What is Banda Aceh like? I spend a couple of days exploring the provincial capital of Sumatra's Aceh province. This Indonesian city is well-known for its Sharia Law and religious conservatism, but I want to look a bit beyond that, exploring what there is to see and do here.

I'm Jason, a full-time British Travel Vlogger and KZbinr who's been to 61 countries. I've been travelling around the world full-time since 2017.
I have travel series' from many of the world's best (and least) known destinations. I filmed the first vlogs on my channel in the summer of 2016 after spending a year living in China. A proper solo trip around Eastern Europe followed after graduating from University in the summer of 2017, taking me to Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, North Macedonia and Kosovo. This marked the start of my efforts to turn vlogging into a full-time job.
After that European trip I explored much of Asia: visiting India, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Pakistan, the Philippines, South Korea and Kazakhstan.
I have also travelled to North Africa and the Middle East fairly extensively over the last five years, filming videos in Turkey, Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Israel and Palestine.
I've travelled to North America just once as a KZbinr, visiting Mexico in 2021. Though I have been to both the USA and Canada, this was as a child on family holidays.
In 2022, I took my first trip to Sub Saharan Africa, visiting Kenya and Tanzania, before heading to the Middle East, stopping in Dubai and Lebanon. Europe followed, covering both the Greek and Turkish sides of Cyprus, and afterwards going back to Italy for the second time to cover Milan and Sicily. I then visited the Caribbean for the first time, covering the Dominican Republic, before heading to both Brussels and Amsterdam, then covering Taiwan and the Philippines in Asia. I finished off the year with a trip around Morocco.
I started my travels in 2023 by finally visiting Paris, taking the Eurostar from London. I then headed over to Qatar for a few days, before heading to Asia, with videos following from India, Singapore, Taiwan, Japan, Mongolia, Thailand and Sumatra (Indonesia).

They just hate Aceh no matter what. the hate speech comes out easily every time someone put comment praises Aceh. Even when bad thing happens in Aceh such as nature disaster they be like "this is party time", so disgusting. it's a lot easier for you to find if you can speak bahasa Indonesia. Most of them hate Aceh because of the Sharia Law and separatist army of Aceh. they will never see any good in Aceh, everything is bad. one day you will know it.

Hello Jason, welcome to my hometown!. i've been following you since you traveled to Algeria and you are my favorite! unfortunately i watched your video ten days after you posted it, and i thought you had left Banda Aceh. even though i have a lot of recommended places for you to visit like the Aceh museum near the Mosque, traditional market, the dutch cemetery, the fishing village, the waterfall, and also don't forget Sabang Island, but im not worry because your video in Weh Island is already out now. If you go to banda aceh again, you have to go to these places. and you also haven't tried Mie Aceh (aceh noodles) with a big crab and lobster right? that means you have to go to Banda Aceh again to try it hahaha. btw, enjoy your days in Indonesia, have a good one Jason!

Jason, I’m glad that you get to have a local mosque experience, but in general I’d advise against going to one during prayer time. The Muslims have strict rules around praying that they have to follow, one of them is that it’s forbidden to walk in front of people who are praying which is why I got nervous watching you inside the mosque during Friday prayer. It’s actually a huge an offense that transgressors are subjected to… let’s say, very unsavory penalizing. This, along with other rules that only Muslims would know, is why mosques in Indonesia usually allow non-Muslims to enter, but not during prayer times. Indonesia is cool (even sharia-ruled Aceh) and foreigners would get away scot-free, but you might not get as lucky in stricter countries.
@QaasimBerbera-hw3kj
@QaasimBerbera-hw3kj 5 ай бұрын
There is no "unsavoury penalizing", you'll simply be blocked by the praying person with an arm if they notice in time. It happens all the time in mosques as you may not notice who is and isn't praying (this including voluntary, i.e sunnah prayers). This is the same in all Muslim countries, including "stricter" ones, people might get annoyed but that's as far as it goes. No idea where you get this idea of a penalty from. I would reiterate though your sentiment about double-checking prayer times and asking guides to show you around, people all over would be very welcoming to non-muslims in mosques simply because they assume you're interested in Islam from my experience.
@kilantravels
@kilantravels 5 ай бұрын
@@QaasimBerbera-hw3kj glad that you experience only a kinder version of the faith, but I stand with my warning to visitors and Muslims alike. You may ignore it if it doesn’t concern you, but those who are non the wiser needs to forewarned to avoid unknowingly offend those who adhere to a harsher interpretation of the belief: To cross in front of a person who is engaged in Salaah is impermissible and it is a grave sin to do so. The Prophet (ﷺ) states: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «لَوْ يَعْلَمُ المَارُّ بَيْنَ يَدَيِ المُصَلِّي مَاذَا عَلَيْهِ، لَكَانَ أَنْ يَقِفَ أَرْبَعِينَ خَيْرًا لَهُ مِنْ أَنْ يَمُرَّ بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ»(البخاري 510) “If the person who passes in front of another person in prayer knew the magnitude of his sin, he would prefer to wait for 40(days, months or years) rather than to pass in front of him.” (Bukhari, 510)

I’m aware of this - I didn’t walk in front of anyone during the prayer. I actually left just before they started. I sat down and listened to the Imam for about 20 minutes with everyone else. Though I appreciate your honesty and I’ll be careful next time.
@kilantravels
@kilantravels 5 ай бұрын
@@JasonBillamTravel glad that you’re aware of this. I’m just going to leave my comment here as a warning for others who don’t know Islam as well as you do, so they wouldn’t get the idea that’s it’s okay to walk around a mosque during prayer time. Please know that I have nothing personal against you or anything. I recently had to explain to an Indian tourist who was indignant about not being allowed into Balinese temples because as a Hindu he thought he had the right to demand to be let in. Cultural differences might create unnecessary frictions when visitors refuse to respect local cultures and sensibilities.

