What is a velomobile?
A velomobile is a human powered vehicle. Basically it's fully faired recumbent trike or quad. Velomobiles are very aerodynamic and that's why these things are faster than regular bikes. The seating position is very comfortable compared to upright bike and you are protected from weather. Velomobiles have usually very good luggage space for your grocery shoppings or camping gear. Velomobiles are great vehicles for commuting and touring. It's very easy and comfortable to ride long distances.

Excellent review for "beginners"....I liked especially the view from the top of the interior, you can really understand the structure and how the "bike" parts fit with the rest 👍

Thanks, I was looking for such an explanation of this awkward thing! 😂 First time I saw it in when I moved to Germany, scared to death as I thought that thing was riding autonomously and there was nobody inside (it looks quite small for a human to be inside). Now I want one too! 😁

12kg is already fairly light for an upright Bicycle, isn't it? 🙈 I 've driven 30kg upright bicycle, too - but they were cargo bikes 🤣 The only velomobile I've driven yet ist a WAW with a lot of heavy options so it was in the high 30s and it seemed alright. Will be interessted in testing one of the high end speed VMs at closer to 20kg! 😮

Thanks Saukki, you answered some of my basic stupid questions I have had about velomobiles in this video. But there's one thing that you didn't seem to cover: what about steering? There seem to be lots of different styles of steering controls to velomobiles. Maybe you could do (or maybe you have done and I haven't found it yet?) a video on different steering, breaking and gearing controls for various velomobiles?

Sauki, get yourself a tent and some gear, review the gear. Post a link and get a small commision, camping with velo. Also try to film other excursions....to a neat store, historic area, topless beach.

Do you still have your standard open recumbent bike? Perhaps better in snow because the Quest is quite close to the ground. I was also wondering if you use SPD or Look clipless peddles? I'm originally from Denmark where all kinds of bike are very popular, it's also quite flat there. Back in the 60s we did get snow for about 10 weeks. But less now. In southern England (my home now) snow is rare. At most a few weeks. How long is your snow period in Finland? I know it can get very cold. Thanks for all you do to tell people about recumbent biks & Velomobiles. It's a great source of information.

I still have my Azub Max. I use it as a gravel and winter bike. On Azub I have SPD pedals, on Quest I have Favero Assioma power meter pedals which uses Look compatible cleats. This part in Finland we usually have about four months of snow. Sometimes more, sometimes less.

You could probably build a solar-powered fan to keep the driver cool.

You should already have a battery for lights, indicators, horn. Probably 12V. That would be perfect to drive computer fans. Those come in a lot if sizes and powers. (4cm to 23cm or maybe bigger) Maybe a slightly bigger battery would be nice then. (Probably cheaper and lighter than Solar)

Yes the space for luggage is a bit stingie - tight - poor on the 3 wheeled version. I do have one coming as as i can finish it. it's not a Quest - it's home made but I have a good engineer on it with me now.

If it weights 30 kg it must be very hard to ride uphill? And how do you lock your bike?
@TheVelomobileChannel
@TheVelomobileChannel 4 жыл бұрын
Only if the uphill is long enoug. And even then it depends on how hard you want to make it. But on long uphills velomobiles are slower than lighter upright bikes. On short uphills velomobile is faster because of more momentum. This is how I lock my velomobile: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qWSpk2iOorSpecU
@PsyKeks

I tested one in the upper 30s and with barely any chance to get speed beforehand, I got over a bridge that crosses a highway and on the top I still had 20km/h ("kph") Velomobiles are fast because of aerodynamics. Also energy is proportional to hight linearly and to speed by square. So if you can drive twice as fast, you should roll up four times as high, I think. But yes: On long, steep climbs they are a lot of work. There are models at little over 20kg and you can use electric assist, if you live in the mountains.

Yes but you're pretty much limited to good road only? Any off road is out of the question looking at the design.. That is where the regular bike trumps in practicality..
@TheVelomobileChannel

Yes, that’s true. But I’m lucky to live in a society which builds smooth roads for cars, so there’s a lot of good roads around to ride with a velomobile.

@Juanitablau
@Juanitablau 4 жыл бұрын
No it's not. A velomobile has brakes and a drivetrain and can actually be used for commuting and touring. All things a soapbox doesn't have and can't be used for. A soapbox is a fun toy to run down a slope, but a velomobile is a serious alternative means of transport......
