the part about learning how to chain before learning gtr is so true. i started puyo using nothing but gtr, but i'd have a lot of trouble getting past a 7. for the past few months, i switched to only using sandwich and now i can consistently get 10 chains in solo play. i'm excited to try using gtr again in my matches

I haven't played Puyo in some time, but I remember trying to use the GTR transition, failing to do anything meaningful with it, and just giving up to return to Sandwich. Having it explained like this actually provides a lot of insight on -why- you would use something like this and how. Kind of makes me want to boot up PPT2 or something again.

Good video. I get the method more now. Also I'm glad you explained GTR is more of tool then the garanteed best way to play and that you encouraged other ways first. That is something I agree with. In a Tumblr post I did a while back recommending Puyo on how to recommend getting people into Puyo I said let them play how they wanna play. When they're ready to do more serious stuff like GTR then they're ready, no need to hurry to get to that point. It's like if a kid this day and age gets into casual Smash Melee, you just let them play how they want and later decide they wanna get serious. That's how I see it anyways. I'll rewatch it a few times and try see myself improving.

I saw that post actually, it was a good read! The circles I usually frequent lean into the more competitive side which has a lot of GTR propaganda and its usage is near universal, where I guess it's fine there but for those getting into the series... well yeah I don't think it's the best plan to forcefully a specific setup before anything else. Not against anyone using it, it's a strong technique and you can grow with it as a player, but I'm very much an advocator of just having fun with the game and using what personally works for that person. If they want to clean up their play a little bit or learn some new things, the resources are always there, but it shouldn't be forced down their throat either.

@@SchoellScrub Agreed. If a newbie thinks Feli is cool or something, let them play as Feli to their hearts content. It shouldn't matter if they become a more serious player to me, that's that random newbie's choice to make. And if they go serious good on them.

I overuse GTR tbh. It's muscle memory. I know it's better to avoid GTR in Sun (especially on the actual classic sun games, due to how Sun Puyo are placed there) and in Fever (where it just takes time away that would be better spent gathering Fever points), but it's so intuitive to build that I usually do it without thinking about it....

I was stuck in GTR hell for *years* and there's a reason why I stopped relying on it - It's so well known that it's a predictable means of causing a quick 2-3 chain harass to cover the first column and lock the chain out of its first floor. It got to a point where I learned other chain forms (Sandwich, L-shape, Stairs in particular) and adapted my playstyle to sandwiches after unlearning habits from GTR. I would say that learning sandwich eventually leads you into GTR in a sense. It's natural to fit a GTR on floor 2 to get into floor 3 if you adjust the height of your sandwich or stairs, but you still have to notice the risks before going for that GTR especially on higher floors. The rewards for taking that risk is a clean transition to floor 3 which is sometimes harder when your "floor" for floor 2 is uneven. Like you said: Know your fundamental chaining forms. It'll be a pain to unlearn bad habits if you take the game seriously in the future.

I treat GTR as just the natural conclusion of anyone trying to optimise their chain. But this is more out of my personal experience with it. I at first really tried to freestyle my chains, until I reached the point (basically by looking at competitive Puyo information) that I was doing GTR without even trying.

I actually started playing this game more recently trying to wanting to learn 10-chains, I was only able to get 5-chains consistently using sandwiching and stairs. It wasn't till recently I started implementing GTR into my board that I started getting at least some 7-chains but they're still really tricky, there's a lot of things to consider while using this form like the color combos, I find that even with this form there's still so much free forming or stuff you got to be able to improvise a lot on the RNG and it really is just a REALLY small part of the game
@crazycanyon3028

I’m trying to get 7 or more chains consistently before I actually leave the pure free styling approach with occasional stairs if it presents itself though I should probably step outside my comfort zone and play online more often if I want to really deepen my understanding of puyo before thinking about learning chaining techniques
@JRBetaAlpha
@JRBetaAlpha 8 ай бұрын
@crazycanyon3028 That definitely helps, especially since that's like half the fun in puyo, too, with free styling. I somehow got consistent with pulling 9-10 chains in Puyo Puyo, but I still gotta build these chains a little faster 😓. It's definitely a big improvement in three months. Here's to hoping your journey with the game continues as well!

I could really use some polishing to do on Puyo Puyo. I had been learning a bit of the setups ever since I got my hands of Puyo Puyo.....2 on the Sega 3D Classics Collection. I was actually looking forward to learning bits of Puyo ever since the Puyo Puyo Tetris English localization days. I'm mostly a Tetris guy (knowing useful stuff like Perfect Clear Opener to T-spin setups that I had memories using them to screw my friends over lol) but that Swap mode does want me to get my hands on Puyo Puyo. It's nice to see how this vid encourages learning the basics of puyo like learning how to build chains before attempting to learn GTR. While I can give myself sometime to learn how to build chains when I do have free time to research, I still have no idea how to even build proper chains to begin with before watching this video. that being said, i am definitely one of the people that knew nothing about puyo anyways and still stuck around to the end. you're welcome lol (But hey, this gives this vid a replay value for me once I DO get my head warped into Puyo Puyo. That and potentially Shenaningans since I ended up re-watching those lately)

4:00 it's actually very possible for that to happen in some games, like Tsu (at least in the arcade version)
@SchoellScrub
@SchoellScrub 3 ай бұрын
True but it’s very version and context dependent and I’m talking in the context of the modern Puyo games in a versus scenario generally. Even in Tsu’s multiplayer mode it decides the first 2 pieces before you can set the spiciness value so it sets it to sweet on the first 2 pieces meaning you can only see 3 different colors within the first 2 pieces. Where you can see it in Tsu is in story mode where the spiciness level is determined before the pieces are loaded and you can’t select or modify the ruleset which is why you can see 4 different colors on floor 2 and above.

