Good explanation, Joe, thanks. One minor point, I think, is that the correct wording at 6:25 is "damping", not "dampENing". "Dampening" refers to making something wet, where "damping" refers to reducing oscillations. That's why it's called a Yaw Damper, instead of a Yaw Dampener. Sorry, just a picky engineer here.

EBD (Electronic Brake Distributor) also acts like YD when braking. if the car pulls to one side veering off the straight line, accelerometers quickly send signals to the ECU to release braking actuation on the opposite side thus bringing the car back onto the straight line.

So the Yaw Damper is active all the time? Even during landing? Especially strong crosswind landings? As a small plane pilot I cannot really imagine how that „interference“ would feel and probably mess up my landing totally.

The yaw damper makes it unnecessary to manipulate the rudder pedals to coordinate roll and yaw when turning, correct? When I started flight simming I spent a bunch of money on good rudder pedals, but now that I fly airliners exclusively I only need them for the brakes and maintaining centerline on takeoff and landing (I built my own tiller for taxiing).

I don't know if this topic is to hot for you: On 9/11 there was a crosswind. The "pilots" could compensate the crosswind and made a perfect 90 degree impact. This results in the known roll-angle of the planes that you can see on every impact photo. My questions: 1. Could an unexpierenced pilot do that? 2. Why did they do that? For an attack the impact angle should not play a role. It would only play a role ift you want to minimize the wreckage parts in the streets of NY. In my opinion shows this, that the planes are controlled by an expierenced pilot or an automatic system. Is there any automatic system (maybe the yaw damper) that could compensate the crosswind in this way? Thank you.

One remark on the bicycle analogy. To "steer into it" you'd move the handlebar in the opposite direction as shown at time 3:21 in the video. If you experience crosswind from the right you'd push on the right hand side end of your bike's handlebars. The wheels then will follow a strive to the left and due to inertia you and your bike will lean over to the right into your crosswind and compensate that. And, one more: Famous for ventral fins, or "fish fins" are e.g. the Learjet models and also the famous F-16. Thanks for damping my "yawn" ;-)
@mytech677916 сағат бұрын
And the X-15 which needed to jettison the large ventral skeg before landing.

Right rudder pedal moves rudder (and nose of plane) to right or vice versa?
@rwalkenhorst15 сағат бұрын
Pushing the right pedal forward points the plane to the right. Very hard for newbies to get used to because with a steering wheel or handlebars, if you push on the right side it turns you to the left. Edit: I wonder whose idea it was to make it that way. Maybe Captain Joe knows.
@SVanHutten13 сағат бұрын
@@rwalkenhorst It makes sense as the pedals (usually) also act on the brakes. Pushing the right pedal brakes right wheel, so the plane turns right. But it would be interesting to know the origin of this convention.

When gliders or ultralight pilots visit my simulator cockpit, I always have to remember to explain about the yaw damper, otherwise we get such funny/exciting landings. These pilots use the rudder pedals very actively. Yaw damper do the job in most cases for the commercial pilot, so no need for heavy rudder movement
