I have found that when I read something and write it I can retain it more better than I just hear it. I remember things better from discussing in Discussion groups also.

This is GREAT! I don’t need to take out a $60,000 loan to go to university. We can just stay home, get into pairs, and do active learning.

I am in favor of instruction being evidence-based. I believe that there is a substantial amount of research that supports the use of active learning. Unfortunately, I am highly disappointed by the video. It is a necessary element in an academic paper or presentation that when you use “research” to support your point, the author discloses the actual source of the resech/paper/ or publication that is being referenced. In this case, the speaker refers to research “research shows...” however fails to source the information. So it is unclear if he is referring to multiple studies or reaching the conclusions from just the “learning pyramid.” The problem with the “learning pyramid” is that this is fake information, not actual research. This appears to be the result of secondary sourcing, meaning it appears that the author just searched google for his image however did not actually look at any research as he suggests since a study does not actually exist. It is not helpful to share research that does not exist; this negatively affects instructors and their understanding of learning. Here are a few references that would be helpful to understand the topic.

Active learning HAS TO be more effective. Without all the research, we've all heard stories of some 7 or 8 year old who drove to school, down the street, or to a neighbor's house without ever READING a drivers manual, simply because they ACTually drove in a video game. Doing/action causes us to remember.

If active learning is "something other than straight lecture", then all current formal instruction is active learning. Straight lecture is never used alone in education. Why aren't reading and listening "doing something"? Saying that students must process information in specific ways simply assumes the goal. The actual issue is about how to promote such processing. The numbers giving percentages of what student's retain is well known misinformation that is supported by no research whatsoever. Overall, I have to wonder what motivates someone to create and post such misinformation. Active learning is basically smoke and mirrors used by people who want simple answers, or justification for their ideology.
