A "hook" is a very common phrase in songwriting. If you want your songs to be catchy, you should make them "hooky." The "hook" is what "pulls" the listener into the song. All of this, most people can agree on. But if you actually approach a songwriter, they can often tell you if a song has a hook or not, but most might really struggle to actually DEFINE what a hook really is. So, that's what Logan Crockett, VP or Marketing for Full Circle Music, attempts to do in this video! After watching, it should be a little bit more clear exactly what a hook is and how you can use one in your songs.

Unlike fingerprints, hooks can be the same. For an example, take 'under pressure' by queen - the hook is the bass line at the start. Vanilla Ice took that hook and created 'ice, ice baby'. As a kid I would get excited that it was Vanilla Ice....as an adult it is the EXACT opposite, lol.

You know how you're hanging out talking with someone and there's music playing somewhere in the background and either you or the other person says "No, wait! wait! Usually at the end of the chorus is the power spot for the hook, but having hooks in every part of your song (verse, chorus, bridge, etc..) is what makes the whole song catchy and brings the listens back!

I thought a hook was where the song's going one way, and then suddenly the rythm switches up like a car shifting gear. The first time you hear it, it sends a tingle down your spine, and then everytime you hear that song again you're just waiting for it. The best example i can think of is that scene in Dumb & Dumber when they listening to Bohemian Rapsody by Queen. When the hook drops they all start headbanging.

Good question! A guitar riff or "lick" is generally a distinctive melody used as a lead part or in solos whereas a guitar hook is a melody that the song keeps returning to. However, I understand why you may question because the two are often used interchangeably by players.

A hook is well groomed periodic phrase that is burnt as a strong neuron pathway, often masked by a familiar reference and resonant with DNA hence ethnicity...not to be confused with 'Homok' which is a delicious Thai dish :-)

A hook is what makes me dislike most modern pop music. It's usually just a single syllable or a couple notes repeated over and over again. Sure it's catchy, but its also annoying as hell. "Umbrella ella ella ella eh eh eh eh eh eh" Memorable and enjoyable are not the same thing.
