What is a Navy Nuke?

Recruiters don't recieve a bonus for putting in a nuke. Nuke is just the Navy's highest priority because 40% of the fleet is nuclear powered and it is the most difficult rate to qualify for. The pipeline isn't credited by MIT, but the school was created in conjunction with MIT. Also the credits don't come from any particular college they are recorded on the Joint Service Transcripts. Also you get automatically promoted to e-4 after a-school, then the first third is after power school and then the last two thirds after prototype.

Great info for sure, I’d love to learn more about what rates transition into what fields outside of the navy, specifically which rates would help the most with pursuing a career in a nuclear power plant

Typically ETNs have better job opportunities in nuclear power when they separate. All nuclear rates certainly have many options in civilian nuclear power but ETNs hold the prerequisites for most nuclear plants (operate control rods for X number of years).

Great videos Doug! Very helpful for my son and his parents to navigate the opportunity. I was a CTI in the 90s and DLI was tough, but our training pipeline is/was straight-forward in comparison. Until watching your videos, I felt ill equipped to help my son with meaningful guidance outside of recruitment and RTC. Great content on the Sub Volunteer opportunity and how to time that election to maximize the benefit. You mention all NUCs go to RTC as an E3 (my son's recruiter said the same). As you describe advancement after A School graduation to E4, I have begun to doubt my son's recruiter a bit on a couple of points regarding some of the nuances specific to the NUC program, and I hope you can help to clarify these. My son is joining the Navy with one of his teammates from CC and Swim Team and his recruiter designated my son as qualifying for a referral program for introducing his teammate to the recruiter. The recruiter has told us that my son will achieve another early advancement step in RTC and leave Bootcamp as an E4. After watching your videos, I suspect this may not be the case for NUCs and I hope you can help clarify this for us. Additionally, what if he is selected to be RCPO during bootcamp? I received an early advancement step coming out of Bootcamp for this, but again, I suspect it might be different for NUCs. Any thoughts?

Honestly I’m not as familiar with the programs you mentioned and have not met anyone that’s done. That’s not to say it’s not possible but I will certainly see if I can find out for you.

Thanks for your service! My cousin was nuke electrician in early 1970’s. Is it true nuke school is not as hard as years ago? I’ve heard the Navy has a lot of experience with nuclear energy and now it’s more about managing system within defined limits.

Hello there, I’m currently studying to pass my PiCAT but the recruiter told me when I go to MEPS to sign a temporary job placement so that when they finish with the background check/ security clearance they can hand me a nuke package? I went on Reddit and saw that for other rates it’s not like that but for nuke it is due to the security clearance needed for the job. I’m also a Cuban descendant, both of my parents were born in Cuba, so my recruiter told me it could delay me getting a contract as well. Is any of this false or is it true that it will take me longer to enlist and should I sign that temporary job contract ? Thank you so much for the video

I know several women who have become Nukes. Women have most of the same opportunities. It’s a little bit harder for a female to sub volunteer but many do. With the Virginia class subs we are equipped to support females so the opportunities are growing. As an officer, the opportunities are the exact same as the males. I can certainly make a video explaining more if it would be beneficial

What about if you were looking to advance to officer after your pipeline? Would it be possible as an ET or more likely as the other two?

The possiblities for officer programs would be through either the sta-21 program or through the naval academy. And the rate doesn't really affect your chances its more of your performance in school and the navy. For both of those progams the pickup rate of those that apply in the pipeline is approximately 50-60%. Additionally for sta-21 approximately 79% of the people who were picked up in this most recent cycle were nukes. Hope this helps