Indonesia is indeed a colorful country with its diversity ... you can come to a conversative place like Aceh, then to Bali where conservativeness could be intrepreted in different perspective based on the locals' belief system ... and this goes the same in many other parts of the country As Indonesian, we believe one thing, yes we all can experience/see lots of different cultures and traditions in this country, but always with one definite rule to follow everywhere we visit each place - the rule is 'When in Rome, Do as the Romans Do' 😁😁😁

Glad you visited Aceh. Btw it is allowed for you to come inside Masjid, I saw them before. I asked someone why was that? he said they are human being not unclean/excrement, ofcoz they can. I'm happy to know that. For men, it's more easier as long as you wear long pants but for girls they need to put scarf on. But I don't know what rules today. but as I know there were a lot white people (sorry have to say that) there when the tsunami so for them white people are not strangers. Feel free to be there, no need to be too scared or too careful that makes you uncomfortable. they are fun people, if you did unintentionally something not really appropriate, they will tell you. for better experience, make a friend with a local before you visit the city. you will find many places that are not on the travel map.

If you know them enough u might be able to get weed, like weed coffee. Pretty infamous in Indonesia to be the easiest place to find weed (though might be dangerous if got caught). Aceh put weed in all stuff supposedly because its the culture. Maybe one day, aceh will be the first province where they legalize weed.

@@Aksarallah well unlike what most published in western media what is practiced in Aceh is Qanun Jinayat inspired by Shariah but not the same. Also it depends on the use, at least that is according to the islamic council of Aceh which supported its use for medical uses.

Is it safe to visit with my gf? Can we eat together, share taxis and so on? It's not obvious whether the strict Shariah Laws apply to tourists or not...
@afnanfaris8071
@afnanfaris8071 2 күн бұрын
you can ask me everything, I will answer it as much as I know. Of course it is save, especially you are foreigners or non Muslim. as long as you don't do any " private thing" on public and dressing as Indonesian modesty standard (need to read about it a little) you'll be safe. Eat together??? wooow it's HARAAAAM... lol.. Kidding, ofcoz you can bro, even locals do it too. sharing taxi...mmmm... i think it's very forbidden. haahaahaha... kidding again. it's allowed my bro for you to share taxi everywhere, but in Banda Aceh, I'm not sure there is taxi, but there are some safe online transports such as Grab car, grab bike, Gojek Car, Gojek bike. and you even can order food from Grab food or gojek food. what you need to do is install the apps. ABout Sharia Laws it's only apply for Local Muslim or Acehness not for other provinces who visit and absolutely not for western tourist. I went to many places in Indonesia, I found not so much different. if you have visited Padang West Sumatra, will be a lot more easier for you because it's almost 100% same with Aceh. sorry for my broken English 😁

Because of the unique situation......non muslim might actually wants to be tried under sharia law. Just momentary pain and then they return to normal life pretty fast, unlike going through civil court which can take months and more money and eventually jail.

I have to be honest as a Westerner, the words "Sharia law" scares me a bit. I realize it does make the country safer but the brutality of the kinds of punishments are very disturbing to me. The public hangings, cutting of hands, lashing, stoning and executions, throwing gay people from buildings....are all too harsh for me. I do see the Indonesian people as very different from the Middle East even though they share the same religion. They are an Asian culture after all. Barack Obama grew up in Indonesia and he only had wonderful things to say about his Muslim Indonesian father and people he grew up with in his biographies. He described the people as very quiet and very kind people. They don't raise their voices like us Americans nor do they swear. I do think they have very strict capital punishment for drug smuggling. I remember when a few young Australian young blokes were caught trying to smuggle drugs into Bali, they were given the death penalty. The Australian government and its people pleaded for their lives making it a huge international incident that captivated the Western world all of who also got involved to plead for their lives. These boys were allowed to meet their family members for a few minutes and then taken blindfolded to a coconut tree I believe, where they were tied to and shot. Indonesia did not bend one bit. In a way they were fair about their treatment to everyone regardless of the wealth of your nation. Yet, it does seem harsh for us in the Western world for a first time offense, yet at times, I feel maybe that is what we need to happen in the US when you see all the damage drugs has done to families in this country. Yes, the Tsunami was awful. It is interesting that they did leave some areas as they were after the Tsunami. They seemed to have recovered well.

Dan the Sharia laws in Islam is not about punishment, it is a code of living for Muslims from the time they are born till death. Only small part of it is about punishment. Aceh is the only province in Indonesia that practice this laws so if you think Sharia laws is not for you, you can visit the other 37 provinces in Indonesia 😊

it's not brutal it's harsh only against criminals. The world is extremely diverse so are opinions of people around the world. You only look with the eyes of your world and think it's best. But it is not true at all. Only those who have suffered at the hands of criminals can feel the pain. these harsh punishments are for heinous crimes like murder,rape, corruption. If you have a way of doing things without violating the law why do u need to do it by violating law
