One more thing about scoring - sometimes one team will kick the ball through their opponents goals, as they see it as less risky than allowing the opponent to take possession of the ball and get a goal. This is worth one point and is called a “rushed behind”. Oh, and any catch that a player takes where the ball has travelled 15m or more, is called a “mark” not just when a player has to jump up high/on the other player’s shoulders. But those “marks” are often called “specky’s” meaning spectacular mark.

To score a goal the ball must cross the line untouched by anyone from a kick. There are no "own goals" and defenders (any opposing player) will attempt to at least touch the ball if they can't stop it before it crosses the line. As mentioned in previous comments this means only 1 point is scored but the essential thing to keep in mind is that the attacking side misses scoring the additional 5 points. It is also mentioned elsewhere that the defending team win possession of the ball back from their own goal square. Draws are rare events. Sometimes a whole season can be played without a draw occurring. No team celebrates a draw but rather regard it as a win that got away. I think this validates the value of "behinds". See if you can find footage of a player named Tony Lockett who kicked a point after the final siren to put his team into a Grand Final. After two hours it came down to that kick.
@MOEhock3 жыл бұрын
I consider the scoring to be one point between the point posts with an extra five in the narrower central goal posts. Also to score thos five points it has to come from the boot of the attacking side, anything else, touched by attackers hand or any defender and it's only a point.

Melburnians are the most sport crazy of any Aussies. I think the Melbourne Cricket Ground (also called the Gee) still holds the world record for the biggest crowd for a weekend club game. AFL is played on a cricket pitch. That's why the pitch is so big. Australian Rules Football was developed in the late 1800s (it was codified as a sport before Gaelic football) to keep the Australian cricket team fit over winter. AFL is more popular in southern states like Victoria and South Australia rather than northern states like New South Wales and Queensland where Rugby League is more popular. Don, you should check out State of Origin Rugby League matches between New South Wales and Queensland. Bloody brutal. Apparently the toughest contact pitch sport games on the planet. Australia will send an Aussie Rules team to Ireland to play Gaelic Football against the Irish and the Irish will send a Gaelic Football team to Australia to play Aussie Rules. Sheer madness.

points are important. anyone can stop a score. it is the 4th highest domestic sport attendance worldwide. If it's touched by any player as it goes through the goals.. it's 1 point.. Stopping the ball as they kick is called a smother. If U get tackled and don't dispose of the ball with a handball or kick.. it's a free kick.. If U push in the back or hold your opponent when they don't have the ball, free kick.. If U backchat the ref or hit someone illegally, 50m penalty. If it hits the small posts, no score, out of bounds.

The reason you get a point when missing the goal, is it allows a result at the end of the game; a point can be the difference between winning or losing a game, if both teams had equal ability only scoring goals may result in more drawn games.
@davehocking40914 жыл бұрын
The behind/point for missing works out nicely as a tiebreaker. If two teams finish on the same number of goals it generally works out that the team that attacked more will get the win. Draws are very rare. Yes anyone can stop the ball going for a goal in any way you like. If it touches another player it doesnt count as a goal. You'll often see a player deliberately tap the ball through the opposition goal (counts as a point for the other team) to ensure they dont give up a goal. I guess a bit like giving away a corner in soccer.
@gangstertopo4 жыл бұрын
There are some rules which haven't been highlighted in this video. Such as, a free kick is given to a player if they are forcefully pushed in the back in a contest, by an opposing player. Also, any high and low tackles will be awarded with a free kick. Free kicks are also awarded if a player being tackled cannot dispose of the ball, this is known as the holding the ball rule. There are also out of bounds rules. If the ball bounces over the line during play, the umpire throws the ball back in, and the ruck position players (those shown contesting the jump ball in the video) will contest for the ball. If the ball is kicked over the line on the full, without bouncing over, the opposing team then gets to bring the ball back into play. These same rules apply if the ball, hits the smaller post. Hitting the smaller posts result is in a boundary throw in, or kick in, just like the boundary rules, and not a score. After a behind (1 point) is kicked, the ball doesn't go back in the middle, as it would with a goal. Instead the defending player brings the ball back into play.

That is actually one of the criticisms some people have for Aussie Rules, that you get a point for missing. But they do come in handy as there aren't many draws in AFL and if there were no behinds, there would be plenty. Any player can stop the ball going through the goal and if they don't stop it completely but touch it on the way through, that also goes down as a behind and one point.

