But the light goes in perfectly straight line. Usually it's not a cloud casting that but for example a mountain. So you need a lower area, like a plains or ocean. Then you need a tall mountain. The sun is setting, and when it's at the horizon it's lower than the mountain top, so it hits the top of the mountain from below. That casts a shadow of the mountain top on the cloud layer. For example that often happens in Washington with Mt. Rainier. Just search on the interinet for "mt. rainier shadow".
