A light bulb isn't an isotropic radiator, because it has a lamp socket which creates a shadow above the lamp and the filament is also not an infinite small point and radiates more light on the side then on its ends. In fact isotropic radiators do not exist, they are just a theoretical construct. Anyway, that's just nitpicking. Everything said was correct and the explanation is a very good one! I use the light bulb analogy myself when I explain this to someone.

i used to explain to people that a lot of things in physic can be explain in other type of form using other material or physic to understand it easier. just like if you amp up the power way too much it doesn't really improve the signal as much compare to the antenna itself. it might disrupt the listener. i relate it to screaming. if someone talk normally you can hear the words clearly. but if you scream the words next to your ear, its harder to hear it clearly. in some case, giving too much power disrupt the quality of signal.

What about gain on an omni-directional antenna? You can buy a vertical antenna that is unity gain at 1/4 wavelength or one that is 3db gain at 5/8 wavelength. Is the 'gain' then less loss on the longer antenna? Is the 'gain' relative to a 1/4 wavelength antenna?
@SolwiseMD2 ай бұрын
"Unity gain" is just another way of saying 0dB gain, so a 3dB gain antenna would radiate a more powerful signal within it's effective window. The 1/4 and 5/8 wavelength references are about the trcks used to ensure that the antenna accepts the power from the transmitter rather than reflecting it it back up the wire whilst at the same time forming a suitable radiating pattern that gets the signal to it's recipients.
@paulschmitterk2pms52 ай бұрын
@@SolwiseMD I realize what unity gain is, but how can a omni-directional antenna actually have gain? Unless it is just referenced to a 1/4 wave antenna as having 0db gain. Antennas are passive devices, so how can they have gain? This video demonstrates a directional antenna where the total rf is being 'focused" in an ever increasingly narrow 'beam'.

Then how would we know by seeing the antenna that which side is it focusing its waves? Will the user need to put receiver antenna in same direction mandatorily as the transmitter antenna has gain in one direction!?
@SolwiseMD9 ай бұрын
Identifying Orientation: I'm not sure there is a generic answer to this question, antennas come in all shapes and sizes. If it is not obvious try searching for an arrow somewhere on the antenna, otherwise consult the manual. Selecting Orientation: If the link is point-to-point then the two antennas should be aimed at each other. For point-to-multipoint then the central antenna should be omnidirectional and each endpoint shoul be aimed at that. Hope that helps.

What do you mean when you say "3dbi = factor of 2" (at 1:43 sec). Can you please elaborate this more.
@allend4338 жыл бұрын
+Amit Jain I had the same question, I ended up doing research on Db (decibel). He uses the wrong term here when he says factor, as that implies multiplication. There is no multiplication involved here. The actual operation in play here is logarithmic. Consider a few things here. Db is comprised of a unit called "bels". the D in Db is from the term "deci", which implies the operation multiplication by 10. Furthermore, standard log operations have a base of 10. With that said, here is how 3 Db = 2: log(2) = x Written another way: 10^x = 2 solve for x I cannot solve this without a calculator, it should be about .3. x = 3 Db Therefore 3Db = 2 (technically log2)
@paulstephenson4868 жыл бұрын
Muliplication is definitely involved. The (deci)Bel scale is logarithmic in base10. That is to say that each Bel is a factor of 10. So adding 1 Bel is the same as multiplying by 10, Adding 2 Bels is the same as multiplying by 100. In practice, adding three tenths of a Bel is so close to multiplying by 2 that we think of them as equal.
@allend4338 жыл бұрын
+Paul Stephenson Thanks for clearing that up. I think he should have used the term "multiple of 2" instead of "factor of 2". Everything would have made sense from the first time I watched the video if he had phrased it that way. I realize that for people who have very intuitive math minds, these semantics are marginal. My understanding is much more rigid and perhaps a bit brittle. Side note, I recalled how to solve the logs by hand (been a while since i've done math). log(2)=x 10^x = 2 log(10^x) = log(2) xlog(10) = log(2) x = log(2)/log(10)

