Thank you so much, Pastor Matt, for your kind email response to my question and for this additional and very helpful youtube. I had already written down the names of your 5 favorite thologians and am beginning my pursuit of reading and studying them. I'm also in the process of reading Packer's book A Quest for Godliness. And I have always loved processing through systematic theology books because I am serious about maintaining a sound foundation in the truth of God's Word. I lead an adult Women's SS class and several Bible studies and pray that the Church of Jesus Christ will grow in maturity, sound doctrine and live in the joy of His living presence! There is nothing more exciting than seeing heavenly light bulbs ignite as the Holy Spirit reveals truth to His people! God bless your generous ministry as you serve our glorious Lord. Just study the Bible. I’ve been studying under Arnold Murray and on my own and people call me a theologian. Try watching atheist vs Christian debates and learn predestination from Arnold Murray so you understand the Beginning better.

I explain what a theologian does like this: They primarily explain away a clear and simple reading of Scripture. Example - "He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned." - Mark 16:16. Another example: "The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us..." - 1 Peter 3:21 Theologian: Nowhere in the Bible does it say you have to be baptized to be saved.

That's a pretty unfair assessment of an entire group of people. There are certainly theologians who get it wrong, but most theologians wouldn't argue what you've stated. It might be difficult to register, but it does happen that people are frequently left with questions, even after attempting "plain reading". I won't speak for all who have studied theology, but I've often been struck by the desire to have a plain and simple understanding of scripture gifted to me (and there are elements of it that, praise God, have been) but when I was left with deep questions after a faithful reading of the text I believe it was the honest, and I would argue faithful thing to do to inquire... i.e. practice theology. So, if I can argue your critique: it's not the theologian who needlessly distorts things, it's the man who engages with God's Word without fear and trembling, but instead goes into it brazenly, seeking to fulfill his own desires, rather than submit to God. That's not a condition universal to theologians, however.

Unfortunately, I’ve found myself in an environment where most people around me haven’t quite understood the concept of systematic theology and so many had thumbed their nose at the idea, thinking it to be some “liberal scholar” thing To combat this idea, I once robbed an illustration from Paul Washer but repurposed it. I told a group that I was going to prove that every single one of them is a theologian. I told them to take a deep breath in and out. Then, I asked them, “Theologically speaking, Who gave you that breath?” And then I said, “if your answer was ‘God’, then you have the basis for knowing of God and are a theologian.” (In the context that Paul Washer used it, he was telling young aspiring theologians that they can do nothing of their own and are utterly dependent on God, but I used it to hopefully motivate people to aspire to a deeper level of service to God) Sure, it’s oversimplified and could mislead someone to thinking that doing solid theology isn’t hard work or that formalized Biblical education isn’t useful, but I do truly hope that some in that group saw their affection towards theologians/systematic theology change

Theologians never wanted to and still don't want to lose power over the mentalities of their "flocks." Imagine how different the world would be … if men of ancient times, rather than claiming the lofty title of theologian … had said … “We don’t have any answers. All we have are questions.” From the book … Brewer’s Dictionary of Phrase & Fable by Ivor H. Evans … First published 1817. … Odium theologicum (o di um the o loj ikim) (Lat.). The bitter hatred of rival theologians. No wars so sanguinary as holy wars; no persecutions so relentless as religious persecutions; no hatred so bitter as theological hatred.

You don't *become* a theologian. For crying out loud, you are named one many years after you're dead by the church.
