3:37 One little remark: 1296 MHz is in the middle of the UHF portion, not SHF! Nice calm video though, compliments!

Very interesting. Would love to see a video of how you use a small hand held and repeaters to get further distance. And also how to use the internet to extend range.

@mickhurley7305 I can certainly do that ... I'll get on it the next couple of days and post it up ... Great idea BTW, thank you 😊

Ah the foundation/introduction ticket, funnily enough loads of ops still using that one..... something I've never really understood in a self experimental hobby. Nice shack and a well explained introduction into radio.

Thanks for that , tbh I've never understood it and maybe I'm just being a cynic but a lot of foundation holders buy really REALLY expensive radios, are the 2 linked ? You tell me ? 😉

@@g0lzx 101D and a 1000 acom at a mates QTH and a M6 at that Ricky, no shame and it really does the hobby a injustice and themselves (sad). It is all online now, so easy to progress but nope not good enough. Oh well.

The funny thing is most of us QRP guys are full licence holders and we are the ones buying lower powered radios. Although my last one was 20w which is pushing it a bit for me. I have three 100w radios and they never get used at all. I do wonder if foundation had been available to me would I have just settled? Probably, even more so now it is 25w.

@@wonderingworld119 Well I own a qrp radio and it goes portable a Xiegu which makes things even harder as you know but that's the thrill. I also run QRO at home so I do dabble at both sides of the power fence, why are some foundation holders spending so much money on gear and the hobby but have no intention of progressing. Statistically now less are passing the M0 in the UK, the writing was on the wall when it went online but it's had the opposite effect and now with the power increase just another nail in the hobby regards keeping a good stock of full license holders. VHF isn't the same because most shoot off to HF and turn the wick up. Oh well that's my take and it's not meant to offend or push anyone out of the hobby, if the talk of progressing annoys anyone then it's them that have the issues. Technical hobby when I joined and it apparently still is.

@@LMGGPMG The days of RAE exams and 12wpm would see no one on HF now though. I would like to see Europe open up a little of the HF spectrum just for full licences. As far as QRP goes, I am a bit of a nut. Today I decided to turn the power right down to 1W and answer random CQs, SSB on 15. Didn't really expect to anyone to pick me out of the static. First try got a bloke in Italy. Not bad with an endfed wire that goes through my window and down to a fence post. Via a 9-1 and 1-1 before the internal tuner. Probably did not sound great to him but I was fist pumping.

Just a small thing ; you explained the origin of the word HAM (as in ham radio). As far as I've found online : The word “HAM” as applied to 1908 was the station CALL of the first amateur wireless station operated by some amateurs of the Harvard Radio Club. They were Albert S. Hyman, Bob Almy, and Poogie Murray. At first they called their station “HYMAN-ALMY-MURRAY”. I feel as that explanation just might be more accurate.