I theoretically could, I just think that there’d be a lot less to talk about the forms and it would focus more on the mini-guide aspect and I’m not sure how interesting of a video it would be. Like I’d absolutely love to maybe talk about L-Shape at some point but that’s because of my inherent adoration for the form, and I don’t have the expertise with others, but I could do some research of my own like I did with this one.

i think that a puyo puyo x persona series crossover could be quite neat since: it could allow for lidelle considering draco her sister, less for appearances, but more because she never had a family, with draco being the closest, (if not confirmed to be her in-blood sister) to a genuine familiar bond. amitie cuestioning if magic can bring joy, since she usually uses it for friendly clashes of power, who's to say, if she's casted out by the world, or tempted by a lust for power, would she use the darkness of her own gifted magic to make them pay, or stay by her creed. sig having to face the past, or lack of it, that made him almost apatethic, being to silent and stoic for his own good (a different light for his mind in the clouds-like deadpan, dead inside, behavior) what made ecolo... the crazy psychotic sadistic powered freak. the mental battle schezo constantly faces, between himself and his lust for power. what made lemres the man he is, is he genuinely kind with children because he cares... or by something that became to much for him to bear the guilt from. if arle remembers the old world... and what she truly bears. squares and marle's fear of someone taking away humanity's free will, and how it could potentially be themselves the greatest of evil. what incites draco to fight, pride, envy, or the feeling of being to weak to defend those who she cares for. many ideas born and forged, through the shadow, the true self... and the creed of all persona wielders who fight the darkness: "i am thou, thou art I"

also considering the scenario, it couldd lead to this: (keep in mind, lidelle and ringo already awakened to their personas: fa-mulan and artemis godess of hunt, respectively) amitie: i learned new tricks... whos's to say i could win today. raffina: those personas might seem powerful, but my fist will be the one to TALk!! arle: bring it on, ringo and lidelle... and makoto and ryuji ringo and lidelle: well... IT'S ON!! (before arle, raffina and amitie could even launch their 15-chain spell) ryuji: heh, zap them off board, kidd... ZIODYNE!! captain kidd proceeds to paralize our dear trio makoto: just in case... she heals everyone. lidelle: whelp... on it!! fa-mulan, unleash the dragon's roar!! a dragon, similar to mushu, roars mightly, and raffina, amitie, and arle simultaneously are assaulted by a great fear. ringo guards, not for caution... but to taunt. ringo: time to finish this, don't ya agree? ryuji: YEAH!! now we're talking... up to you makoto... baton pass 1 makoto: thanks... but a give it to lidelle baton pass 2 lidelle: straight to you ringo! baton pass 3 ringo: thanks... now, artemis, let's give them a taste of our new power... beastly BARRAGE!! artemis summoned from her sword, the spirit of a grizzly, which proudly readied his final assault to end the match. arle: just... raffi, ami and arle: incredible!!! the three are snapped out of their fear, kissing the floor on defeat. ryuji: wonderfully done ringo!! raffina: can i ask... what was THAT? lidelle: a simple baton pass on turn kill

I always struggle trying to build something off of GTR. I always feel like I'm more consistent doing a sandwich opener. Especially because with some smart building and a touch of good RNG, the second floor is a mostly level surface, which makes it easier to build there. That said, the sandwich opener can be a bit inconsistent if you get bad pieces, whereas GTR is very easy and consistent. Decisions, decisions...

@SchoellScrub
@SchoellScrub 3 ай бұрын
You kinda just answered your own question, people do GTR on the left side BECAUSE everyone else does it on the left and that’s how many learn the form. It’s mostly down to personal preference on what side you want to build it on. The only real difference is negligible and that’s the position of the X that tops out your board. You could argue building on the right is safer because of that, but really not by much. In that same vein you could argue that you have a little bit more room on the third floor of the chain to build so that’s just how it goes.

well, since i don't find you in kirby live radio, and want to showcase this as an idea: well here we go thomas oldfrey -the sinner of the old world. powers: knows the sins of everyone, and their trauma trigger cunningness worthy of a chessmaster snake-smooth tongue, and manipulation skills from cognitive research can learn any weapon from fighting their wielder... once nulification of purification and puyo spells... that are not born through the true self and revelious will of the user pyrokinesis criokinesis, psychic manipulation, mastery over light and darkness weaknesses: loses to persona users by point above, can be mind controlled, insta kill spells, a fellow servant in sin, star bullets, and someone who is worthy by his judgement to defeat him. a man of misterious origin whose past is unknown, but thanks to years of research and training in analitical psychology and manipulation of the collective unconcious allows him to be the wielder of erebus's soul, which he took from the eternally felled by the pink demon archfiend of nihilism incarnate, his mastery over everyone's sins allows him to break the will of any magical girl who stands in his way, he incites the darkness of who he fights, imprisoning them on a mental state of the perfect fusion between public persona, and true self which enforces a pay evil onto evil mentality, perfect for his crusade to conquer the magical worlds and bring, by his own power, divine justice and order.

Interesting video, great presentation. ~~I fit into the last category described at the end so I don't have much to contribute, but this was fun to follow through nonetheless~~