If the ball is touched by any part of the body of either teams players before it crosses the goal line, it becomes a point. Unless it touches the foot or below the knee of the scoring teams player. THere's no waiting your turn for a pass if its in your area you must attack it also if you "play the man" by focusing in tackiling you always wind up getting to the ball second therefore you don't control it and you'll wind up losing.

It's always great to see more people enjoying this game. To answer your question, yes, any player from the opposing team can try and stop the ball from crossing the goal line, and if they do manage to touch it before it goes across it's only worth 1 point, not 6. I'm a Brisbane Lions fan, and they're doing quite well this season with a young team. We're going to make finals for the first time in 10 years. Great video mate! It’s an awesome game and really fun to play and watch. On your note of the behind, I saw some other comments give you the idea of how they are regarded but they also add more variety in the score line and cause less drawn match’s. Yet draws still occur on occasion. The 2010 grand final was arguably the most famous draw to date and eventually led to the league to change the rules as to what happens if a grand final ends in a draw. In 2010 they played a rematch a week later. Now they would do 10 minutes of extra time. If it’s still a draw then they do first team to score (goal or behind). However during the regular season draws end as draws. If you ever find yourself in Australia I highly recommend seeing a game first hand. Then you can truly appreciate all the aspects of the game. Through the centre posts off of anything other than an attacking players leg, below the knee. is 1 point. You say that rugby scoring is better but how do you explain that a penalty kick through the uprights is worth 3 points and yet a conversion kick, which is no more or less difficult, is only worth 2 points?

If the opposition (the other team wants to stop you touching it), touches the ball before it goes through the big sticks than it becomes 1 point instead of 6. Once a point (a miss) is scored the other team has to kick it back in from between the big sticks (the goal) and has to try to clear it out, all the way to their goal.
@TheDonsChannel5 жыл бұрын
So it is crucial to try and touch it, really. 1 point lost and you get control of the ball..

@williamathanasakis77645 жыл бұрын
If the ball is touched on the way through to the goal by anything but an 'attacking player's' leg, it is considered a 'rushed behind'. This is the case if a defensive player touches the ball on its way through to the goal (which is usually the objective as opposed to preventing it from going over the line entirely). A 'rushed behind' is no different to a behind, both counting for 1 point.

Glad you liked it. 2019 Grand Final had 100,014 fans at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). Any player can stop it before it goes over the line. If the opposition touches it on its way thru the big sticks, it's only 1 point also. Richmond Tigers are my team - they easily won the GF this year!

Any opposition player can try and prevent the ball going into the goal, but it is usually a defender. The opposition sometimes run it through the goal and it then scores a point for the other team. They would rather the other team score 1 point than six but only do it if they have no choice generally.

Any player can go anywhere and play any role they wish, the full back (deepest defender) can take the ball from the goal he is defending right up the other end and score a goal if he wants to, he just has to figure out how to get past 18 players trying to tackle him and a coach screaming at him for leaving his position. The full forward (striker) can even drop back and defend if he wants to again the coach won't like it. The scoring evens out when there is 6 dedicated defenders stopping you from catching the ball or having a kick at goal and it gets even harder when the midfield drop into defence to flood the area, there really isn't much room to move or jump to catch the ball. A lot of scoring comes from midfielders creating space after a turnover. If you ever want a proper run down on how the game plays and rules or strategies of basic Gameplay contact me and I could debrief you as playing this sport for 10 years I could answer almost any question.

1stly I'm a HUGE AFL FAN!! However, you can't compare the two codes in relation to player abilities. AFL is not necessarily a more physical game than rugby, because they're two different types of physicality. You can play 80mins of an AFL game and not get tackled or even make a tackle = limted physical contact. However in rugby, the purpose is to make physical contact to create space. To purposely run into defenders = 20-50 tackles a game = high physical contact. No professional AFL player has ever played professional rugby. However, professionally in Australia, two rugby players have crossed to AFL. The high ball advantage you're talking about is relevant and essential to every AFL player, in rugby, its only highly essential to backs and not forwards (half the team). I could go on forever but its more of a conversation to have over a beer mate.

@@evanbrennan1848 And AFL was the VFL (Victorian Football League) originally. It remained in this format until 1982, when the South Melbourne Football Club relocated to Sydney.
