What is a Regional Orchestra?

In my years I have found it very difficult to even get an audition with a regional or community orchestra. The flute sections are often locked up with two or three flute players who have been playing there forever and don't have any plans of leaving anytime soon. This was my experience many many years ago with a community orchestra that I wanted to get into. I contacted the administration office, and then my name and contact info was discarded until about a year later when I received a call from the conductor who was outraged that I was brushed off by the personnel manager. The conductor invited me to play for their committee, I was accepted but then had to split the principal chair with the daughter of the outgoing principal flute. It was a cordial arrangement but I never truly felt welcomed, and eventually I resigned.

@@michaelschonauer7238 unfortunately, that sounds like a common scenario for community orchestras. Especially for flutes, bc there are so many of us. For regional orchestras, you have to make yourself known to the Principal flute, usually play for them or do some kind of audition to get on the sub list. Then you wait and hope to be called.
