The underdog already has the lead for example 49ers play the panthers and it’s 16.5 spread and u pick the panthers they either win outright or lose 16 or less. Ur taking the points bc the 49ers need to score a lot more to cover the panthers are already ahead they have a 16.5 points already

“Giving points” you are the favorite for example like this Sunday the 49ers play Arizona and the 49ers obviously are much better they are “giving” 13.5 points let’s say u bet this game. The line is 49ers (-13.5) or cards (+13.5). Realistically the game hasn’t started it’s 0-0 but if ur betting technically the cardinals are already winning by 13.5 the cardinals get the points and the 49ers give the points. Think abt it bet the 49ers let’s say they need to catch up to 14 points to “cover the spread”
