Great info! I’d like to get my hands on a decent sized doublet cabochon to wire weave into a pendant. So, this video helped a lot. Thanks Roy! (Going down to -5 Celsius here tonight)

Pendant sized ones are harder to come by but still quite a few on opal auctions so good luck! 🤞

I haven’t seen many Doublets. It just wasn’t on my radar as an option for wire weaving. For the size I want, I basically thought an andamooka cabochon was my only option.
@RoysRocks3 жыл бұрын
Ah yeah a big matrix stone is pretty well suited for that but a nice big doublet may also work if that's the look you prefer.

I use two part epoxy glue called Araldite glue mixed with iron oxide powder to make it black for doublets.
@RoysRocks3 жыл бұрын
I use araldite for dopping but not for doublets. Epoxy 330 and black oxide or i find the liquid black epoxy dye pretty good as well. Some prefer the UV glue but I don't see the 330 age badly.

@@RoysRocks will have to try Epoxy 330. Thanks

Yeah these were from seda he had some nice doublets. He also prices his doublets and triplets quite well. I still wait for them to be reduced in price though 😊

I'll dig around in my boulder bags and see what I can find. Maybe I should finish the stripy boulder from a while back?

@@RoysRocks watching you with the rotary has got me using it much more now than I am polishing some boulder. Would love to see the stripy one finished, Nick has its sister stone for sale atm.Any news on the sintered burs?
@RoysRocks3 жыл бұрын
I still have that one sitting on my desk so yes I should finish it and see how it goes. The sintered burrs are in the post and I expect them this week or next depending on what covid is up to at the moment.

It's a nice looking piece. Thanks again for your information. It will save a lot of people from being unhappy. It is way better than triplet though. I am a bit of a purist, but I would be quite happy with that one. 👍. By the way, keep your hot weather. Stop sending it to me! Please..... 😂😂😂😂😂
@RoysRocks3 жыл бұрын
Yeah but far better than a triplet. At least it looks natural from the face. I reckon you have a heap of hot weather on the way. My shed is hitting 40 pretty often but I still opal away.

Not bad that's for sure. I'll use it to practise ring setting when the time comes. It also has a matching pair for earrings.

@@nancycurtis3230 Yeah I might set all three into a small silver pendant and earrings. When I do it'll be on the channel.

roy where do you get your iron stone or black potch
@RoysRocks2 жыл бұрын
From beginners parcels that dont work out 🤣 You can actually find a few miners that will just sell it for pennies. Normally they wouldn't but if you ask when you purchase something you might get some thrown in for free or for pennies. You can also substitute it for other materials like black obsidian some have even used black plastics though I dont like that so much.

What does the resin cured opal look like under a black light?
@RoysRocks2 жыл бұрын
That would depend on the type of opal and the type of resin. This one does still fluoresce as the layer of opal on top is still fluorescent.
