many uses. i tend to carry a bandanna or large cloth handkerchief.

Thanks for sharing that kit Hiram! I can recommend adding rubber bands to the kit. They can be wrapped on the lighter to prevent the button from being pushed, instead of the zip tie. Rubber bands make sealing a water bag easy (twist bag top, fold twist over in upside down U shape, wrap tight with rubber band). They can be used a a fire starter, and have many other uses. Great idea on the vacuum bagger sealer for several items. Time to get me one of those!

A great kit well thought out, I like how you call it a "get lost kit" makes more sense to view it that way. That's a nice bag it can carry quite a bit for its size. I have a similar sized bag for my hunting bag but mine used to be a bag for a Gas mask used by the Polish military. Great video, one of my favorite of your vids..

Great kit. Do you have bug juice in there? That angle iron idea is a good one. Maybe add a couple more holes at the bottom so you can use some wood screws to attach it to a pole as well as a hacksaw blade. Maybe add an UGLY BLADE for pruning by Skil for sawzalls. They cut both ways. I carry one between the kydex and nylon on my knife sheaths. Instead of a candle, carry a 1 oz. liquid candle. It burns 10-12 hours and isn't much bigger than a tea candle. The cap seals it VERY well. It won't leak.

Some great ideas in this one. The only piece of advice I would add is on a straw type filter, with a new one suck some water in and blow it back out to backflush any residue from the manufacturing process and then drink away.

Hiram I so enjoy armchair getting lost with you. You're thoughtful and you also like to do it on the cheap. Loved Max's entrance and exit. The only thing the video was missing was your wife's big purse sitting next to it lol.There's a couple of things I think are well worth the money, at least where I live, Vermont - the 2Go Systems reflective poncho and even better, the Trifecta bivvytarp he has. I bought the V2. I am camped out in Vermont by choice because I enjoy it - and was getting cold - put that bivvy/tarp over my bedding and voila, it was amazing and no condensation. It's worth the pound weight. Keep the videos and Max coming.

Great vid. New, to me, ideas to use. CD, lead holder, angle iron. Cotton bag - water filter - others mentioned. Coffee filter. Large compression bandage. Strips 4 candle wicking & cordage. Unravel 4 thread. Cook in it (think herb bag). Small pot holder. Washcloth/dishrag. Dust/medical mask. Wet for smoke mask. Small fish net. Neck bag. Reusable TP. Fabric for clothing patch & pocket repair. Support for condom water bag. Shell for mitten - stuff w/dry grass. Wrap with duct tape 4 sturdy bag.

Some very good items on here and multi purpose as well. Leather gloves or a pot lifter would make life easier when boiling water if you need to go that route. I like your CD compass, signal mirror combo. The spear, saw handle is good and the wire saw. Good stuff.

I personally think people go too small for a day hike (or "get lost") kit. I don't see a reason to not have a good kit. carrying tiny everything means it's likely something will fail. A 10 lb kit is going to do you a lot better than a 2.5 lb kit as long as everything in it is tested to last.
@grapplergirl105 жыл бұрын
I really enjoyed some of your ideas, especially the sealed ID/info/money. But no multitool, or clotting bandage/sponge for stopping bleeding? And I would add a bandana over a coffee filter. It can strain water, but also use as a bandage, or for head cooling/washing, for fire starting or, if torn into strips, a trail marker etc. I personally always take a bottle of eye drops/saline. Nothing worse than dirt etc in your eye, and can also be used to clean debris off of a scrape wound or cut.

rarely do I disagree with your videos but you actually have the 5 "C"s of get lost,, they are cordage,, you have abour 4 different types there to include the bank line you couldnt think of its name.you have cutting tools...., cover ,,,the rain gear and black bag, cintainer ,, the can for water etc... and combustion ....the lighter and the paperbag..its on most of the other survuvor channels,as the 5 "C"s and as you also stated the "Redundancies".. other than that its a great video to instruct those that dont know.

Stumbled on your channel when I was looking for ranger bands. Saw this video on the playlist. Like your down to earth attitude. Also like the idea of vacuum packing things. For a small, cheap easy food idea check out budget101.com. They have under the recipe section in a mug recipes that include some easy soup mixes that would vac down small and give a boost to your moral after you got settled in with shelter. So many bushcrafters or survivalists don't always explain what something is so the newcomers have to go find out. Thanks for sharing what you know.

Thanks so much for the video. I was refreshing to hear that someone would take a Winnebago for SURVIVAL rather than an altoids tin. And you seem to have found a "happy medium" in the "survivalist" world with your "whopping" 2 1/2 lb "get lost bag". It's almost like there's a "name that tune" competition going on out there to see who can "survive" on LESS. In a survival situation, you'll always wish you had more. ESPECIALLY refreshing was your insistence that SHELTER is #1. All the bushcraft community gives that FACT mere lip service, then proceeds to the "cool" stuff. I live north of you and sometimes the "three hour" limit for exposure is a wishful dream. So shelter cannot be overdone. I would find it hard to turn to any bushcraft channel and find a SHELTER in their "survival" pack that would actually help them (or me) survive in exposure conditions. Cram in a mylar and shelter is "checked" off the list. REALLY? I loved your shelter and even you admitted it is only THREE seasons. I only have two tips that I would add: 1) if you put TWO of those 55 gal drum liners in your pack, you can slit the ends off of each and run 2 logs thru them both like tubes and make a raised bed to get you off the snow or cold or wet ground. You then have your mylar, and space blanket for cover and heat retention and reflection. Uncut, they could be filled with leaves and litter to make a mattress to get you off the ground. I got this idea from Really Big Monkey 1 in his video "Part Three Survival Vacation". If you packed the clear kind, they could be used for "greenhouse" effect in sunny cold weather as per reference below. 2) I "pack heat" - of some kind - to get instant warmth - I pack the instant foot, hand and body warmers but also whatever you would feel comfortable with in your shelter - a few tea lights in your tin can, a tuna can or tiny cat food can with wax, or cotton rounds soaked for ten minutes in wax and laid into the tin can - which because of the holes can be suspended from your ridge line inside your shelter. The CLEAR drum liner (if large enough) can be opened to make a "greenhouse" either to trap sun for heat or to make a fire outside your shelter and trap it (see Mors Kohanski super shelter, Hilton Hacienda, etc). If you soak the rounds in a mix of wax and indoor lamp oil, they will make lots of HEAT, but not burn as long as pure wax. I make both kinds of disks. And for fire starting, I make the disks in lamp oil and wax mix but only dip them for a count of "four one thousand". I soak my matches in the same mix and they become "fatwood" fire starters. All are waterproof. The disks even can go in a shirt pocket. Much better than the vaseline and cotton balls. Here are two videos I'm sure you will Love: Norwegian Bushcraft "Firedisk upgrade" Intense Angler "Self-Igniting Fire Starter" I love your videos. Keep up the great and BALANCED, down to earth approach. All the best to you and yours.
