(In case other people didnt know.) You can really help out your pet parrot with the pin feathers it can't reach, especially the back of their head and their face. If the pin feathers stay too long and become stuck, it can cause the poor birdie lots of discomfort and can even cause feather loss! If you have 2 or more parrots at home (and they get along 😅), then they will help each other out when it comes to releasing pin feathers. Also! If you want less keratin dust in your house, give your parrot a good misting in the shower it makes it way less dusty, and plus, most parrots LOVE a good wash 😂❤

IT IS!! I used to rescue exotic birds from abusive or neglectful situations and one of the ways I would really bond with them was preening. It was soothing for me and a gesture of love for them.

Not to mention whenever they dry up and the feather is fully out, it can actually be kinda itchy to the parrot which is why they are always preening themselves. And sometimes there are parts they cannot reach which is why they help preen one another. And if you have a good relationship with your parrot, they actually will greatly appreciate you helping them reach the parts they can’t get as it is also a type of friendship building moment

Nope. I have a skin picking problem, and I have a parrot. I've kept parrots for years and I love getting the new feathers. The problem is your bird doesn't want or tolerate the amount of preening from you that will satisfy your need to stim. I constantly have bite wounds in various stages of healing all over my hands because it is so hard to stop when the bird says stop.

I second this! Of course, people shouldn't get a bird as a primary solution and everything. But if you already have one, this is absolutely helpful. My birds loved that I would preen them as soon as they asked, because they are a little dumdum and don't understand preening each other. And for me, it hit just the right spot and kept the skin picking down (in addition to my other tools obviously)

Mum had a African grey back in the late 90s, a rescued bird , the powder was everywhere constantly!. She was sneaky, i had her for around 6 months, her cage was left open in my house when i was out all day, for months I'd get home and praise her for not damaging anything, and she'd always be sitting on her perch above the cage when i got home,then i found a single little poop half way up my stairs 😮 my imagination ran wild with what she must have been doing whilst i was out all that time 😂 she was a stroppy thing at times,and always put her beak resting against the metal cage,then clicked her beak making the whole metal cage vibrate,always when talking to someone, or watching/ playing favourite shows or playing games..she knew exactly what she was doing!, the young Rook i had as a rescue was far more intelligent though, and no where near as annoying 😅

I remember reading about pin feathers when I first got birds. That's why birds give each other times for preening. I just never saw it so clearly because I have tiny birds. I'm glad I got to see this and for you telling me about the blood. Now I know that if they preen themselves, that might be a worry I can calm myself from sooner.
