Our ocean is an awe-inspiring ecosystem that covers two thirds of our planet and provides us with food, energy, and also protects us from the impacts of climate change and extreme weather. But the ocean and its inhabitants are in peril.
Marine protected areas are ocean sanctuaries, protected by law with the aim of providing a safe haven for species and habitats.
In this video, we hear from Sean about our mission to fully protect at least a third of UK seas by 2030. By protecting our beautiful ocean, we’re providing long term benefits for all.
Everyone has the power to make a difference to ocean recovery, that’s why we launched the Ocean Hero campaign in partnership with Sky Ocean Rescue. There are lots of ways you can get involved and make a difference.

The issue we have in the UKCS is not declining populations of fish, its exactly the opposite. We have too much fish and not enough feed in the sea to support it. You only have to do a scale test on a Haddock to find that Haddock in the North Sea are seriously underweight. A four year old Haddock in Iceland weighs between 1.5 and 2 kilos. A four year old North Sea Haddock weigh between 400 and 500 grams. The decommissioning of hundreds of UK and European Fishing vessels, along with drastic quota cuts in the last 20 years has led to fish populations spiraling out of control. The base chain of feed in the North Sea starts with Phytoplankton, a microscopic Plankton that depends on Sunlight, much in the same way as the leaves on trees depend on sunlight. They are the food that bigger Plankton depend on which small fish then feed on and then bigger fish feed on them etc etc. When you have too many of one species in the chain, which is the case with Haddock, the whole chain breaks down. All your doing with creating MPA's and stopping fishermen from fishing is accelerating the destruction of fish stocks in the North Sea. Fishermen ARE the custodians of the sea, you guys need realize this. Fish are starving, eventually they will be come infertile and stop spawning. Then you will have a real problem on your hands. And by the way, unlike the so called scientific advisers you claim to have, I worked in fisheries and marine science for almost 40 years. I actually do know what I'm talking about.