I don't get it. Does this have anything to do with my gain knob and if so, what is it doing?
@khmerann5 жыл бұрын
Very nice explanation. i still confuse the term "dBi" and "dBm", some wireless adapter state "
@SolwiseMD5 жыл бұрын
OK, dBi is a figure which expresses gain over an isotropic antenna (which has a gain of 0dB). dBm expresses a signal power compared to 1mW, so 100mW can be written as 20dBm. I think the video describes the units better than I can in words here. Now, your floors. My video shows operation in free space. Lets imagine the situation of our high gain parabolic light-bulb antenna which focusses all the available power into a pencil-thin beam. Point this out of your window and we might get our signal to the moon. Point it at the floor and we'll get our signal a far as the floor. This brings up two issues: 1. Will our signal go through the floor? Our light-bulb antenna will not penetrate the floor but how will your WiFi signals get on? Well, if your floor is made of concrete you can expect at least 20dB of loss passing through it. If your floors are made of wood and plasterboard expect a loss of 3 to 5dB. (But beware foil-lined plasterboard or insulation which will totally reflect the signal.) 2. What direction should we point our antennas? If we pointed our pencil thin beam of light across the street into our neighbour's window and it landed on his white-painted wall, it would probably illuminate his room quite effectively as the light scattered off his wall. Note that if his wall was painted black the situation would be very different. So the question is: How do our WiFi signals behave in this reflecting/scattering effect? Broadly speaking the effect is similar to light and also dependent on the materials (though not colour). 5GHz WiFi tends to reflect more than 2.4GHz. We should learn from these two effects that raising the gain of indoor antennas is usually fruitless unless we can predict the route the signals will take between the endpoints, which we usually can't. Paul Stephenson.

So what if you have a pole antenna that is 8dBi, is it going to be shooting a flat donut shape rather than a tall one?
@SolwiseMD3 жыл бұрын
Basically yes, though 'donut' would better describe the shape in the polar diagram. The radiating pattern itself will just keep getting wider (higher and lower) the further it gets away from the antenna. The angle depends on the gain. The higher the gain, the tighter the angle. You might get a better feel from my "Antenna Radiating Patterns Explained at kzbin.info/www/bejne/qqixh3ivn8d-iLs
@opaextreme92825 жыл бұрын
so, question, if an antenna is advertising 22db and another model is saying it/s 17.4dbi, which one has the stronger signal and I should buy for my house ? if the 22db didn't state i or d, then does that mean that you can't really give an answer, cause we don't know what that manufacturer is really saying about it's db gain ?
@SolwiseMD5 жыл бұрын
It's not easy to answer this question very well on the information you have provided but I'll have a bash. Firstly you don't say what you want the antenna for. I'm going to guess it is for a 4G data service and answer you qustion on that basis. Firstly 22dB is a very high number. It is a gain of over 100x. That means it will have a very narrow beam-like focus and be choosy about how accurately is is lined up with the mast. Unless you are in a very remote location, better to find something with a lower gain capable of also picking up reflected signals and other masts. This is likely to give better results. See my other video about radiating patters, kzbin.info/www/bejne/qqixh3ivn8d-iLs. OK. What if no units are specified such as 10dB where we might expect 10dBi? I guess generally we can assume if the gain is listed as 10dB we can assume they mean 10dBi. That said, I have frequently seen 10dB used to describe the front to back ratio, which isn't really a gain measurement at all. I've also seen grossly inflated figures claimed, effectively bare-faced lies. All I can really recommend is that you buy your antenna from a reputable source who will discuss your needs with you. I hope that is some help.

A Light bulb is an antenna. It radiates electromagnetic waves in the visual light part of the spectrum. I have increased it's gain by adding mirrors. A wall might work as a mirror in some parts of the em spectrum but I would suggest a mirror is easier to visualise.
